Cloudy2Clear, A Local Family Service With A Smile I think we can all agree that as the weeks and months go by and we move further away from a disastrous 2020, that we can once again start to feel optimistic about the future. Now we are hopefully ready to take on the remainder of 2021 both safely and positively. One thing is for sure though, there have also been some heart warming positives that we can take out of last year. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community and family spirit. When talking to Trevor & Wendy Skidmore the
owners of Cloudy2Clear Northampton & Oxford it became clear that these values have been held for over 13 years. Since buying the local franchise in 2006 they have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community whilst introducing their 2 sons Lloyd & Ross into the family business along with Dan, Mark & Jo as demand for their service has grown.

W h a t s h o u l d I l o o k fo r i n a c o nveya n c e r ? Buying or selling a property can be a stressful process, but there are some easy steps you can take to help to make the conveyancing process as smooth and as calm as possible. Reputation and client satisfaction Take time to research your solicitor or conveyancer. Recommendations by professionals, friends or family are a good starting point. Visit the solicitor’s website and if they have client testimonials, have a read through. Some firms have profiles, photos and contact details of their conveyancers, so you can be reassured who you will be dealing with. Law firms may also be accredited with The Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS), providing evidence of a recognised quality standard. Transparent costs Like with most services, you will probably want to get 2 or 3 quotes for your conveyancing work. Make sure you are comparing like-for-like quotes, that you see a breakdown of the fees and that these are
transparent and fixed from the outset. Regular communication Property conveyancing is often dependent on a ‘chain’ and complications can arise that may hold the process up, so it is important your conveyancer keeps you informed of developments as they happen. When choosing your conveyancer, check how they will be communicating with you, for example, ask if they have direct dial and email, and can you check the progress of your matter online 24/7. If you would like to talk to Spratt Endicott Solicitor’s team of property experts in Buckingham about buying or selling a property, please contact Abigail Grantham, Head of Buckingham office on 01280 730705 or email agrantham@se-law.co.uk.

Healthy drinking – everything in moderation? We’ve read the newspaper articles on the risks of alcohol, seen the government guidelines on units per week and every year there’s Dry January to help us get over our Christmas excesses, but in reality, drinking is as much a part of most social occasions as we are ourselves. With busy lives, too much to do and the need to go out and unwind every so often, it’s no surprise that most of us like an occasional tipple. On a lovely summer’s evening, many of us (erm, yes – guilty as charged!) regularly enjoy a Pimm’s in the garden, a well-earned G&T or few cold pints after a long day at work and it’s a lovely treat to share a bottle of wine over dinner.
We know that regular heavy drinking can lead to all sorts of health problems – causing some cancers, liver disease, obesity and so many more problems, which is enough to make most of us reconsider even the tiniest tipple. So is it ever healthy to have a drink - or two? Studies show that a regular small glass of red wine can be beneficial to health, because it’s packed full of antioxidants, and the anecdotal evidence of people living to a ripe old age is that many swear by a small tot of something each night as the key to long life. The key, as with everything, seems to be everything in moderation. Certain groups of people, such as pregnant women and those with some pre-existing conditions or who are on certain medications, need to stay well away from alcoholic drinks, but for the rest of us, what’s the answer? A unit of alcohol a day seems to be considered safe enough for most of us – when accompanied by a healthy lifestyle – plenty of sleep, regular exercise, a good diet and staying well hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Time to engage with plants and be happy! As the Royal Horticultural Society’s world-famous Chelsea Flower Show moves to a September date, for the first time in its 108-year history, Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day suggests how our gardens have been the real stars of 2021! Gardening has proved once again to be one of the best stress-busters and has helped us cope with the pandemic. Gardening is a great escape, and by simply connecting with the soil and finding solace we can focus the mind

and calm the brain and body, and we are encouraged to take some physical exercise. Gardening is a brilliant way to maintain a sense of order — and gives people a purpose each day. As schools commence their annual summer holidays, here’s another thought. According to the Gardeners’ World presenter Carol Klein gardening should be in the school curriculum to teach children how food is produced and about the vital role of plants in sustaining life on Earth. Lessons in gardening would help to restore the “historic connection with the land” that was lost when people moved from farm work to living in cities. Bravo Carol - we couldn’t agree with you more! PLANT some late colour. Bridging the gap between summer and autumn can be tricky; however there are a few plants that will make the task so much easier! Grab a pen and paper and look out for these on your next visit to the Garden Centre. Phlox are a late-summer essential. They are reliable, hardy, scented herbaceous perennials. Cape fuchsias (Phygelius, pictured) are ideal for hot sunny borders and pot displays. The flowers should last well into September, but you can keep them going longer with regular

