Parking is always a problem Parking is always a problem, and whereas there’s usually a side street where the car can be left all day, it’s also less likely to be well lit in these dark mornings and evenings, and more at risk from passing thieves. A few simple checks will make your car less attractive to opportunistic ne’er-do-wells and may save heartache through the winter months!
•
•
•
Always lock your car – and for older cars or 4x4s, make sure all the doors are locked! Shut windows tightly, too – any little gap can mean they can break in more easily.
•
Never leave valuables or shopping on display – lock them in the glovebox or boot, or put them under the seat, out of sight.
Don’t leave the car unattended if you need to warm it up in the morning – a car with the engine running is too much temptation for those who are looking to ‘borrow’ one! Fit a security device to help ensure your car’s still there when you return – immobilisers, alarms, pedal and steering wheel locks are all helpful in slowing thieves down, and fitting a tracker may help recover the vehicle, should they bypass all other measures. Insurance premiums can be cheaper if these gadgets are installed, so they can save worry and pennies at the same time!

Declutter online!! With Christmas nearly upon us, the urge is to tidy up, make space for everything on your wish list and create a cosy, homely environment to enjoy over winter. Decluttering has never been easier, with the help of the internet. However you get online – laptop, desktop, tablet or phone – you can sell, swap or give away unwanted items and have them collected in minutes –
cheaper and much more rewarding than trekking to the tip!! Sites such as Freecycle have Wanted and Offered pages, there are social networking pages to sell, swap or give away items in your local area, and many charities can be emailed to request a collection of furniture or other large items so that others can benefit. Just tap the details into your choice of search engine – and get rid of the things you don’t need, to declutter for Christmas and help others in your area, at the click of a mouse!

Online education – get a qualification from the comfort of your sofa!! With another year’s university students now happily settled in halls, with their relaxed attitude to laundry and reliance on fast food and fancy dress, had you thought about studying for a degree of your own, one that you can fit around work and children, using your own computer? There are many reputable online companies with whom you can enrol to study courses at any level and in any subject, and many of these will enhance your career prospects as well as nourishing your mind. Using just your laptop or PC at home and course materials you can download, you could use those dark winter evenings to good effect, and be qualified as quickly as you choose. With distance learning courses, you are assigned a tutor who will discuss the course with you, mark your assignments and help with any concerns or queries you may have. All you need is access to the internet, a basic word processing program on your laptop or computer and an email address to communicate with your tutor. Courses range in price and you can choose a subject to interest you, at a level you feel comfortable with. Choosing a course related to your work which achieves a recognised qualification may attract a subsidy from your employer and looks great on your CV. So what have you got to lose? Simply search for your chosen subject online, and start learning the easy way today!

It’s nearing the time to start decking the halls, stirring up the pudding and writing those thousands of cards for friends and family across the globe, so if you’re like me, and watching the pennies, here are some handy tips to make sure the festive season is splendid whilst saving: • Kids love to make cards, tree decorations and gift tags, and they are so much nicer and more memorable than commercially made ones! Many discount stores sell card and paints, sequins and tinsel very cheaply, and the end result will be fabulous and delight the recipient! • If you’ve parcels to send to family around the UK, courier companies can be cheaper than the usual trip to the Post Office, and have convenient locations in corner shops and petrol stations, so you can wrap and send gifts in the evenings and at weekends, too! Look online for the latest deals and to print your postage labels; what could be simpler! • Christmas cake? Make your own using luxury ingredients, but source them from discount supermarkets – much nicer than a bought cake, and if you make it now, there’ll be

as is coming !! time to ‘feed’ it whatever tipple you choose! Get the kids to make a snow scene with royal icing, they’ll enjoy themselves and the end result will be fabulous and taste superb! • Secret Santa is an amazing way of giving and receiving gifts in the workplace or amongst families. You can set a budget and write your name and what sort of gift you’d love on a piece of paper, then each picks a name out of the hat, everyone gets a present and only has to buy for one person – saving lots of money and wondering what people would like! • Christmas dinner is best shared amongst friends and family, so each can bring a dish and enjoy the special day together. Poultry, meat and vegetables can be sourced locally, taste fantastic and save food miles and money – farm shops quite often sell fresh turkeys at a special rate in November, so if you have room in the freezer, buy ahead of time and save! You can pick up special offers on other festive favourites in advance and store or freeze them, too – saving money and shopping time in December when it’s crowded.

