Phone Bill Hoax Calls Please pass on to friends and family I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was dis-connecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of ÂŁ31.00 or it would be ÂŁ118.00 to re-connect at a later date.. The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental! I asked the caller's name - he gave me the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152. Obviously the fellow realized I didn't believe his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this. AND HE DID !! My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again. Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made and he said credit card, there and then. I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.
He hung up. I dialled 1471 - number withheld, I phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognized., so I phoned the police to let them know. I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently, but it is escalating. Their advice was to let as many people as possible know of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please make as many friends & family aware of this. How is it done? This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800 152 which takes you through to BT Business. The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable. By the way this is not about getting the cash as this would not get past merchant services - it is all about getting the credit card details which include the security number so that it can be used for far larger purchases.

A CLEAN FLUE IS A SAFE FLUE
With the winter approaching, many of us will be turning up the heating and lighting the fire or stove for that extra bit of comfort. Last year Northamptonshire District Fire and Rescue Service attended 123 chimney fires with 16 of these being dealt with by our nearest stations.* Some of the affected home owners had to be taken to hospital or treated on site for smoke inhalation and other injuries. The cost of redecorating or even repairing your home after such an event can run into thousands of pounds. Don’t Panic though! The aim of this article is not to worry you, but to let you know that over ninety percent of chimney fires can easily be prevented by simply making sure your chimney is swept properly and regularly. Flues which have a gas fire vented into them should also be kept clean and clear of dust and spiders’ webs to avoid fumes and carbon monoxide becoming a problem.
This is the average amount of nesting material removed from a blocked chimney after a pair of jackdaws breeding for one season. This amount normally blocks a chimney from about six feet down from the chimney pot into the flue. The nest blocks the exit of smoke and carbon monoxide from the flue and causes chimney fires or smoke ingress to living quarters.
All professional bodies concerned with fires or chimneys recommend the following sweeping regime,
A complete smoked / mummified jackdaw removed from a partial blockage following a chimney fire.
Smokeless fuel on open fire or stove - Once a year Bituminous coal / logs on open fire - Twice a year Wood burning stoves - Quarterly when in use Gas fires / oil fired appliances - Once a year or recommended manufactures advice
Chimney sweeping is no longer the messy job it once was in Victorian times. A good sweep tidies up after himself and generally only leaves behind a clean and more importantly a safe flue. Don’t be vulnerable this winter, don’t become a Fire Brigade statistic or spend time, money and effort redecorating, give yourself peace of mind by getting your chimney swept.
This picture shows cracking in chimney pots and capping plinth. The cracks allow rain into the stack which can cause damp if not rectified. In winter months this rain freezes forcing open the cracks causing the pots and stack to become unstable and to possibly collapse or pots to fall off. This picture shows a Flue Access plate and gas flue blocked by spiders’ webs and twigs. Even though gas fires produce little or no soot they still require sweeping to prevent the above from happening. This gas fire was emitting carbon monoxide into the living room of an elderly couple. Fortunately they had a suitable carbon monoxide alarm that warned them of the danger and had their fire serviced. The Gas Safe Engineer who attended the arranged for their chimney to be swept during his servicing of the fire.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Anger Anger is a result of thinking that we have been unfairly treated or disrespected, or that others have broken or fallen short of our rules, standards or expectations, and we won't stand for it. Thinking this way leads us to feel angry, which stimulates the body's adrenaline response which is our body's way of helping us to cope with either fighting, or running away ('fight or flight' response). We respond to those thoughts and feelings, by acting, or feeling an urge to act, in threatening or aggressive ways. Thoughts that often occur: I'm being treated unfairly I'm being disrespected They're breaking a rule or standard I won't stand for it
10
Identify your triggers What or when are the times when you are more likely to get angry? If you can see the patterns, then maybe you can do something about those situations, and do something different. Behind the wheel? At work? When stressed? With certain people? When you've been drinking or using other substances? Ways to help calm anger Is there another way of dealing with this? What would be the most helpful and effective action to take? (for me, for the situation, for the other person)

HEALTH & BEAUTY Visualise yourself dealing with the situation in a calm, non-aggressive but assertive way, respecting the rights and opinions of all others involved. Counteract the body's adrenaline response - it's readiness for action, by using that energy healthily. Practice calming or mindful breathing – breathe slowly in for four seconds out for five seconds. This one act alone will help reduce the physical sensations, emotions and intensity of thoughts. Go for a walk, run or cycle, or maybe do some gardening or housework.

