Cloudy2Clear, A Local Family Service With A Smile I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful Corona Virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community spirit and family. When talking to Trevor & Wendy Skidmore the owners of Cloudy2Clear Northampton & Oxford it became clear that these

values have been held for over 13 years. Since buying the local franchise in 2006 they have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community whilst introducing their 2 sons Lloyd & Ross into the family business along with Dan, Mark & Jo as demand for their service has grown.

H ave yo u u p d a t e d yo u r w i l l l a t e ly ? Good! You have set up a will to safeguard your loved ones, but even after you’ve signed your name, life events and circumstances will continue to change around you. As a rule of thumb, many solicitors advise that wills should be reviewed and updated every three to five years to remain relevant. When should I update my will? There have been changes to family members and relationships Births, deaths, marriages and divorces should trigger a need to update a will. Always ensure that the correct people are named on your most current will and people whom you no longer want to include in your will are taken off. Updating your will is especially important if you are remarrying as your previous will is automatically invalidated. You’ve bought a home or business Buying a home or business adds to your asset

portfolio, which is included in your estate upon your death. Having a will in place that states how these assets are to be distributed can help with effective tax planning. There have been changes to tax laws From time to time, new tax and probate laws are brought in by governing bodies. It is good practice to check if any of these new laws affect your estate and management thereof. Additionally, if you move to a new country, certain laws can impact differently. For more information about creating a will or updating an existing will, please contact Emma Rolfe, Solicitor at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01869 222315 or email erolfe@se-law.co.uk.

New walk-through coronavirus testing site for Aylesbury A new walk-through coronavirus testing site has been set up at Buckinghamshire Council’s Gateway building car park in Aylesbury – where it is planned to remain for the foreseeable future. This site is open for use by anyone who has coronavirus symptoms, and appointments must be booked first – it is not a ‘drop-in’ site. However, with cases rising, anyone with even mild symptoms is being encouraged to arrange a test to help stop the spread of the virus. Symptoms include a high temperature; a new, continuous cough; or a loss or change to

sense of smell or taste. Anyone with one or more of these symptoms should book a test at nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119. The site is accessible on foot and bicycle, and these are the recommended ways to get there. People using the site are encouraged not to drive there if at all possible. Anyone attending an appointment at the walk-through site will be given guidance on getting to and from the test site safely, with extra support for vulnerable groups and people with disabilities. Gareth Williams, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Community Engagement at Buckinghamshire Council, said: “This new walk-through testing site in Aylesbury is great news for us as we continue to work together to stop the spread of

coronavirus throughout the county. If you have any symptoms of coronavirus, no matter how mild, please do book a test. “We know cases are on the rise here, as they are in the rest of the country, so it is vital we remain as vigilant as possible to protect the people around us and keep the virus under control. So please follow the guidance – hands, face, space, and the ‘rule of six’ if you are meeting anyone. And, if you are contacted by NHS Test and Trace, please do follow the advice you are given – it will help to save lives.”

For more information about walk-through testing sites, you can watch this video https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=DcRw92b08xg&t=50s

Remember, remember……the Fifth of November…….but for all the right reasons!

Bonfire night is almost upon us, and with it the thought of mulled wine, toffee apples and sparklers! Here’s our quick guide to staying safe and having a great time: 1. Why not watch an organised display, rather than buying fireworks to let off in your garden – it’s cheaper, safer, and much more fun! 2. Keep pets safely indoors after dark, to prevent them being startled by nearby fireworks – keeping the TV or music on and using pet-calming diffusers can help if you have to leave them home alone 3. Kids absolutely love sparklers, but always supervise them, make sure they wear gloves and have a bucket of water or sand ready to put the sticks into once they’ve gone out 4. Check bonfire piles before lighting, to keep wildlife safe – better still, build the bonfire immediately before it’s going to be lit, to be certain there aren’t hedgehogs, toads or other creatures hiding in it

Festive Favourite Now it’s November, it’s safe to say that most of us are thinking ahead to Christmas – planning for presents, decorations and turkey – and quite possibly wondering how much it’s all going to cost! It’s so easy to overspend, when you’ve everyone to buy for, but with our top tips, you’ll save money, shop smarter and make sure your credit card feels much less battered in the New Year! 1. Don’t impulse buy! Choose an item and then shop around using price comparison sites, best deals websites and auction sites to see if you can get it cheaper. 2. Super savings – don’t forget to check for discount vouchers before buying

anything online! There are plenty of sites where members can post deals and discount codes for others to use – saving you as much as 20% on your shopping. 3. Click through cashback – some banks and credit cards let you opt in to get cashback at featured retailers, on other sites you sign up and then click through before buying. Either way, you’ll get anything upwards of 1% of your total spend back in a few weeks or months’ time, without any effort at all. 4. Presents don’t have to be new! Antique or vintage items are every bit as good, if they’re exactly what the

