Half Term Hobb Stuck for ideas to entertain the kids this half term holiday? Here are some favourites, one for every weekday! • Make a wormery – use a clear glass or plastic container, put in alternate layers of soil and sand, leaving a space at the top, and add some worms from your compost heap or the garden. Put pieces of fruit or vegetable peelings on the surface, cover the container and put it in a dark cupboard for a few days. Have a look at what has happened - watch the worms tunnel, making patterns through the layers - fascinating for adults and children alike!

Children can butter bread, choose fillings, try new tastes and combine unusual textures and flavours – how about ham & jam, chicken & sultanas, soft cheese and grated carrot, or sweetcorn & hummus? •Learn a craft – how about knitting, or card making, nail art or woodwork? Get together with a bunch of friends and take turns to teach the kids a skill. Minimal materials required, just enthusiasm and delight in shared knowledge. •Camping trip – to the sitting room! Little children, aged 3-8, absolutely love this one. Works best with a group, so call on

the neighbours, cousins or friends, and ‘holiday’ together! Find plenty of old sheets, torches, maybe a sleeping bag and an old clothes airer or spare kitchen chairs. Drape the sheets over furniture to create ‘tents’, find snacks, story books and travel boardgames, and enjoy an old-fashioned pretend camping trip. No technology required, parental peace and quiet guaranteed, and it doesn’t matter what the weather’s like! •Picnic at the park – pack a basket of goodies, add a flask of hot chocolate if the weather’s less than lovely, take plenty of wet weather gear and have fun!! If you still have energy to spare, add a ‘mystery walk’ along public footpaths across the fields, climb stiles, spot local landmarks, and find a roundabout route home again.