Cut Childcare Costs! Anyone who pays for childcare will know just how big a chunk of a monthly salary it can eat up. But many parents still don’t know about Childcare Vouchers – these can help you to make significant savings on childcare costs. These special vouchers are a government scheme that allows you to pay for childcare from your pretax salary. In most cases, part of your salary is paid in childcare vouchers which are not taxed. The vouchers can be used to pay for childcare for children up to the age of 15 and are valid for any
nursery, playgroup, after school clubs, and childminders etc who are registered and regulated. The scheme is operated through employers and many companies in this area take part. Any parent or person with parental responsibility is eligible for the childcare vouchers but to get them your employer must run a scheme. Check with your employer first but if they are not registered, you can explain the mutual benefits (the scheme costs a company nothing to run and actually saves them money as NI is not paid on the vouchers). Both parents are eligible for the scheme and can combine vouchers if necessary. Beware that taking childcare vouchers can greatly impact tax credits and so can leave you worse off. Check out www.moneysavingexpert.com or a local financial advisor to help you make an informed choice.

Written by Chris Day Buckingham Nurseries & Garden Centre 01280 822133
The time is ripe for picking It’s been a bumper harvest for fruit this year, despite the dodgy dry spring and cold winter, so if you have been bitten by the grow-your-own fruit bug, now is time to prepare for 2012, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. If you are one of the many newlyconverted grow-your-own enthusiasts, have mastered veggie growing and are now starting to grow fruit or, perhaps you’ve taken your first tentative steps into growing strawberries or raspberries this summer, then what a season it has been! The glut of English strawberries even encouraged one major supermarket to sell the first strawberry and clotted cream sandwich! Elsewhere, the UK’s apple crops are maturing weeks early and if you’ve a plum tree in the garden, well it’s certainly paid for its keep this year!
So, how do we progress and do even better in 2012? Well, let’s begin with those reliable, must-have fruits that you can put in as bare-rooted plants from November onwards. Reliable croppers include the berries : Raspberries (especially ‘Autumn Bliss’ and ‘Polka’), Gooseberries (opt for mildew resistant varieties like ‘Hinnonmaki’, ‘Invicta’ & ‘Captivator’) and Blackberries (‘Karaka Black’ and ‘Loch Ness’ take some beating). There’s always a new raspberry to tempt us and this year is no exception with two tasty numbers – ‘Cascade Delight’, a summer fruiting variety which is able to withstand wet, clay soil where other raspberries perhaps would have previously failed. The other variety, ‘Sugana’, has the ability to crop twice in a season, August/September in the first year, then June and August/September thereafter. The fruits are larger than traditional autumn-cropping varieties.

The Garden in October Success with soft fruits, especially the likes of strawberries, the currants (black, red, and white) and even blueberries, is that bumper crops can be enjoyed within a couple of growing seasons of planting and therein lies the attraction. However, the next level is to buy top fruit trees such as Apples, Pears, Plums, Peaches and Quinces amongst others. Here you need to do your homework, decide what space you have, the aspect in the garden and what you would ideally like to grow. With this information you can then peruse fruit catalogues looking at varieties, rootstocks etc... Feel free to come to us for advice to enable you to make your final decision. The way fruit is trained may also provide opportunities in the garden where a dedicated area for fruit growing cannot be given. The use of walls and fences means fan, espalier or cordon trained fruits can be grown
successfully, but the aspect must be sunny. Subdividing the garden using fruits is another option, what about raspberries set on wires, and a regimented row of cordon apple trees or push the boat out by creating a lavish archway framed with trained Grapevines or Hops. The fun aspect of fruit, perhaps even more than vegetables, is they can be easily integrated into the fabric of the garden, looking attractive, interesting and providing useful crops. The purchase of fruit trees is, however, a considered purchase, you are spending money for long-term productivity, as well as an investment in preserving some of our fine varieties of fruit trees. Now is the optimum time to get your soil prepared for fruit planting so you need to start by clearing out the weeds as you don’t want any unnecessary competition at root level. Next improve the soil with cont page 24