The Garden in November Under s t ar t er ’ s or der s! For many of us the season may appear to be winding down, however, for our plants it’s just the start of the growing journey, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. The benefits of establishing new plants in the late autumn and early winter are twofold; - the soil is relatively warm, helped this year by the record breaking temperatures we enjoyed back in September, and there is sufficient moisture to help stimulate root development. However with the dry weather we have had recently it will be necessary to give the ground a good soaking unless we get some rain. Our rollercoaster weather patterns of this year really highlights the importance that we gardeners should “work with the weather”. In theory, of course, this can be tricky, but not impossible. However, when it comes to establishing bare-root plants, which are in their natural state of dormancy, it makes perfect sense. If you have bought a new house or moved into a new home in recent months the chances are
you’ve been busy getting the interior to your liking and the garden may well have taken a temporary back seat. In developing a new garden it’s all about establishing the long term plants first, so the priorities to planting should always be placed in the following order... plant first ornamental and fruit trees, hedges, shrubs, climbers. Timing wise, this is great news as trees and hedging plants are always best value when they are offered bare-root or ball-rooted rather than in containers. The fun bit of course comes when deciding what to grow. You will need to do a bit of homework to create your wish-list of plants – go with what you know, chat to friends, your neighbours and your local garden centre! A few good gardening books or some time spent

trawling through a source engine may create more questions than answers, so if you are unsure, do seek some advice. In gardening there’s a fair amount of terminology to understand, cut through this and you are half way there. You need to consider carefully the dimensions – in all directions - your plants will inevitably grow to. Check your soil type and if in doubt do a simple soil test to clarify what the soil pH is. In the MK18 area we tend to be neutral to alkaline (lime), so if you want to grow acid loving plants such as Pieris, Camellias, Skimmias etc, grow them in pots containing a lime-free ericaceous compost. Nurseries produce excellent information labels these days which tends to make the process of selecting garden trees (pictured, crab apple ‘Jelly King’) providing details such as height after 10 years together with the shape the tree, which ultimately makes the process of selecting straightward and fun. As far as hedging, you need to ask yourself the following questions... Do I want something evergreen? Does the hedge need to be native? Do I want a hedge to encourage wildlife? Do I want a screen to keep out unwanted visitors and to provide security?

Do I want a formal or a more naturalistic hedge? Is the hedge going to be compact and easy to care for? Armed with these and no doubt many more questions, you’ll have plenty of options to consider. Ask for a copy of our latest catalogue or visit our website where loads of information on hedges can be found. If your garden is compact and bijou then perhaps consider clothing fences with some decorative trellis and/or tensioned wires to allow you to successfully grow a rich assortment of climbers to provide your garden with a colourful and ever interesting backdrop. There are lots of options – evergreen climbers such as Honeysuckles (two good ones to look out for are Lonicera ‘Hall’s Prolific’ and ‘Henryi’), the incredibly fragrant Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) and resilient Ivies will produce a natural year-round foil. If you want some fast growers of the deciduous kind then early spring flowering Montana Clematis, both the summer and winter Jasmines and the magical festoon blooms of Wisteria will not disappoint. If you wish to bring colour to your outdoor seated area, why not invest in some pots and grow a
24
Page 24
range of interesting shrubs, including some of the colourful winter hardy shrubs such as Skimmia and for summer colour patio clematis (pictured). If you have a shady spot, opt for the colourful Japanese Maples (Acers) and grow
them in a decent sized pot, say 18in (45cm) in diameter filled with ericaceous compost and enjoy their amazing colour from spring until late autumn. Elsewhere in the developing new garden we need to think production as well as pure ornamental. It is the type of rootstock with fruit trees that determines the overall vigour of the variety, so you do need to check the best options for growing apples, pears, plums and cherries in large pots. If you fancy covering your fences with fruit there’s plenty of options – espalier, cordon (even crossing cordons, pictured page 22) and fan-trained will give you some useful crops on sunny walls.

Grapes (the variety ‘Phoenix’, pictured) and Kiwi fruits will give a luxuriant feel to arbours and pergolas as they can twine, cloth and ascend with gusto. TOP TIP If you are planning to establish hedges, climbers or fruit close to walls and fences, do improve the soil where you intend to plant. Make the border at least 2ft (60cm) wide and add plenty of Tree, Shrub & Rose Planting Compost or some well-rotted manure into the planting hole which needs to be a generous size to accommodate the root system. Work in some Bonemeal fertiliser to the planting hole prior to final planting. Do use some friendly fungi (Rootgrow) to the base of the planting hole if establishing a potted plant or use some of the Rootgrow Gel for best results on bare root stock. Make sure you water the plants in and allow 2 gallon watering can per plant. Finally, make sure the young plants are well irrigated during the first season to ensure successful establishment.
