Welcome...
May ISSUE 2015
........There’s an awful lot to like about May…..lovely warm evenings, the garden’s looking wonderful, and two Bank Holidays, for good measure! So, what will you do with your long weekends off work? I’m planning a spot of gardening, relaxing with friends and maybe a lovely pub lunch – with so much on offer in our beautiful part of the world, we’re spoilt for choice! For teenagers about to leave school, May heralds the bulk of their all-important exams, so many households are buzzing with nerves, with frantic revising and well-bitten nails all too common. If this sounds familiar, remember to also make time to de-stress and have fun, and the very best of luck to all of you. Until next time………

PREPARE TO BARE
Prepare to bare – if you dare!! Warmer weather means only one thing, to guys and gals alike – getting those legs out! After months encased in jeans, boots, thick socks and tights, it’s time to unleash your legs and feet from their protective layers and let them enjoy the sunshine. For feet, it’s all about smoothing tired, roughened areas and softening the skin, to make them look and feel wonderful in sandals or barefoot on the beach. A pumice stone and the simplest moisturiser will work wonders, and won’t cost the earth.
For legs, adding a touch of colour makes so much difference – but before you tan, exfoliate! A basic body scrub or exfoliation mitt will take dead skin cells away, ensuring your bronzed glow covers more evenly and lasts longer. Once your long-hidden limbs are exposed to the elements, don’t forget the suncream – these areas will need extra protection, so go up an SPF for a week or so, to let them acclimatise. Enjoy the sunshine!

With the school summer holidays just a couple of months away now, many families’ thoughts are turning to booking a week away with the kids. Whilst we all like to save up throughout the year and have a memorable week of sun, sea and icecream, it’s not always possible in this world of bills and budgeting, so what are the cost saving options? If you fancy warmer climes, there are always last-minute deals available online. If you dare to leave it until a few days before you fly, or are flexible and can go at a moment’s notice, this may be the best option for you. For those of us who have to book ahead and juggle time off work, holidaying in the UK may well be the best option. Travelling time is reduced, you can opt to drive or take the bus or train to your destination, and there’s no luggage limit.

g a holiday
Take a look at my website..
Camping and caravanning is very popular, there are fabulous camp sites all around the coast and inland, so you can enjoy the beauty of the British Isles. With pitches from just a few pounds per night, this leaves plenty of budget for treats and excursions. Camping equipment can be bought very cheaply from online selling sites, or why not share with friends who are holidaying a different week? If you’re wanting to stay in a large group, with family and friends, why not look at hiring a large cottage? Sleeping 20 or more and with all the mod cons, maybe even tennis courts or a pool, this option can work out cheaper than a basic B&B per person, per night. Whatever you choose, fingers crossed that the weather will be kind – and don’t forget the suncream!

The Garden in May Pack a punch with hanging baskets ˚ Hanging baskets are a great way to add a splash of colour to the outside of your house. They look beautiful, smell lovely and can be planted up with just about anything, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. It was back in the 1980s when the UK realised the potential of hanging baskets. Before then gardeners considered them as an expensive luxury. However, something quite magical happened - we fell in love with our patio or terrace areas, and realised these balls of colour would create the floral effect we were looking for. However, it was also the way we purchased our plants that really fuelled the popularity of the hanging baskets. You could buy plants as small plugs which made the process of adding plants much more straightforward.

The companies manufacturing the baskets designed them for easier planting and the technology used by the compost and fertiliser companies developed products that ensured great results. Today you can buy ready formulated plant mixes in colour themed hues and even clever mesh container planters that will literally drop-in to your existing basket or patio pot. The great news is we still love our hanging baskets and always aim to grow the best! So, if you are planning to establish one this month here’s a few tips to help you along.
Choose your plants
The first thing you need to do to create a beautiful hanging basket is to choose the plants and these will depend on if the basket will be in the sun or the shade. Whatever plants you decide to use, it’s really important to make sure they’re healthy. Select bushy plants with several stems as they’ll grow better. There are three elements to a basket – a centre plant (or plants), trailing plants for the sides and

