Have printed books had their day? Recently I sold off some of the books outgrown by my children. Some were true modern classics and I hesitated for a moment, wondering if I should box them up to give to my future grandchildren! It occurred to me then that printed books might not be so relevant to the next generation. It may be that children’s books will only be read on digital devices like the iPad or Kindle (albeit, much whizzier versions!)? Maybe, those children won’t have to read at all… could information be downloaded (or is it uploaded?) to their brains by some new fangled gadget?! It might seem a ridiculous idea but perhaps it’s possible - vinyl was replaced by music CDs but the rise of the mp3 player has made those almost obsolete! Vinyl is now quite simply a collectors’ item – is this the future of the printed book? As more readers have turned from printed to digital books, the physical book trade has declined dramatically. Amazon states that sales of e-books have overtaken their sales of printed books. It seems significant that the website’s best selling product in 2013 was its Kindle.
10
Of course, there are some fantastic benefits to digital books. An e-reader can hold thousands of books in its memory. Most houses would struggle to do the same. An e-reader gives access to a large number of free books. But then so does a library. An e-reader is supremely portable. But then so are many books (and their batteries won’t run out!). The newly opened avenues for digital self publishing has made many an aspiring writer’s dream come true and there are some real gems – three out of the top
ten authors on Amazon’s e-book sales chart last year were self publishers. Could printed books disappear entirely? Somehow it seems unlikely. There is something about a book that the e-readers and tablets just haven’t been able to match. Perhaps the texture? The smell? I’m not sure. But I am sure that the fate of printed books is in the hands of the consumer. If you stop buying books from our local bookshop and stop visiting the local library, the result doesn’t take much effort to predict. Does that matter? That’s for you to decide! Written by Jen Oakton

Holiday Ideas
Have you booked your holiday yet? After a few grey and cold months, many people now make plans for some summer sun or other getaway. We asked some of the Buckingham in Business readers what their holiday plans are for 2013. Perhaps our findings may inspire you! Heading off to Europe for some warmer weather is always a popular choice, with Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey being favourite destinations. If you are in need of a change, consider Italy, Bulgaria, Croatia or Egypt. Camping is becoming more and more popular every year. There are some wonderful sites around the UK and especially in France, just a short hop over the Channel, where camping is loved and the campsites typically have a wider range of facilities than UK sites. There’s lots of great advice on camping and
caravanning on www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk. Buckingham in Business readers love camping for the flexibility it offers, the ability to live more simply for a short period and the sense of adventure that a camping holiday brings. Several people recommended going camping with friends. A number of readers planned to send their children on a Summer Camp this year. PGL offers children’s adventure activity holidays for children aged 7 – 17 years. Activities include abseiling, surfing, pony trekking, dancing, cooking, bushcraft, and film making! See www.pgl.co.uk for more details. If you’re not ready for your child to go alone, PGL also offer family adventure breaks!
If you’re the person who is fed up with the same old holiday every year, make 2013 the year you do something completely different! Why not try a cycling tour, a riding holiday, a camper van trip, or a painting holiday? If lying on a beach doesn’t appeal, then there are a huge number of special interest holidays on offer. Our local travel agents are a good starting point, as are specialist travel websites.

The Garden in May A dedicated follower of fashion As The Great Allotment Challenge hits our screens and the BBC Two celebrates 50 years of nostalgia, being home to Gardeners’ World of course, it’s perhaps a good time to look at what’s fashionable in the garden this season, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. I think it was John Betjeman, who described the Victorian’s “ghastly good taste” when describing clashing bedding plants, multi-coloured leaves and fancy ferns. However, the Edwardian "gardens of a golden afternoon" veered towards softly graded borders of Delphiniums, Hydrangeas and Hollyhocks. In the Seventies, the country got carpeted in heathers and dwarf conifers (well, actually Leylandii as well). Today, the trend is for impact colour, evergreens, low maintenance, grasses,
vegetables, trained fruit and prairie perennials, such as the wonderful garden, Foggy Bottom at Bressingham Gardens (pictured below). In gardening new plants and concepts of growing them takes a while to filter through and become accepted. Commercial growers trial perhaps the latest Hebe, Fuchsia or Dahlia, often across many countries, before we get a chance to plant them in our own plots. The process of getting a new plant into production can take many years, because all new plants undergo extensive trialing to make sure it remains true to type, stable in growing, attains the height and generally behaves itself! New plants then take centre stage at trade shows and once garden centres take them on board they come under the scrutiny of you, the public. Many plants also become ‘stars’ at the big flower shows, and this month’s RHS

