.........They say that March 'Comes in like a lion and out like a lamb' and with all the squally rain we have struggled through in February, I do hope this month will see Spring sunshine and we can finally be rid of wintertime! With daffodils, chicks and Spring lambs gambolling in the fields, March is a lovely optimistic month which fills us with hope for the happy times we can share in warmer weather. Mother's Day on Sunday 30th March is the perfect excuse to spoil Mum - take her out for a lovely lunch, buy her some flowers, or maybe treat her to a manicure or facial - whatever you choose, make sure you let your Mother feel special! What you can’t afford to go shopping without

A decade ago, most people were too proud to produce vouchers at the supermarket till, as the stigma of being short of money was more important than saving a few pence. However as we entered a recession in 2007, the internet saw the birth of a stream of discount voucher sites giving shoppers the chance to claim their reductions from the anonymity of a computer screen. And as the economic chill continued to bite, these sites have rocketed in popularity as people began realising the money-saving potential on everything, from insurance to groceries. Latest figures from one of the UK's fastest growing sites - Savoo - shows the UK's shopping habits have changed dramatically in the last three years. The research shows that there has been an increase of almost 40% in the number of people searching for great deals online since 2009. A massive 85% of women say they would use a discount code or coupon in supermarkets if it meant they could get a better deal, while clothes, shoes and restaurants are the most popular with online bargain-hunters - perhaps indicating the UK is heading towards the extreme couponing culture of the US.

10

Traditionally polite Brits are also changing their attitudes to using voucher codes, with 80 per cent of respondents not being embarrassed to make a saving on the items they buy compared with 70% years ago. The findings also show people are more open to cosmetic surgery than ever before, but don't want to save money on procedures that will enhance their looks. In these austere times just three per cent of those interviewed would opt to use a discount code or deal when it came to getting nose jobs, teeth whitening or laser eye surgery proving that when it comes to our looks, the nation is reluctant to save wants to pay top dollar. Other findings show the north/south divide strikes again, as it's the penurious people of Glasgow who make the most of discount vouchers by saving an average £526 a year on their grocery shopping, compared to those in Plymouth who only save £4.10 a week. Perhaps not surprisingly, it's the younger generation that make the most of online deals and discounts with those aged 16-24 saving an average of £8.40 on their weekly shop compared to the over 55s who save an average of £5. Simon Bird, General Manager of Savoo, says: "This research shows

how the UK is a nation of savvy shoppers using voucher codes and deals to get the best prices all the time with grocery prices, understandably being top of the agenda." The latest site to appear DiscountVoucherSite.com - is already proving immensely popular with the savvy shopper communities. Billing itself as a haven for shoppers, DiscountVoucherSite.com pledges to provide a voucher to match whatever you're shopping for on the high street with savings of up to 80%. The discounts are not limited as they are sourced daily, and allow shoppers to search for the product they've already decided to buy and enter the code at the checkout - getting their bargain price without the pain.

Health &Beauty Are cold symptoms making you feel miserable? Here are 3 cold remedies you can use right now... at home ... to feel better. Cold Remedy #1: Drink plenty of fluids to help break up your congestion. Drinking water or juice will prevent dehydration and keep your throat moist. You should drink at least 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water daily. Include fluids such as water, sports drinks, herbal teas, fruit drinks, or ginger ale. Your mother's chicken soup might help too! (Limit cola, coffee, and other drinks with caffeine because it acts like a diuretic and may dehydrate you.) Cold Remedy #2: Inhale steam to ease your congestion and drippy nose. Hold your head over a pot of boiling water and breathe through your nose. Be careful. If the steam burns your nose, breathe in more slowly. You can buy a humidifier, but the steam will be the same as the water on the stove. Moisture from a hot shower with the door closed, saline nasal spray, or a room humidifier is just as helpful to ease congestion. Cold Remedy #3: Blow your nose often, but do it the proper way. It's important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your head. But when you blow hard, pressure can carry germ-carrying phlegm back into your ear passages, causing earache. The best way to blow your nose is to press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear the other.

Making the most of your Georgian home The Georgain listed home maybe the most lusted after but if you are lucky enough to own one already, what can you do to show off it’s features? Built between 1714 and 1820 the Georgian period home is the most lusted after in Britain. Perhaps its our love for all things Austen which make us yearn for the kind of house in which we could imagine Mr Darcy moodily lurking or maybe we just love the clean lines, high ceilings and symmetrical proportions which make Georgian architecture lighter and more typically attractive. Whatever the reason, according to estate agents Savills Brits will typically pay a whopping 43% premium for a Georgian home over any other - even the thatched chocolate box country cottage. So if you're one of the lucky owners of an Austen-era property what do you need to know to make the most of its enviable looks? Beware Brass Furniture Many retailers will sell brass knobs, hinges and knockers as 'Georgian' or even advise you that shining brass door furniture was typical of the era. However, more often than not Georgian homes would have been fitted with black painted cast iron door furniture. Equally letterboxes were a Victorian invention (although practicality may override authenticity on this one!) while most doors would have been fitted with one large, rounded central knob rather than a handle. To find authentic door furniture visit a reclamation yard or take advice from a restoration specialist.

