Welcome... November ISSUE 2015
...Remember, remember…….and yes, we have some fireworks for you in this November edition of our marvellous magazine! Whether you’re warming yourself by a bonfire, waving sparklers or toasting marshmallows, nobody can deny that Bonfire night is a special date in the calendar, to share with family and friends and enjoy the spectacle. Whatever your favourite part of the festivities, remember to keep safe – why not choose one of the many professional fireworks displays locally – and keep pets safe indoors, too. Being with those you love, on a memorable day in the calendar, are important themes for another date which will soon be upon us – Remembrance Sunday. Buy your poppy and wear it with pride, in recognition of the sacrifice made by so many, in order that our lives could be free. Conflicts around the world, leading to fear, tragedy and the current refugee crisis, are constant reminders of what their sacrifice has saved us from, so why not make a difference by donating a little money or spare items of clothing to one of the many collections for displaced people who have nothing. A thoughtful note this month, but a sombre moment to reflect is fitting before the celebrations yet to come – we’re on the countdown to Christmas! Until next time……….

With Christmas Time Approaching With Christmas now approaching all too quickly and many of us watching the pennies even more closely this year, it’s more necessary than ever to cut costs and still have a fabulous time. By starting a few weeks ahead, there’s time to plan and plenty of ways to save: Buy one extra item with your shopping each week, and make your own Christmas hamper – cranberry sauce, crackers, a bottle or two – spread the cost over the next few weeks Get together with plenty of friends and family for a huge Christmas dinner – share the cooking, everyone brings something, agree to only token presents and enjoy a family occasion, instead of big presents and each household cooking for themselves – small children will remember this long after toys would be outgrown or broken, and happy memories are priceless. Make your own – jam, chutney, fudge, cakes – the list is endless!
• •
•
•
Decorate plain gift boxes, or use gingham and ribbon to make jars look pretty. For pennies, you can give something you have created, to be enjoyed over the festive season. Look on selling sites, on social media sales groups, or even cards in shop windows – many items are just as good ‘nearly new’ and less than half the price. Antiques and vintage items are valuable yet second (or third!) hand, so why should all presents have to come from a shop? Give vouchers – special offer sites regularly have cut price pamper treatments, meals out, activity or spa days, for a fraction of the actual cost, so why not buy one of these for a friend – the present will be worth considerably more than you paid! Get crafty! Old clothes can become patchwork cushions, a ball of wool can become a cosy scarf……there are so many online videos with step-by-step instructions, it’s possible to learn simply any skill!

Healthy Halloween idea
Halloween means sweets, sweets and more….sweets! To my children, anyway… but here are some superb ideas for healthy ghoulish treats, to delight the little ones, without requiring a trip to the dentist.
Banana ghosts and Satsuma pumpkins
A very simple idea, easily made with even the smallest children. You’ll need: a pack of small bananas, some chocolate drops, a pack of satsumas and a stick of celery Cut each banana in half, and stand them up on the cut end. Add chocolate drops for the eyes and mouth. Peel the satsumas and arrange on a plate; cut the celery stick into small pieces to become the ‘stalks’ and gently push into the top of each satsuma.

FISH, FISH AN We are often being told of the benefits of fish in our diets, with recommendations that we should all be eating at least two portions of the oily variety, such as salmon, every week. But according to recent research, we are nearly all neglecting the health benefits that this readilyavailable and low-cost protein offers. According to Dr Rachael Gibbs of the University of Reading, both men and women are falling below the recommended intakes of omega 3 oils - easily obtainable through regular consumption of fish such as fresh or smoked salmon.
Email: info@winwoodroofing.com
This means, according to scientific study, that we are not reaping the benefits which can start as early as in the womb and take us through to old age. The health benefits of the oils that are found in fish have been well documented, but more recent evidence suggests that there are even more reasons we should take a closer look at our diets throughout our life-stages.

