The Relay will begin on 19th May and end in the new Olympic Stadium in London on 27th July for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony. Fake that Tan If you aren’t off to sunnier climes this year but still want that sunkissed look, why not consider faking it?! A fake tan does not have to mean you’ll turn a nasty looking shade of orange. If used correctly, sunless tanning products can give you a natural looking tan. If you are applying the product yourself, here are some hints to give you the best results.

?

Hands last! When you have applied self-tan to your face and body, wash your hands carefully so you don’t get tanned palms. Then apply the tan to the top of your hands with cotton wool. Dry out! Don’t get dressed until the tanning product has dried completely. If you’re not fully confident, visit one of our local salons for a professional spray tan.

Jen Oakton

Exfoliate! Get rid of excess dead skin cells by exfoliating thoroughly first. Shave your legs too. Go gently! Use the product lightly and evenly over your body. Have a very light touch on dry skin and on thicker areas of skin such as elbows, knees and ankles. Get help! Ask someone to help you apply fake tan to the difficult to reach spots.

Hosepipe Ban in Force Since April 5th, domestic customers of Anglian Water have had a hosepipe ban in place. This measure was taken in response to the serious drought situation across the region. As a hosepipe can use up to 1000 litres of water in just an hour (more than the average household uses in a whole day!), the hosepipe ban should save millions of litres of water. Some people are confused as to exactly what is and isn’t allowed during the hosepipe ban. Here’s a quick guide: During the hosepipe ban, you MUST NOT use a hosepipe to: Water your garden – flowers, hanging baskets, lawn, park, or allotment UNLESS you are a Blue Badge holder. Fill paddling pools or domestic swimming pools.

Page 11

Mess around with water e.g. water fights or spraying the kids! Clean your windows, walls, paths or patios. A registered business is allowed to do so however. Wash your private car or boat. Fill or maintain an ornamental pond or fountain UNLESS these contain fish or other aquatic animals. Customers who ignore the hosepipe ban could be fined up to £1000. If you’re not sure if the hosepipe ban applies to you, tap your postcode into the checker at Anglian Water’s website. You can also find advice regarding exemptions and a range of special deals on there to help you save water and cope with the hosepipe ban. If you are a keen gardener and a customer of Anglian Water, you can apply for a free ‘garden water saving’ kit. It contains water storing crystals and mats as well as useful RHS information on saving water in the garden and choosing drought tolerant plants. Visit www.anglianwater.co.uk to find out more and to apply for your free kit.

Let Coeliacs Eat Cake! Coeliac Awareness Week is 14th – 20th May. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition where the gluten found in wheat, barley and rye causes damage to the gut that can only be prevented by lifelong avoidance of gluten. That rules out all normal bread, pasta, biscuits and cakes. Luckily, most supermarkets now have a good range of “Free From” products. However, they are often significantly more expensive than their gluten containing equivalents, and to be honest, not always that convincing! The biggest challenge for most coeliacs is eating out. Knowing how difficult it can sometimes be to find really decent gluten free food, whenever I find a great new product or new place to eat out, the first thing I want to do is spread the word. With this in mind, I set up the Facebook group

Page 14

“Gluten Free Brackley” to swap tips on eating out locally. A group of us get together regularly at the Courtyard Coffee Shop, where there is always a good gluten free selection of sandwiches, jacket potatoes, salads and most importantly: cake! Overall, most places can usually adapt something on the menu to be suitable and it is always helpful to ring in advance to see what they can do. Restaurants: remember that by providing clearly labelled gluten free options and training your staff in awareness you will be gaining not only our custom, but those dining with us as well! For further information: www.coeliac.org.uk – Coeliac UK is a vital source of support and information for the newly diagnosed and to keep up to date with new products and changes to product labelling. Their safe foods directory which is updated every year is our bible!