es – on a budget! recipient would like. Online auction sites, social media selling pages or local car boots, markets or craft fairs are great places to look for quirky and unique items at a great price. 5. Set a budget! If you’ve lots of people to buy for, it helps if you all agree on a budget. Shopping around for the perfect gift for under a tenner means that a lot more thought has to go into each present – making each gift that little bit more personal. 6. Super Secret Santa – the perfect solution to prevent overspending! Nobody needs a bin bag

full of presents on Christmas morning, so why not agree that everyone gets just one great gift, by drawing names at random? Set a higher budget than you’d usually allocate per person, but save a fortune because each of you just buys the one gift – saving time, money and potential waste into the bargain.

Keep on Gardening... Throughout the pandemic the Garden Centre trade has seen a sharp rise of individuals and families getting out into their gardens – many growing fruit and vegetables for the first time. This is great news as many of us have been connecting with nature, which has helped in our well-being and mental health, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day.

ROUTINE Raise up any pots or containers onto pot feet to help drainage and prevent any waterlogging. Once the leaves have dropped from your Japanese Maples (Acers) you can re-pot your plants then if they have outgrown their pot, pictured. It is essential to use ericaceous potting compost, which is low in lime, and to have good drainage at the base of the new pot. When you come to set the Acer in the new pot please ensure it is planted to the same depth as before. Your Acer will certainly benefit from being placed in a sheltered location throughout the winter months. Stake top-heavy brassicas and draw up some soil around the base of the stems to help to prevent the wind rocking the plant and causing damage to the roots. Apply Vitax Fruit Tree Grease or Solabiol Boltac Greasebands to the trunks of fruit trees to prevent wingless female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying their eggs in the branches. Cut back tall stems on roses by half to prevent any damage from wind rock. If the roses have been badly hit by black spot (pictured) and mildew remove all badly affected leaves from the plants immediately. These leaves are best destroyed by burning or put in your garden waste bin but don’t put them on the compost heap unless you can bury them in the warm area in the middle. Once the base of the plants is cleared you can then apply a generous mulch to the soil to help retain moisture. UNDERCOVER Clean greenhouse and cold frame glass to maximise light levels. Wash out seed trays and pots ready for spring sowing, and clean and stack flowerpots. Use a mild disinfectant or Agralan Citrox, a safe, odourless, powerful cleaner based on extracts of citrus fruit, effective against a wide range of bacterial and fungal diseases. To encourage early displays, bring some potted bulbs, including, pots of Crocus and Narcissi Paperwhite ‘Ziva’, under cover. Clear beds or growbags, water well and plant up with some winter crops such as Lettuce ‘All Year Round’ and salad leaves Mizuna,

Mustard and Spinach. Ventilate the greenhouse during fine weather to prevent a build-up of pests and diseases. PLANTING Plant bare-root and container-grown trees and hedging plants as soon as possible after they go dormant. The benefits of establishing new plants in the late autumn and early winter are twofold: - the soil is relatively warm, helped this year by the record-breaking temperatures we enjoyed back in the spring and in September, and there is sufficient moisture to help stimulate root development. However, with the dry weather we have had recently, it will be necessary to give the ground a good soaking unless we get some rain. Our rollercoaster weather patterns of this year really highlighted the importance of gardeners “working with the weather”. This can, of course, this can be tricky, but not impossible.

However, when it comes to establishing bare-root plants, which are in their natural state of dormancy, it makes perfect sense to try. If you have moved into a new home in recent months the chances are you’ve been busy getting the interior to your liking and the garden may well have taken a temporary back seat. In developing a new garden it’s all about establishing the long-term plants first, so plant ornamental and fruit trees, hedges, shrubs and climbers first. Timing wise, this is great news as trees and hedging plants are always best value when they are offered bare-root or ball-rooted rather than in containers. To help make the process of selecting new hedges, trees and fruit simpler refer to our l atest Autumn 2020 – Summer 2021 catalogue which is available at the Garden Centre or call our Mail-Order department on 01280 827925 to arrange for a copy to be posted to you. We have these potted, in the case of Japanese Maples and Liquidamber, but the rest will be shortly available as bare-root transplants or as young whips. If coloured bark is to your liking then the winter is the time where it comes into its own. Brightly coloured Willows and Dogwoods, pictured, can provide wonderful textural impact when they are planted en masse in bold groups of 3, 5 or 7 (never even numbers in gardening!) to provide an alluring focal point. If you want to add height then what about the beautiful silvery white bark of the Himalayan birch, Betula jacquemontii? This classic ornamental tree is a popular favourite with us at the Garden Centre as it provides perfect dappled shade and it is a useful vision diffuser where you