ND MORE FISH For example it is known that regular intake of omega oils will ensure good foetal development, offering better immunity and higher birth weights. But more recently it has been discovered that they could also reduce the risk of post-natal depression and improve IQ in babies.
SERVICE
Good quality omega nutrition also ensures normal development of the retina and the brain, supporting normal learning and development - and now it is also thought that it can lower the risk of allergic disease. The benefits continue through childhood, where emerging evidence suggests that behavioural disorders such as ADHD can be managed through diet. They continue into later life where it is now thought that fish oils can reduce the risk of dementia and signs of ageing.
Call us NOW for the latest SKY offers
Sara Stanner, Science Programme Manager of the British Nutrition Foundation, added that fish plays a very useful role in a healthy diet. As studies continue, it is thought that it has far more health benefits than originally believed. For example, fish intake is now thought to protect against cardiovascular disease and a number of cancers and may even help control Type 2 Diabetes. 'Studies also suggest that maternal fish intake during pregnancy may reduce the risk of eczema and asthma in babies,' she said, adding that other components in fish such as selenium, potassium and vitamins could also be adding valuable nutrients to healthy diets. Therefore it is surprising to note that, according to information from the Expenditure and Food Survey, the amount of fish being eaten has fallen across the UK in the last few years - possibly due to the recession and families making cut-backs. However, it is thought that more than 1 million fresh salmon meals are eaten in the UK every day and fresh fish will become the fastest growing protein of the last few years - meaning we will all soon be reaping the ever-increasing benefits of a nutritious diet.

Beauty and grooming aren’t just luxuries, they are an absolute necessity – looking your best makes you feel better, boosts self esteem and increases your appeal to prospective employers, thereby improving your earning potential. With facts like these, it’s much easier to justify the little expense of a new accessory, monthly facial or manicure; they’re not just making you look better, they’re improving your worth – both mentally and financially. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to make a difference, and sometimes buying big and spending more can save in the long run – it’s about savvy shopping. If finances are tight, look at the aspects that most affect you, and concentrate on those areas. Expensive perfumes and high end serums can be bought more cheaply online, and compromises can be made on cheaper moisturisers and cleansers – Aqueous cream, available in big tubs from pharmacies for just a few pounds, makes an excellent cleanser and moisturises the skin, too.

e sparkle... Remember that a scarf in your perfect colour will light up your face and saves money on a new outfit or expensive treatments. For tips on choosing the perfect colours for you, enlist the help of a friend, a well lit room, and swatches of fabric or clothes in a whole range of colours. Try three different shades of pink, for example – and see the difference each makes to your face. Skin tones frequently fit the traditional seasonal colour types, and once you have found ‘your’ colours, choosing flattering clothes and shades of makeup becomes so much easier!

Th e G ar d en in N ove mbe r Bird’s eye view There is little to match the pleasure gained from the sights and sounds of birds visiting your garden, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. As their natural environment becomes ever scarcer, gardens play an increasingly important role, supplying birds with food, shelter, water and protection from predators. To create a bird heaven, provide as many different sorts of plants and cover as you can, such as densely covered flower beds, a compost heap, lawn,

hedge, pond or thick shrubs. Each bird species has different needs, so to attract the widest range it is necessary to put out different foods, for example assorted seeds, fat balls, mealworms, nuts etc. If you’re short on space, try to grow native trees or shrubs that bear berries or fruits and will also provide cover and nest sites, such as Hawthorn, Clematis, Crab Apple, Pyracantha, Cotoneaster or Hedera (Ivy). Alternatively, grow plants with seeds that the birds love to feed on, like Globe Thistles, Sunflowers and Teasels. If you are planning to establish a new hedge this winter then a selection of mixed native plants will provide a perfect haven for your feathered friends – whether for food, shelter or nesting. The mix of plants in our mixed native hedge consists mainly of Hawthorn (Quickthorn) as well as Sloe (Blackthorn), Dog Rose, Spindle,(pictured right) Guelder Rose, Hazel, Field Maple and Sweet Briar Rose amongst others. You’ll get the best results if you plant through the bare-root season, so aim to get your new hedge planted by early March.

