Welcome... JUNE 2021 ISSUE

Next issue JULY 2021 Copy Date 16th June At last, Summer is here and we can enjoy the delights of the season – fresh strawberries from the allotment, glorious sunny days for picnics and barbecues and wonderful flowers blooming in our parks and gardens. With the longest day falling on 21st of this month, I just love the lighter evenings – perfect for jogging, cycling or even a game of tennis after work – quite fitting with Wimbledon fortnight only a few weeks away at the end of June!

Later, the Buckingham Society was at the forefront of the campaign to have a bypass built to alleviate traffic problems and encourage new shops, houses and industry and the Society was among the first to recognise the importance of maintaining open spaces to help reduce the possibility of flooding and continues to oppose building on flood plains. Green and open spaces are vital and the Society maintains a close watch on housing developments to try to ensure that green space is included in all major developments. creating and updating a Design Statement for Buckingham, producing important design criteria in an attempt to ensure that new buildings reflect the distinctive character of our market town. More recently the Buckingham Society has been working closely with Buckingham Town Council to update the Buckingham Neighbourhood Development Plan. It is hoped that the BNDP will continue to provide some protection against inappropriate development. Despite the work of the Society and the Town Council Buckingham continues to face challenges with regard to developments. The strongly contested plans for 170 new houses in

Maids Moreton and a further 130 on the Moreton Road, all of which are contrary to the Neighbourhood Plan, will, if agreed, have a major effect on our town and we will continue to work with partner organisations to oppose them. However, like any similar organisation, the Buckingham Society can only exert influence if it has a strong membership. We need more members to remain strong so please, if you want Buckingham to remain a great place to live, think seriously about joining the Society. Cloudy2Clear, A Local Family Service With A Smile I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful Corona Virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community spirit and family. When talking to Trevor & Wendy Skidmore the owners of Cloudy2Clear Northampton & Oxford it became clear that these

values have been held for over 13 years. Since buying the local franchise in 2006 they have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community whilst introducing their 2 sons Lloyd & Ross into the family business along with Dan, Mark & Jo as demand for their service has grown.

W h a t s h o u l d I l o o k fo r i n a c o nveya n c e r ? Buying or selling a property can be a stressful process, but there are some easy steps you can take to help to make the conveyancing process as smooth and as calm as possible. Reputation and client satisfaction Take time to research your solicitor or conveyancer. Recommendations by professionals, friends or family are a good starting point. Visit the solicitor’s website and if they have client testimonials, have a read through. Some firms have profiles, photos and contact details of their conveyancers, so you can be reassured who you will be dealing with. Law firms may also be accredited with The Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS), providing evidence of a recognised quality standard. Transparent costs Like with most services, you will probably want to get 2 or 3 quotes for your conveyancing work. Make sure you are comparing like-for-like quotes, that you see a breakdown of the fees and that these are

transparent and fixed from the outset. Regular communication Property conveyancing is often dependent on a ‘chain’ and complications can arise that may hold the process up, so it is important your conveyancer keeps you informed of developments as they happen. When choosing your conveyancer, check how they will be communicating with you, for example, ask if they have direct dial and email, and can you check the progress of your matter online 24/7. If you would like to talk to Spratt Endicott Solicitor’s team of property experts in Buckingham about buying or selling a property, please contact Abigail Grantham, Head of Buckingham office on 01280 730705 or email agrantham@se-law.co.uk.

The Friends of Buckingham Library is an independent charity established in 2016 to support Buckingham Library. Membership is open to all residents and businesses in North Bucks. As an example of what the Friends do, we are about to purchase a number of books to be brought together under the general heading of “Modern Classics”. These will be simply brilliant books by great writers – such as Graham Greene, Iris Murdoch, John Le Carré, Pat Barker, Neil Gaiman, Khaled Hosseini, Stephen King and others. Also, the Friends will be purchasing some new spotlighting for the exhibition area which will, literally, brighten that space and bring exhibits more to life. A nd, on a more domestic level, the Friends will provide a dishwasher

to help make life easier for library staff when clearing up after coffee mornings and other library events. Libraries are a vital community resource and we are very fortunate to have a library which, in normal times, is vibrant and busy and welcoming to people of all ages and backgrounds. It will be great once we can return to post-Covid normality and local people can get back to using the library not just to borrow books but to use the computers; to read the newspapers; to do research; to take part in a knit and natter group or one of the many activities for children or any of the other myriad events that take place in Buckingham library. The main way of fund raising for the Friends is

through the membership scheme and, clearly, the more members we have, the more we can do for the library. So, please consider joining the Friends. Your annual membership fee will go towards our activities and purchases for the library. The annual membership rate is £10 for an adult, and £15 for a joint or family membership. You can join via the Friends’ website which is buckinghamlibraryfriends.org.uk Please become a Friend and help support your local library. Roger Edwards Chair of the Friends of Buckingham Library

Lets Spring into summer!...

