Is the grow-your-own trend running out of steam and reached its plateau? Not in the slightest, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Even on this summer’s series of ITV’s Love Your Garden, Alan Titchmarsh and team included raised beds to bring the delights of home-grown vegetables, and fan-trained fruits to clothe walls and fences, to the much-deserving garden owners. The momentum to reap the rewards of tasty home-grown crops from all sizes of plots, beds or pots has now become a family pursuit with children and parents getting hands-on, involved and passionate about growing tasty crops. We know as we speak to them all the time! Schools are providing opportunities, under the National Curriculum, to help children gain a better understanding of where our food comes from. How times have changed from just the preserve of the older generation. This is great news in the on-going evolution of Good Life and self-sufficiency. We are seeing tremendous amounts of skill being transferred on allotments up and down the country which is something we could only have dreamt of a few years ago. Earlier this year, James Wong, the popular ‘geeky’ ethnobotanist, all-round foodie and TV presenter
spoke to gardeners at our Garden Centre encouraging us to think about what we should grow. The pure economics of raising some popular crops such as maincrop potatoes, cauliflower and parsnips, as they take a lot of space, raises the question, “Are they worth the bother as the space could be used for more unusual crops?” James’s passionate enthusiasm to promote a better understanding of his Homegrown Revolution was thought-provoking. On the back of this and continuing the theme of extending the crops we can successfully grow, many lesser known vegetables and floral edibles, that are not widely available, are now being introduced by seed companies, to excite our taste buds, namely Suttons and Thompson & Morgan. As autumn moves into early winter, now is a great time to start planning and planting crops for 2014. If you’ve mastered your vegetable crops, now is the opportunity to branch out and consider growing some fruit. If you have the space (and even a pot will do) then Apples, Pears, Plums and Cherries can be put into the frame.

However, for many, it is the soft fruit bushes that might be their first tentative step into raising delicious fruits. So, what should we consider? Well, check out what your family favourites are. Is it sweet strawberries, luscious raspberries, mildly sharp red and white currants, super vitamin C rich blueberries or cranberries? However, it is gooseberries which I’d like to tempt you with this time. Why? Well, they are really easy to grow, coping even with a modest amount of shade and able to be productive in any fertile soil provided it is well-drained. Add some Bonemeal into the planting hole and the addition of RootGrow will greatly help in the development of the roots in the establishing process. Aim to allow 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) space between each gooseberry bush. The plants will quickly establish and should provide a small crop in their first season as long as they are not pruned at planting. It is important to select bushy plants with three or four stems already in place when you are purchasing your plants. You can buy varieties for desert, culinary or dual purpose use, and modern breeding has given us mildew resistant varieties together with more robust

habit and growth. Opt for bare-rooted plants for dormant season planting (late October – March). Container grown gooseberries can be planted all year round, but these are a little more expensive. Good varieties to look out for include: ‘Invicta’, a green culinary variety with excellent mildew resistance and a heavy cropper. ‘Jubilee’, which is an improved form of the old and well loved variety ‘Careless’, has heavy crops of large, pale green, good flavoured fruits which can be eaten raw, cooked or frozen. A popular and an old favourite, ‘Whinham’s Industry’, is a dual purpose variety (culinary and desert) and it tolerates heavy soil. Gooseberries are usually grown as a bush, however, plants can be easily trained into cordons (good to divide areas in the fruit garden) and easy picking half-standard, which allows the fruit area to be used more efficiently, perhaps growing other crops beneath. Once planted, apply feed in March using Vitax Q4, or Blood, Fish & Bone and again in May and July with something high in potassium, such as the fertiliser Sulphate of Potash, liquid Tomorite or Comfrey liquid feed. The plants come into flower in late May/early June and the fruits develop gradually through the early summer. You may need to protect the fruits from birds. So, if growing some fruit is going to be on your menu next year, consider all possibilities. A little planning now will no doubt provide tasty rewards, just don’t miss the boat!
