Welcome...
October ISSUE 2014
....After the glorious Indian summer we have enjoyed in September, it’s all downhill for temperatures from here! October heralds crisp frosts, crunchy leaves underfoot and our wardrobes take on the cosier hues of autumn. The first chilly evenings and darker mornings make me think longingly about switching on the heating – but there are a few safeguards before you prepare to get those radiators chugging! Boilers need to be serviced every year, to ensure there are no dangerous gases seeping into our homes and to keep them working efficiently to keep the costs down. Solid fuel heating – whether a wood burner in the living room or cooker in the kitchen – needs the flue swept about now, before the cold weather gets underway, and may well need regular sweeping throughout the winter, depending on what you’re burning. Speak to your friendly local chimney sweep about the best maintenance plan for your home, to keep the fire crackling nicely and your family cosy and warm all season long. Until the November issue our warmest wishes to you all!

18 Years of fun meeting great people Dear Readers Yes it’s 18 years ago that we opened the doors as Buckingham Ford, taking over from the Phillips family who had been working from this site since the late 1800’s as Phillips and sons. Over that time we have met some great people as customers who we now consider friends, we have also been lucky that we have a great team of people working here, with four who have been with us since we started.

Although Mike and I are from far away in south Bucks (Aylesbury) most of our staff are local people with over 70% growing up and going to school in Buckingham before working with us, it is true that we have always looked to employ local people, as we always wanted to be the local garage. So here’s to the next 18 Years of Buckingham Ford and a big thank you to you for helping us make this happen. Regards

Tax Disc – the Remix! From October 1st, vehicle tax goes digital, with the familiar Tax Disc on display in your windscreen no longer a legal requirement. Here is our five-point checklist for everything you’ll need to know: • You’ll still have to tax your car, but there’s no disc to display • You’ll still get reminders when you need to renew your tax • You can now pay by monthly Direct Debit, to spread the cost • When you sell a car, the tax stops – the buyer has to re-tax it immediately and the seller gets a refund of any whole months of tax remaining • There’s all the advice and info you need online - https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicletax-changes

Fix it before Winter! If you’re like me, a little cautious with the pennies, you might have an annoyingly drippy outside tap, or a suspicious damp patch on the ceiling, or gutters that leak when there’s a downpour, and think – yes, I’ll fix it soon…….. With sharp frosts and wet and windy weather a certainty in the next few months, now is the time to save yourself money – by fixing these little niggles before they get worse. Keeping up with little maintenance tasks, by calling in trustworthy local tradesmen, saves money in the long run, by preventing any serious problems occurring when the weather does its worst. Have a look through the adverts on our pages, talk to friends to see who they would recommend, and don’t delay – fix it today!

Keep your sunkissed glow into Autumn Now that the evenings are drawing in, how can you keep that Summer glow? Healthy, glowing skin makes us look and feel so much happier, but a lot of your skin’s appearance comes from within! Puzzled? I was – but apparently, what we eat and drink is as important to how good we look and feel as beauty treatments, lotions and potions. Here are my recommendations to keep yourself looking and feeling great all year round! Sleep – dark circles under the eyes are easier to avoid than cover up, so aim for eight hours rest a night whenever you can Water – drinking plenty of clear fluids keeps your whole body hydrated, makes you look and feel brighter and plumps up the skin Diet – not the starvation kind!! Fruit and vegetables – at least seven portions a day of all different colours – help us get all the vitamins and essential nutrients our bodies need to look their best Exercise – a brisk walk, jog or swim brings colour to your cheeks and makes you feel fantastic! Happiness – take some time for you every day, even just a moment to have coffee and chat with a friend; it’s official – being happy makes us look and feel healthier Care – for your skin! Gentle exfoliation once a week and applying a rich moisturiser before bed keeps skin healthy, smooth and supple and maintains that glorious summer glow well into Autumn.

