Have you been neglecting Herbert? Yours may be called Herbie, Speedy or just plain Freddie the Focus, but since the recession an awful lot of people have been neglecting the car they love and rely on, and think they have done very well saving ÂŁ15 here and ÂŁ35 there on a car service or an Mot, and the majority may be right.

These monthly advertising magazines are delivered to local businesses and residents door to door in Brackley, Buckingham & Towcester and surrounding villages.

The longest running, most effective form of advertising door to door locally according to advertisers. 4

Unfortunately we are starting to see an increasing number of cars that have been neglected, but not always by their owners, as some believe they handed their car over to a professional, who has then not done the job properly - it could be as simple as not putting the right oil in – the one that the engine is designed to run on.

114 Tanners Drive, Blakelands, Milton Keynes, MK14 5BP

Tel: 01908 218875

We have seen one case of the engine blowing up from the wrong oil. Cheap oil has been put in and this blocked the oil ways as it is too thick, leading to parts of the engine not being lubricated and then failing, never to run again.

And then there are the cars that have just not been serviced, but relied on the fact they passed an MOT so it must be alright.

The Garden in March

D o y o u w a n t t o d o y o u r b i t t o m a k e y o u r g a rd e n m o re w i l d l i f e - f r i e n d l y t h i s y e a r ? Well, it’s actually a lot easier than it sounds, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. A walk on the wild side

If you have been watching Sarah Raven’s excellent BBC2 TV series Bees, Butterflies and Blooms recently you will know we gardeners can clearly make a difference in increasing wildlife – both in numbers and encouraging diverse species into our gardens. So, is there a secret to encouraging this vital wildlife, which is so essential in the pollination of many of our wild flowers and food crops, as well as supporting the food chain for other insects and mammals? Wild pollinators, such as bumblebees and hoverflies are responsible for most of the pollination of wild

flowers and crops in the UK, and it is these insects, rather than honeybees, which effectively are the unsung heroes that are working hard for us. The key to encouraging most of our wildlife (insects, bees and birds) is to try and establish a wide and varied range of British native plants and the easiest way is to grow these plants together as a native hedge row. This consists of a mixture of different species, and usually contains around half Quickthorn (Hawthorn) and the rest made up from species including Blackthorn (sloe), Spindle, Dogwood, Field Maple, Common Alder etc. You

can even add the likes of Holly for its evergreen qualities and berries. Many of our native plants have beautiful flowers, leaves and fruit – all perfect to encourage a wider biodiversity. So, if you are planning to plant a new hedge or replace an existing one, then a hedge of mixed native species would be a good choice. You can embellish it with the odd evergreen, such as Holly or even add a few Hornbeam or Beech for extended winter interest with their leaf retention. If a hedge isn’t feasible, how about establishing a native tree to wow the wildlife? There are plenty to choose from, just check the height if you are planning to establish it near to the house. Prunus padus, better known as the Bird Cherry tree, for example, produces masses of white flowers in May followed by red cherries, which are edible. It can reach 10m (30ft), so this one would be best planted 15m (45ft) away from the house. Crab apples, especially the named varieties, which are great insect magnets, are useful as they tend to reach just 6m (20ft) or so, making them perfect for the smaller plot. Other useful native trees to consider include; Hazel (Corylus avellana), Small Leaved Lime (Tilia cordata),

Crab Apple (Malus sylvestris) and Silver Birch (Betula pendula). Hoverflies (a close-up pictured) are well worth encouraging, not only do these pollinate flowers, but they also eat aphids, mealy bugs and other pests. You can attract these easily by sowing and growing the likes of Achillea, Cosmos, Limnanthes (poached egg plant) Lobelia (edging and trailing types), Sedums and Thymes. Finally, don’t forget to plant for butterflies. According to Butterfly Conservation planting lots of different nectar-rich plants is the key to increasing the species likely to visit your garden.

For the spring you can plant Aubrietia, Pansies, Primroses, Wallflowers and Violas. These species are vital for butterflies coming out of hibernation. To help build up food reserves for the butterflies in the winter establish good numbers of Buddleja, Honeysuckle, Lavender, Marigolds, Michaelmas Daisies and Rudbeckia ‘Goldstrum’ (pictured). Top Tip Prolong flowering by deadheading flowers, mulching with organic compost, and watering well to keep your plants healthy. Plants that are well-watered will produce far more nectar for hungry butterflies. Likewise, newly-planted hedging plants need to be watered regularly to ensure their roots establish and the plants develop the necessary framework for stem and flower growth. METAL