Retain Original Features Important in any period home are the features such as fireplaces, windows, staircases and floorboards which help in dating a home and, more importantly, give it character. In recent years 'period features' have become as desirable a selling point as extra space, gardens and garages. As with original plasterwork other features should be kept in as original a state as possible and repaired only by qualified and experienced professionals. If you should need to replace or reinstate items try reclamation yards or online auction houses before installing reproduction items - these can look unconvincing and, as an example, Georgian floorboards can be extremely hard to replicate due to their unusual proportions. Let Your Personality Shine Through Provided your home isn't a listing building you can, within building regulations do whatever you like with it. It can be tempting with any historic building to slavishly restore and decorate, paying minute attention to specific historical detail. As Le Corbusier said 'a house is a machine for living in' - so remember to use your own taste and needs to make the most of your Georgian home.

The Garden in March Time to put the wellies away

“The longer, warmer days are just around the corner, but are you ready to spring into action in your garden?” asks Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. No doubt we are all pretty fed up with the relentless winds and persistent rain over the past few months. One customer asked about the practical possibilities of growing rice in his newly acquired garden the other day! The answer, sadly is, no! Rice needs a minimum temperature of 10C together with ample tropical sunlight; hence we cannot grow it in the UK as TV farmer Adam Henson discovered in a recent BBC programme of Nigel and Adam’s Kitchen Farm. Wet, soggy and miserable is how many of our gardens have been looking, however the magical transformation is now well underway when we can start to dream of sunshine, warmth and nature

springing back into action. We’ve seen snowdrops flowering 2-3 weeks earlier than Cypripedium kentuckiense Orchid normal, Daffodils defying nature and in flower by mid February, so it’s not been all bad news. What can we get on with now to make a difference in the next few months time? Top of the list must be to plan your summer displays including the likes of Lilies, Gladiolus and Dahlias. You can also consider the types of seeds to sow now, especially hardy annual flowers such as Calendula (Pot Marigold), Helianthus (Sunflowers), Nasturtium and Papaver Gladiolus (Poppies) as well as salad crop vegetables, which can be directly sown into the soil. if its still chilly, lay some landscape fabric, plastic sheeting or cloches to try and raise the temperature by a few degrees prior to seed sowing. Spruce up your flower beds and borders with a general tidy up and remove leaves and other debris from lawns, around and in ponds, under hedge lines and in between your containers. If your soil has dried out sufficiently you can apply a 5cm layer mulch of organic matter such as well-rotted manure, compost or recycled green waste onto an empty garden border, or around shrubs in an established one. Likewise, trim back (if not already done so) the old woody stems of perennials to soil level. Cut-back butterfly bushes to 12-18inches (30-45cm) above soil level to help

encourage those long flowering stems to develop over the next few months. The colourful winter stems of Salix (Willow) and Cornus (Dogwood) also need to be trimmed back close to soil level to help encourage the production of new growth this spring and summer. Do this and you will have much better coloured stems next winter. The next area to tackle is the greenhouse, which before long will be bursting with trays containing seedlings and cuttings. So, it’s important to sweep out any plant debris on the floor and benches and disinfect with a solution of Jeyes Fluid (or similar). The cleaning process needs to include the glass – not only for increasing light levels but also for killing overwintering pests and diseases which lodge in the smallest of nooks and crannies.

Whilst you’re there, wash pots and seed trays to help prevent diseases such as ‘damping off’ infecting your young plants. Ventilate your greenhouse well over the next couple of days so it dries thoroughly. A call to action comes if you are planning to sow the seeds of faster maturing plants such as Marigolds, Tomatoes and Beans. You need to get these started sooner rather than later. If you need to make an early start on seasonal plants, check out our range of young plug plants at the Garden Centre. Composts have been in the news recently after Which? revealed many of the peat-free brands failed to perform well against peat and low peat composts tested. It is a rather complex and highly charged issue, however the top compost as far as Which? research reported is the J. Arthur Bower’s Traditional Potting Compost. So, whatever your preferences, always pay for good quality seed and potting compost – it’s money well spent! Time spent hunting down and eradicating hibernating pests now before spring and summer arrive can save a lot of trouble. Take a close look

Vincent Landscapes of Buckingham

at the crowns of your perennial plants as you may find slugs, snails and aphid colonies sheltering for the winter, especially as this winter has been so mild. If you still haven’t cleared last year’s pots of summer bedding then do this now and be on the look-out for the white vine weevil larvae, which live in the compost and feed on plant roots. Destroy any you find and be prepared to treat for vine weevils this year, using parasitic nematodes or chemical drenches such as Provado Vine Weevil Killer 2. Please follow the instructions carefully when using garden chemicals. This next suggestion might sound odd but if you haven’t got one of them set up, now is the best time to install a water butt or two to collect seasonal rainfall. Not only does this help the environment but rain water is good for watering ericaceous plants such as Camellias, Rhododendrons and Blueberries. This is essential as our tap water is often slightly alkaline. When installing a water butt make sure it’s positioned below a downpipe to make the most of the rainfall.

The wet winter has certainly made the process of moving plants around the garden awkward, so this really is the last opportunity to transplant any of your deciduous shrubs. So, if you have a badly placed deciduous shrub then now is the time to move it whilst it is dormant. Choose a still day to prevent the roots drying out. Take a wide berth around the shrub when digging it up and try to take as much of the root ball as possible for the quickest establishment in its new location. When planting shrubs in their new position, place them at the same level they were previously in the soil, and remember to water them in well afterwards. Oh, and don’t forget to add some planting compost, Rootgrow and bone meal into the planting hole. Finally, if you haven’t already, then try setting up a compost area in your garden.