dead heading. The list of plants for late-summer colour wouldn’t be complete without Echinaceas (pictured). These hardy perennials can be adapted to suit a variety of planting themes, from tropical to prairie – look out for these in our herbaceous perennial section at the Garden Centre. AFRICAN LILIES One of the standout flowers of the moment is the fabulous agapanthus. There are two tricks to improving
the flowering – one is to let them get congested in their pots, and the other is to feed and water them with gusto while they are flowering. The usual recommendation of Tomato feed is perfect for the job and you’ll be able to enjoy flowers for weeks to come. NOW is the perfect opportunity to autumn-sow hardy annuals for a bumper display early next summer. These can include Centaurea cyanus (Cornflowers, pictured), Poppies and Nigella (Love-in-a-Mist). You can sow direct where you want the annuals to flower next year or you can sow them in

modular seed trays and grow your own ‘plug plants’ for planting later in the year where you want them to bloom. The first spring bulbs will be appearing at the Garden Centre shortly so make sure you secure some prepared Hyacinths for planting up for Christmas. The bulbs will require around 8-10 weeks of darkness to coax them into growth and flower. Try to stagger your plantings - fortnightly until the end of September will ensure flowering continuity through the winter months. PLANTERS AND BASKETS will be in their prime just now; however they do need feeding as the season continues. For just a couple of weeks it is a good idea to change the feeding regime from a high potash feed such as Phostrogen or Tomorite to one with a higher nitrogen level such as Miracle-Gro thus encouraging the plants to produce some good leaf and stem growth. This change of diet will enhance your plants’ potential for producing further flushes of flowers well into the autumn. Roses, especially repeat flowering bush and climbers, will now be between flushes, so do make sure that the plants are trimmed back by around a third to a half (depending on their overall vigour) to help stimulate new flowering stems. You can help this new growth along by applying a handful of Toprose or Vitax Q4 fertiliser around the base of each plant. Do make sure you water this feed in well so the plants can gain the maximum benefit from it. TIME to get lawns back into shape after this summer’s mixed bag of weather. warm, dry weather (we hope!), and also keep it resistant to damage when walked on as the wet weather returns. From September until November you can harden your lawn up for winter by applying an autumn lawn feed, which is high in potassium, but do this after scarifying and aerating it. Also Evergreen Autumn contains a moss killer which will prevent moss getting out of hand over winter. SOW Broad Beans (try ‘Aquadulce’) and hardy Peas (‘Kelvedon Wonder’ and ‘Meteor’ are ideal) for early crops next year. However, covering with a cloche may be required for protection through the winter. You can also get some Onions established before the winter and good varieties to choose from are ‘Autumn Champion’, ‘Electric’ and ‘Radar’ (packs of 50 bulbs for £1.99). Look out for the specially prepared potato tubers which are perfect for starting now to provide some welcome Christmas and New Year potatoes. Good varieties suitable for growing in pots include ‘Charlotte’, ‘Desiree’, ‘Pentland Javelin’, ‘Maris Peer’ and ‘Sharpes Express’. Each variety comes in a pack of 9 tubers priced at £2.99. Here’s what you need to do to get delicious new potatoes for Christmas. Place about 10cm in depth of your compost into your chosen container or bag. If using

a deep container, it can be half-filled but you will ned a container which is at least 45cm deep. Evenly space 3 seed potatoes on top of your layer of compost, an equal distance apart. They should be placed about 12 to 15cm apart. Cover the potatoes up with about another 10cm of compost. Water sparingly to make the compost moist, but be careful not to waterlog them. Always make sure there are drainage holes in the bottom of the bag or container you choose. Keep an eye on them, watering periodically to keep the compost moist. Once the foliage develops to about 10cm tall cover the plants completely with another layer of compost. When they grow through this do the same again and again until your bag/container is nearly full. This allows more growing room to
maximise the number of potatoes produced and keeps the light away from the developing tubers. Keep well-watered and feed with a Tomato liquid fertiliser. The foliage will yellow and die down in the late autumn and this can then be removed and composted. Finally, your new potatoes can then be left in their pots in the compost (if kept fairly dry) until needed at Christmas or before. Enjoy! ROUTINE If your garden is lush and you can’t walk down the path on a wet day for fear of a soaking then now is the last point in the year that you can still hack plants back as they will have time to recover and soften with a little foliage and maybe a few flowers. Most plants start to flop and slump come late August, like the lavender, pictured, but Dahlias should buck that trend and look perky. If yours are starting to lean, stake them now. Traditional bamboo canes will suffice; however, we stock a great range of attractive Poppy Forge staking products at the Garden Centre.

This year we are hosting the Bucks County Honey Show on the Sunday and there will be numerous classes for judging which you will be able to see. There will be a beekeeping information desk and samples of hive products as well as a couple of talks. If you want to learn about the process of keeping bees there will be plenty of bee-keepers to ask for advice and encouragement too! Members of The Mid-Shires Orchard Group will be demonstrating apple juice production as well as giving out information about the community orchard work that the group is actively involved in. We’ll keep our website and Facebook pages updated with the latest information from mid-August onwards. Email: inbusinessmags@gmail.com