The Garden in October What’s cooking in the flower garden? The days may well be drawing in, but it’s never too early to think about spring bulbs, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Thinking about it, bulb planting, even just a few daffodils, should carry a health warning. Let me explain. I remember in my college days planting huge net bags of narcissi in the college grounds and we were given strict instructions by the tutor to toss the bulbs over our shoulder. That’s right, great big handfuls thrown at force to create a natural drift effect. Basically where the bulbs fell would be where they were planted using a bulb planter tool. Well, that’s all well and good if you are doing this by yourself, however get a dozen eager students and it can quickly turn into bedlam or should that be ‘bulblam’! Still, apart from bruising to the head, knee and shoulder blade I survived to tell the tale. But return to the area the following spring and wow, it is well worth all the effort. Naturalising is a
process to replicate the natural drifts that would or should happen if Mother Nature had her hand in it. Use a bulb planter for precision planting where the bulbs lay, or if you are establishing a drift of small bulbs, such as Crocus, Chionodoxa or Scilla, carefully remove a square of turf and plant underneath before carefully replacing it. So, when it comes to creating wonderful displays in pots and hanging baskets do we resort to the same rule? Well, no. The method we employee is actually more akin to the Great British Bake Off than pure horticulture. Confused? I’ll explain. If you plants a few Tulips or Crocus in a pot they look attractive, but the display is relatively short lived. However, if you employ the layering method - think

Victoria Sponge with multi layers of jam and butter cream or a traditional Italian Lasagne - and plant bulbs in layers starting with the last-to-flower bulbs first (at the bottom) and then moving through the second, third or even fourth layers, adding compost (any multi-purpose compost will suffice) until you reach a few inches from the top of the pot, the results will be spectacular! Do this and you’ll find the layered display will start to bloom from February beginning with the Crocus, continuing with Iris reticulata, early ‘February Gold’, Muscari (Grape Hyacinths) ‘King Alfred’ daffodils and finally some large-flowered Tulips or a few Hyacinths for the last flush of colour. From practical experience not only does the process of layering bulbs provide heaps more colour, fragrance and interest, it also greatly extends the display time of your bulbs from a few weeks to two to three months! So, regimented layers of bulbs or randomly planted bulbs? Both poles apart in planting technique yet they provide a simple solution to ensuring you get the best results from the bulbs within the garden location. I think we know which of the two methods Mary Berry would prefer! Perfect spring displays to be proud of with not a soggy bottom in sight!

General Bulb Planting Advice
• Bulbs ideally suited to pot culture include
Snowdrops, Crocus, Iris danfordiae and reticulata, Grape Hyacinths, Scillas, Puschkinias, Chionodoxas, Anemones, Hyacinths, Narcissus, particularly the small-cupped and species varieties, and Tulips, particularly the fosteriana varieties, such as ‘Orange Emperor’ and ‘Purissima’, Single Earlies, such as ‘Candy Prince’ and ‘Cairo’, Double Earlies and Triumph tulips, such as ‘Havran’. Try to include some Tulip ‘Black Parrot’ in your displays as this variety is not only Bulb of the Year but it makes a striking display on its own or when used in conjunction with bright apricot, yellow and orange flowers. • Drainage is key to success with bulbs, so all pots and containers need one of more Vincent Landscapes of Buckingham est1990

holes in the bottom. These holes then need to be covered with crocks – pottery shards or pebbles – to keep the holes from being clogged with compost. • In pots, you can plant your bulbs closer than you do in the garden. Even so, they shouldn’t touch each other or the sides of the pot. • If planting just one layer of bulbs, plant at the same depth as you would in the garden – at a depth of twice their height at least (a minimum of 3in/10cm). • Water on planting, and regularly in the first weeks when their roots are forming. Don’t let the compost dry out. • Pots planted with spring-flowering bulbs can tolerate a certain amount of freezing weather, but will need some protection in moderate to severe periods of frost. Cover them with branches or circle the pots with bubble wrap to help insulate. • It is a good idea to feed your bulbs when in flower and for around a month afterwards to help build the bulb up for the next year. You can use any Tomato fertiliser or a granular slow release fertiliser such as Osmocote.

Three bulbs to turn your lawn blue! Simply plant these three types of bulbs –Chionodoxa forbesii , Scilla bifolia and Scilla siberica – in your lawn to create a lovely effect come early spring. They will quickly increase and spread as they generally self-seed once established. Use a bulb planter and plant three bulbs in each hole for best effect. The secret for repeat displays is to wait between six and eight weeks after flowering - at least before mowing. This allows the bulbs to die down naturally to replenish their food stocks. It is also a good idea to lift any leafy clumps and bed them out singly to allow them to bulk up. Mowing usually has to wait until late June but you could make the area look maintained by mowing round it.