The Garden in May

Written by Chris Day Buckingham Nurseries & Garden Centre 01280 822133

Time for a floral rain dance! The great news for gardeners is you don’t need a hosepipe to be able to garden this summer, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. The hosepipe ban, affecting more than 20 million households, is the strictest ever imposed. Two incredibly dry winters has left the Water Companies no options, especially in our neck of the woods. So, for us gardeners, it’s simply how we water the garden wisely this summer. Remember you can still use watering cans (so make sure you have plenty!), however if you have a water butt then this can be fitted to a seep hose system. You can even buy a water pump for your water butt to help distribute water around the garden

to where it is needed. Micro-irrigation systems with a water pressure reducing connector are permitted under the current ban and these neat set-ups are designed for greenhouses or where you have large numbers of containers to irrigate. You can even use these Micro-irrigation systems with automatic timers so you are applying water even more efficiently, perhaps through the night so avoiding unnecessary evaporation. You need to be planting clever this summer... working in one of the water –retaining gel products, sometimes called water storing gels, would be useful on all your plantings, including those composts used for hanging

baskets and patio planters. These clever polymers absorb up to 300 times their weight in water so helping the soil remain moist and allowing the roots to Echinops actively move around the soil where they are added. You still have to add fertiliser, such as Blood, Fish & Bone or perhaps work in one of the slow-release fertilisers like Osmocote, which operate over a much longer period of time and are controlled by soil temperature and soil moisture. No doubt you will have read newspaper news stories suggesting we plant our gardens with drought-tolerant plants; however I must voice a word of warning here as many of these plants are simply not frost hardy. So, whilst they may survive the summer on a cup of water, you’ll be heartily disappointed when they fail to come through the winter. So, what plants can we establish? Well, here’s a few for starters... Choisya ternate (Mexican orange bush), Dianthus, Euphorbia, Bearded Iris, Echinacea, Echinops, English Lavender (including

Page 17

Stipa & Lavender planted together the popular Lavandula ‘Hidcote’, pictured, with Stipa grass), Helianthemums, Kniphofia (red hot poker), Nepeta x faassenii, ornamental grasses (Carex, Pennisetum and Stipa), Verbascum and Yucca. Finally, there is a group of flowers that positively thrive in dry conditions and in poor soils, which I urge you to sow this month, despite the hose pipe ban. And what are these magical flowers? Well, simply wildflowers. A packet or two of mixed seeds sprinkled over the soil will germinate in the most difficult of conditions and are great magnets to wildlife, especially bees and butterflies. We’ll be shortly sowing wildflowers at the Garden Centre, so watch this space to see how they fare! cont page 18

Here are 10 tips to help beat the drought... 1. Grow drought-tolerant plants that don’t need as much help to survive (as listed in the feature). 2. Place saucers under containers so water doesn’t run away which will help reduce the time spent watering. 3. Limit use of hanging baskets and utilise water-storing crystals to reduce the amount of watering needed. 4. When watering it is better to provide a good soaking rather than watering little and often, as this allows the water to seep deep into the soil and encourages plants to grow deeper roots. 5. Avoid watering lawns – they soon green up after rain. 6. Fruit and vegetables usually crop adequately without watering. The quality and quantity however, is improved by watering close to harvest. However, when the leaves are the crop, such as lettuce, the plants should never go short of water. Watering about two weeks before harvesting is usually sufficient. 7. Mulch in late winter or at actual planting to ‘lock in’ soil moisture and prevent weeds growing. 8. Recycle water from the kitchen and bathroom. Plants can be watered with bath, shower and kitchen water, which is collectively referred to as ‘grey’ water. Soil and potting compost are effective at filtering out contaminants, including soaps and detergents, so there’s no need to worry about using it on your plants. However it is good hygiene practice not to use bath and shower water on edible crops. 9. Remove weeds – they use water that your other plants can soak up. 10. Introduce windbreaks and provide light shade to help reduce water loss on exposed sites. TOP TIP When using a watering can, direct water at only those plants that are most susceptible to dry conditions. If your garden is on a slope, build up a shallow basin of soil around the plants to help enable the water (and rain when it arrives) to seep into the soil and not simply just run off the surface. 18

The cost of a stamp seems ridiculously high all of a sudden. There are some things that just can’t be sent in any other way but there is a great alternative to sending a greetings card by Royal Mail. An e-card is similar to a postcard or a greeting card but it’s digitally created and sent over the Internet, usually by e-mail or via text message. Choosing a digital card gives the sender many more options than a traditional greetings card. You can personalise the image by adding text, a photo or video or send a card containing an animation or interactive game. The recipient usually receives an email to let them know a card has been sent and the card can then be viewed over the Internet and saved to the recipient’s own computer. Not only does this save you the price of the stamp but it’s an environmentally friendly option too. There are plenty of online e-card stores. Many offer free e-cards – try www.hallmark.co.uk/ecards or www.disney.co.uk/disney-create/ecards/ while others charge an annual subscription – try www.jacquielawson.com