want to block out any unwanted overlooking neighbours or to block the view of an unsightly building! WINTER BIRD CARE Different species of birds eat different things. Sparrows and finches like seeds; tits like fat; and thrushes and robins like fruit and worms, but starlings will eat just about anything! In our Bird Care section, we have a great variety of various foods, bird feeders and bird accessories to keep our feathered friends happy throughout the cold months of winter. Birds need to drink and bathe every day - even when it’s really cold outside. A pond or bird bath is great, but even an upturned bin lid or plant saucer can give birds the water they need so aim to keep them free of ice throughout the chilly winter months. STILL TIME to sow overwintering Broad Beans, pictured, outside under cloches or in a polytunnel. Good varieties to consider include ‘Aquadulce’ is best or ‘The Sutton’ if you want a dwarf

variety– all available from Mr Fothergill’s seeds in the Shop. You can start off your beans in small pots or sow directly into their cropping locations. Don’t forget to net your brassica crops before the pigeons have a chance to invade and steal the crop. Plant Garlic now as over-winter chilling encourages bulb formation. The perfect soft neck garlic varieties for those that prefer a milder flavour include Garlic French ‘Germidour’, ‘Marco’, ‘Thermidrome’ and ‘Topadrome’. If you are looking for a stronger flavoured hard neck variety then Garlic ‘Lautrec

Wight’ would be the one to plant first. Plant each clove just below the surface of the soil about 2.5cm deep with the pointed end facing up. They should be spaced 10-15cm apart along the row. LAST CALL There’s still time to plant up your Tulip bulbs for flowering next spring. If you are planning to use tulips in pots using and if you are planning to layer your bulbs, then do consider using them in more than one layer. This method of planting is known as Lasagne planting. In a decent sized pot plant layers of bulbs in the reverse order that they flower. Start with the April/May flowering bulbs in the bottom of the pot, followed by March/April in the middle of the pot) and finally Feb/March towards the top of the pot. A good reliable sequence of bulbs from the bottom would be Tulips, Narcissi and then Crocus. You could also plant many of the dwarf later flowering Tulip varieties close to the top of the pot too! WEAR IT PURPLE FOR TRANSITIONS UK

Maxwell receive AVCT grant support This dedication, determination and outstanding performance of the swimmers of Maxwell Swim Club has been recognised by Aylesbury Vale Community Trust (AVCT). The trust, which supports local causes, encouraging the development of talented athletes has awarded training grants to nine of the club’s elite young swimmers. Elite Athlete Funding grants were given to Poppy Baybutt, Jake Chesworth, Rowan Cyster, Eliza Hudson, Gracie Hudson, Sam Pyefinch, Mathew Readhead, Charlie Toms and Imogen Walton. These swimmers were on the brink of going to British or Home Nations national championships this year only to be prevented by lockdown. Head coach, Noel Horton commented, “these are a mega bunch of kids, they train hard and show grit determination. They are a pleasure to coach and are totally deserving of this support.” Maxwell Swim Club has further reason to 22

thank AVCT for its support. Maxwell needs to raise nearly £9000 to replace the timing boards essential for competitions. AVCT has offered to support Maxwell in getting towards this goal by matching fund raising Maxwell achieves from other sources. The timing boards are essential for Maxwell to run competitions, which generate income that allows for the club to provide inclusive training for swimmers in the vale. Maxwell, however needs further support to get to their goal and would appreciate anyone interested in giving support or anyone interested in competitive swimming to get in touch via the club website, www.Maxwell swim club.org. .

Maxwell thanks AVCT for all their support.

Without the help of our amazing supporters, this would not have been possible. The work that we do as a charity is so imperative to our young people’s lives, especially in this time of uncertainty and isolation. We have had some amazing success stories throughout this time, including one of our young care leavers from the Attain project, continuing her volunteering work with Sofea, Fareshare in Milton Keynes. resulted in her being interviewed and offered a paid, full time role for the first time in her life. Amazing! Through working with a therapist the charity organised for her and through continuous contact and work with her mentor, this young person has achieved one of her main life goals. All of this has happened whilst dealing with her mental health and being isolated and away from her normal circle of people. This is what your involvement and support can help us and our young people to achieve. It’s something they and we are so proud of. We aim to maintain these strong relationships and support to enable our young people to continue on their road to success. So, what can you do to help? There are a number of ways you can help, either individually or through your business. Give us a call to discuss or check out info on our website. www.transitionsuk.org