The winter essentials
For garden birds, a clean, regular supply of water to drink and bathe in improves their chances of survival, and provides hours of entertainment for bird-watchers. Bird baths come in a range of sizes, materials and prices. A good bird bath should be sturdy with a non-slip surface and a gentle gradient. Do ensure the design is easy to clean and to refill. In winter, keep your bird bath ice free longer by filling it with warm water. You can help birds to survive by providing a regular supply of food. There is a huge range available (see the guide below) so check in-store at the Garden Centre for what’s available here.

Bird feeders come in a huge range of shapes and sizes. Most take seeds or peanuts, but never feed whole peanuts loose – as they can choke baby birds. If you want to attract the widest variety of species, provide different kinds of food at different levels to attract ground-feeding and arboreal (tree) species.
Protecting your valuables
A basic bird table is a must and they can be mounted on a pole, hung from a tree or fixed to a wall or fence. To help reduce the risk of pests and diseases, keep your bird table and feeders clean, and remove any surplus food. All sorts of food can be put on your bird table ranging from prepared suet and seed bird cakes to mealworms, grated cheese, fruit (dried or fresh), cooked vegetables or cooked rice, preferably natural brown – but avoid salty foods.

Although some birds eat garden pests (aphids on Roses are probably the most feasted upon), other eating habits can be a nuisance. Jays may demolish your Peas and Beans, Bullfinches may strip your fruit buds and Herons may catch your goldfish. Bird scaring devices can all work in the short-term, but for long-term protection try netting or a fruit cage – and check regularly in case birds have become trapped. A fruit cage should last for years and can be moved around the garden, so should be worth the investment.
Best food for birds guide
A great natural source of energy, fat and protein, which the birds love and will never hang around on the bird table. The food needs to be placed on a flat feeder. It is loved by many like Blackbirds, Tits, Thrushes, Wrens, Dunnocks and especially Robins. During the breeding season you can get mini or mashed mealworms as the big whole dried ones can choke the fledglings. Why not soak them in water to stop them time blowing away and as another way to keep the birds hydrated! Peanuts: Nearly all garden birds like peanuts as they are high in energy and fat, but do not feed them in the summer except from a special feeder which ensures the parent birds peck them into small pieces as large pieces can get stuck in fledgling and juveniles throats. Suet treats and fat balls: Suet treats are especially good in winter as they are rich in fat

and protein. There are many different styles which can be hung on their own or in feeders and are great all year round, but make sure to remove all packaging including any plastic mesh bags as these can harm the birds. Fat balls are easy to make yourself or buy them cheaply as the birds adore them. All Seasons Blends: An excellent wheat-free alternative to feed the birds throughout the year rather than just in the winter. The mix is perfect for feeding in bird feeders, on bird tables and on the ground. The range of seeds it contains will attract a wide range of birds, including Blue Tits, Coal Tits, Robins, Greenfinches, Chaffinches, Dunnocks and Sparrows amongst others. Fruit: Chop up Apples, Pears etc. and either hang in wire feeders or on flat feeders or you can buy a special spike – feeders to hold the fruit while the birds feed off them. Dried fruit is a favourite too, especially with Blackbirds and Robins. Seeds from melon are popular as well. Kitchen Waste: Bacon rind (chopped up small); over ripe fruit and even leftovers from meals can supplement garden birds food intake. But NO BREAD, especially white, as birds need food with high-nutritional benefit and bread is bulky, fills up their bellies with ‘empty’ food and doesn’t give them nearly as much nutrition as they need in their busy lives.

Fresh Dixie are one of the UK’s most exciting and up and coming cross-over jazz artists. Their unique sound fuses elements of jazz, pop and soul and their live show has gained a strong reputation for its energy and infectiousness. 2014 saw them self-release their EP ‘Dress Pretty, Dance Ugly’ to great acclaim as well as playing various festivals and shows including Royal Albert Hall (Elgar Room), Elbjazz Festival (Hamburg, Germany), Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, WOMAD Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival and Cheltenham Jazz Festival. To round off the year the band also travelled to Malaysia to perform at the Penang Island Jazz Festival. More recently the band have been writing and recording new music and also a number of live videos at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios.