filler colour plants to go in between. Centre plants give height and impact. There’s plenty to choose from including Fuchsias, Pelargoniums (Zonal Geraniums and Regal), Cordylines, Cupressus ‘Goldcrest’ and dramatic foliage Coleus. There’s a massive choice when it comes to trailing plants – the usual suspects Surfinia Petunias, cascading Lobelias, trailing Fuchsias, pendulous Begonias and newbies such as Bacopa. You can’t beat foliage favourites such as Ipomoea ‘Black Tone’ (pictured, green forms are also available), variegated Nepeta, Hedera, Helichrysum (silver and gold forms) Nasturtium ‘Alaska’ (variegated foliage with bright jewel-like flowers) and silver-leaved Cineraria. The filler plants can include scented Alyssum, French Marigolds, Busy Lizzies (look out for the new blight resistant types),
Begonia ‘Million Kisses’ and Verbena.
Basket options
There are three main types of basket you can choose from. Each one has its own benefits, but the choice really comes down to what you like. Traditional wire-mesh baskets These allow for planting in both the sides and top of the hanging basket. Line with sphagnum moss or a faux moss-look liner or a composite liner. Don’t skimp with your planting if you go for this option. Rattan baskets Definitely the “in thing” at the moment – not only do they look great they also have a plastic liner for water retention. Plastic baskets These insulate against the wind and sun, so are better at holding on to water. However, unless they have side planting pockets, they can’t have the sides planted so you have to plant plenty of trailing plants around the edge, often at the expense of centre and mixer plants.

Look out for the J A Bower’s Masterblend Compost, which contains 100% Professional Grade Scottish peat, a six month slow release feed and a wetting agent, a perfect combination for producing great baskets.
What you need to buy Ultimately the number of plants you’ll need depends on their size and type, but for a standard 12in (35cm) mesh basket you will need about: • 1 to 3 centre plants • 5 plants for colour • 7 to 9 trailing plants For a plastic or rattan basket 12in (35cm) with solid sides you will need fewer plants. Allow for about: • 1 to 3 centre plants • 3 plants for colour • 6 trailing plant Whichever basket you choose you’ll also need to buy: • Some hanging basket compost or peat-free multi-purpose compost (allow about 15litres for a 14in (40cm) basket. • A composite basket liner or sphagnum moss or false moss if you using a wire-mesh basket. • Osmocote slow-release fertiliser granules (only needed if using multi-purpose compost). • Water-retaining gel (only required if using multi-purpose compost)
Get planting – the fun bit! First of all, put your wire-mesh basket on a bucket or large plant pot for stability (it’ll help when planting). Then use your chosen lining material to line your basket. To help even more with water retention, put a saucer (or piece of plastic) at the bottom of the basket to act as a mini reservoir. Now mix some compost with a handful of controlledrelease fertiliser granules and some water-retaining gel or simply use J A Bower’s Masterblend Compost. Add it to the basket and pat it down until it’s about 2in (5cm) below the top. If you’ve used moss to line the basket push some compost up at the edges and pull some moss over the top of it – this will give the plants a soft edge to trail over.

If you’re using a wire-mesh basket, start from the bottom and work your way up the sides. Plant one set of trailing plants just above the saucer (or piece of plastic), and another set about 2in (5cm) below the top of the basket. To make life a bit easier, wrap the rootballs of the plants in small plastic bags or newspaper to push them through the mesh, but don’t forget to remove these before you cover the roots with soil. As soon as you’ve positioned all the side plants, add more compost to within 2in (5cm) of the basket rim. Now add in the centre plants and plants for colour to the top. Before you remove them from their containers, give them a good drink of water. Firm the soil around the base of each plant and sprinkle another tablespoon of controlled-release fertiliser granules over the soil. Care tips Hanging baskets are really easy to look after – but are susceptible to late frosts. When the basket is completed and if it is a hot dry day, water the basket straight away (one or twice a day) and hang it in the shade for a while. There are some innovative watering devices available, such as the Hozelock Flexispray, to ensure your baskets get a good soak rather than the gardener applying the water! If the basket does dry out, add a single drop of washing-up liquid to your watering can. The wetting agent properties of the washing-up liquid will help the compost re-soak and allow the re-absorption of water. As for feeding, even if you’ve used a controlledrelease fertiliser with your compost, your plants will benefit from extra feeding – especially during the growing season in summer and autumn. So use one of the tomato feeds or Phostrogen or a liquid fertiliser and follow the on-pack instructions. Finally, regularly deadhead the flowers in your basket – not only does it keep the display tidy it also helps encourage further flushes of blooms which will be the envy of your neighbours! 26