It appears we’re all embracing gardening more than ever this year with many new gardeners joining the fold and wanting to learn more, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. After what has been one of the coldest and driest springs for decades, our thoughts turn to the warmer months of summer. A statistic which I spotted the other day really shows the impact of the last year in our gardens. In a recent poll 15% of 25–35year-olds had taken up gardening as a hobby since lockdown,

which is the same level as for 55-64 year olds. We have seen a much wider clientele at the Garden Centre these past months and this is very encouraging as so many people find solace in their gardens for both their physical and mental wellbeing. FLOWERS Allow the foliage of tulips to die back naturally and give them some fertiliser to help build up the bulbs for next year. Lilies that are in pots will be growing quickly at this stage of the season, with the flowers starting to develop, so with this in mind add a few canes or a support hoop to support the plant. Check your roses for mildew and aphids – a spray of RoseClear Ultra will keep the problems at bay. In the greenhouse, plant house or cold frame sow Polyanthus, Primroses and Pansies to be planted in autumn and to flower in spring. To brighten up winter and spring displays indoors, make sowings of Calceolaria, Cineraria and Primula obconica. Apply a general purpose pelleted fertiliser, such as Vitax Q4, prior to planting out summer bedding plants. CONTAINERS As the season is running a few weeks late due to the unseasonally cold weather, there’s still ample time to revamp or plant afresh your hanging baskets, windowboxes and pots. Remember the planting rules – have a mix of ‘thrillers’, ‘fillers’ and ‘spillers’ to give your containers a wow effect. Your ‘thriller centre’ plants could be, for example, Argyranthemums, bush Fuchsias, Bananas, Cordylines, Zonal or Regal Pelargoniums (Geraniums) or maybe some

Osteospermums. ‘Filler’ plants add colour, body and texture to your planters and good candidates for this role would be Begonias, Cineraria Silver Leaf, Petunias, Lantana, Verbena or Nemesia. These would be placed around the base of your ‘thriller’ plant. The ‘spillers’, as the name suggests, are plants that are set around the side of the container and trail over the sides to soften the appearance. Plants perfect for this include Trailing Geraniums, Trailing Fuchsias, Nepeta, Creeping Jenny, Bacopa and Million Bells and Surfinia Petunias. Remember when planting up a container to use a good quality peat-free compost and add some moisture control granules and slow-release fertiliser to help maximise the display for the summer.

PESKY PROBLEMS Keep an eye out for white powdery mildew on plants. If possible, remove the affected parts and spray with a fungicide such as Fungus Clear Ultra to prevent further outbreaks. Look for aphids - especially on the underside of leaves — and carefully rub them off by hand, or spray with an organic insecticide such as Vitax Plant Guard. This product works by creating a residual barrier to prevent spore germination and carefully removes bugs, spores and dust to prevent pests laying their eggs thus allowing maximum light for photosynthesis. The Plant Guard natural ingredients include micronized seaweed to stimulate plant growth. It is completely non-toxic and great for a bee friendly environment. Keep an eye out for scarlet lily beetles on your lilies — remove and crush any you see (see life cycle image). Also check for the sticky brown larvae on the underside of leaves - a tell-tale sign that they are around and are active. Make sure you have some Provado Ultimate Bug Killer insecticide to hand to help control the brightly coloured adult beetles. VEGETABLES Draw-up the soil around your potato plants to protect the foliage from late frost and to exclude the light from the developing tubers beneath the soil. Remember it does no harm to the plant if the soil covers the stem. Tubers near the surface 20

which are exposed to sunlight will turn green and be poisonous. Plant out Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, and Cauliflower for next winter’s harvest. Continue to sow short rows of fast-maturing salad vegetables such as Lettuce, Spring Onions and Radish. Continue thinning your vegetable seedlings to provide ample room for growth.

Now that we are in June, it should be safe to plant out tender crop such as Aubergines, Courgettes, Sweet Corn, Runner / French Beans, Marrows, Peppers, Pumpkins, Squash and Tomatoes. Choose a sunny location and make sure the soil is well worked with plenty of organic matter added which will suit these crops best. ROUTINE Check plants daily and water them if the soil is dry — especially newly planted hedges, fruit trees and shrubs that are still getting established. Tap the whole of your tomato plants to encourage good pollination; water every day and start feeding them weekly once fruits begin to develop. Although fruit trees will naturally shed some fruit (called the ‘June drop’), aim to thin out the fruit on congested branches further for bigger and better fruits. You can also apply some Sulphate of Potash fertiliser this month and again in July to encourage fruiting wood for next year. Protect your fruit from the birds with netting, especially wall trained Peaches, Nectarines, Apricots as well as Gooseberries and Currants. Use cloches to help protect developing

Strawberries and put straw around the plants to help deter slugs. Keep the Dutch hoe moving around your flower and veg beds to keep down weed growth. Have you listened to our DIG IT podcast?

Press Release from Buckinghamshire Council

Be a part of this year’s Great British Spring Clean!

Buckinghamshire Council is proud to once again pledge its support to Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean: the country’s biggest mass action environmental campaign taking place between 28 May – 13 June. The aim of the campaign is to inspire people to work in partnership with community organisations, businesses and councils to collect and safely dispose of litter from local streets, parks and open spaces. The Great British Spring Clean encourages local residents to organise a community litter picking event. In a bid to support

the campaign and any local litter picking events, Buckinghamshire Council will collect waste from litter picking activities from an agreed, designated point or residential address, if groups contact the council in advance. There are also litter pickers, bags, hoops, high vis vests and gloves which can be loaned free of charge to individuals and groups (subject to availability). Last year during the Great British September Clean, Buckinghamshire Council supported litter picking events organised by parish councils, community groups and environmental groups involving over 458 volunteers, who together spent 1,034 hours litter picking and collected more than 551 bags

of rubbish. To top it off, Buckinghamshire Council won the Great British September Clean Award at the Keep Britain Tidy Network Awards 2021. The National award was given to the council for its entry from the Southern Waste Team which focused on the clean-up efforts of residents in the south of the county. This year Buckinghamshire Council wants to be bigger and better and is calling on residents to join its award-winning team in standing up to litter for the Great British Spring Clean 2021! Here’s how you can get involved and show support for the Great British Spring Clean: Head over to Keep Britain Tidy to register your litter pick: www. keepbritaintidy.org/get-involved/ support-our-campaigns/greatbritish-spring-clean Whether you’re a group or an individual keen to take part, take a look at how Buckinghamshire Council can support your litter pick: www.buckinghamshire.gov. uk/events/great-british-springclean