Chelsea Flower Show will see many new plants being Monty Don officially launched in front of the media and the 160,000 visitors to the six day event. No doubt Monty Don and Carol Klein will give them plenty of mentions over the BBC’s coverage. During July at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, famous for its amazing rose marquee, new rose varieties are given an official “christening ceremony’ with celebrities and fund raising charities promoting the virtues of the latest English rose, Floribunda or Patio rose together with the story behind its development. However, that’s for plants of the future, gardening is all about the here and now. What’s exciting in 2014 is we are seeing plenty of innovation coming into the market place. Grafted vegetable plants such as Aubergines, Cucumbers, Peppers and Tomatoes have impacted on how we grow these favourites and this year, you’ll even come across
popular favourite varieties given the magic grafting touch. Still on vegetables, as we continue to pursue the Good Life, veggie growers are increasing the range of many of the crops to help extend the range and encourage us to give new things a try. How about different forms of Baby Leaf Salad, the new and well named Cucumber Snack Box ‘Cucino’ F1 hybrid or even growing a few Gherkins! Growers are also aware we don’t want masses of young plug plants to set at a time, so look out for packs of 6 plants with the option of Cucumber Snack Box picking and mixing them so you get good mixture of different crops maturing at different time to help ensure continuity. These are often offered on a multi-buy, so saving you a few pennies in the process. Environmentally our plant buying habits are shifting too.

You’ll see more native wildflowers available in small 9cm pots and these are perfect to help encourage bees, butterflies and other beneficial insect life into the garden. There are some beauties such as Cornflowers, Honesty (pictured above), Ox-Eye Daisy, Herb Robert and Meadow Cranesbills. Remember it’s the diversity of planting which yields the best range of visitors, so add as much variety as you can. Remember too, if you are on a budget many of these can be easily raised from seed sown through the late spring. Planting opportunities in the garden can also be addressed. The current trend to mixed borders is being driven by the smaller garden, so getting the right plants for the location is paramount. Where possible, always turn a so-called ‘problem’ location into a planting opportunity. So, if you have a shady border, think of it as a woodland location and plant with a range of plants suited to those specific conditions. Good contenders would include ferns, Wild Garlic, Iris foetidissima Honesty Seed Pods
(the so-called Stinking Iris stinking iris, pictured above), Tellima grandiflora, English Bluebells, Hostas and even Wild Strawberries will positively thrive and give you much interest through the year. However, shade can be wet or dry so be sure to check the requirements before you plant. Dry soils can be bulked up with organic materials such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or using one of the soil wetting agents such as Broadleaf P4 and adding a small amount to the planting hole to help keep the roots moistened to aid the new plant’s successful establishment. Nostalgia does appear to be a theme of our gardens of late with many of the old fashioned perennials such as Lupins receiving a 21st century breeding makeover. Although towering stems can look spectacular, especially in wide dramatic borders, the downside is the maintenance can be labour-intensive so many growers are now developing popular varieties which are much more compact in stature, perfect for the narrow border

or even growing in large pots. Look out for the West Country Lupins which repeat flower and keep to around 60-90cm (24-36in) and they available in stunning colours. Good ones to look out for Lupinus Manhattan Lights include ‘Gladiator’ (vibrant orangeand yellow bicolour), ‘Manhattan Lights’ (bicolour of purple bells and yellow, pictured above) and Towering Inferno (flaming rich orange red bells, yellow flecked). Selecting plants is always a journey of discovery, you often come across plants by default and that’s what creating a gardening and learning is essentially all about. Remember all plants have potentially the word ‘new’ attached on them, that’s if you haven’t come across them before!
