There’s so much talk in the news lately, about childhood obesity, poor nutrition and seemingly a new food-related health scare every week, so what should we be feeding our smallest children, to keep them happy and healthy? Despite the chaos of conflicting advice, the reality is pretty simple. Under fives have small tummies, so they need to eat little and often. Three yummylooking, healthy meals a day and a nutritious snack or two will provide everything they need to grow at the super-fast rate that little ones do, whilst giving them energy to play, learn and have fun. Make mealtimes a social occasion by eating alongside your child; talking about their day, demonstrating your enjoyment of a range of foods, and helping them learn to use cutlery with care and enjoy independent eating.
•
Fruits and vegetables are very important for all of us, and choosing a selection of colours each day will ensure your child’s 4
five – or seven – portions provide plenty of vitamins and micronutrients. Healthy is good, but don’t think low fat faddy diet when you’re feeding toddlers - they get important energy from healthy fats, and it’s far better for their calories to come from this source than from sugars. Full-fat milk until they’re five is a good rule, and cubes of cheese or little pots of yogurt are always popular.
•
•
Protein is also vital, to provide the fundamental ingredients needed for growing, and building bright brains and strong muscles.
•
Calcium and Vitamin D help little bones grow, so eating and drinking dairy products, fortified bread and breakfast cereals and spending time playing outside are essential for building healthy toddlers.
•
Cheese-topped baked beans on toast, chopped chicken breast on home made pizza with little chunks
of cucumber and tomato, or tuna and sweetcorn sandwiches are all good balanced lunches for little people, providing excellent sources of protein and are inexpensive to make.
• Drinks for little ones need to be
mainly milk or water, or very well-diluted squash or fruit juices – fizzy and sugary drinks will reduce their appetite for nutritious foods and cause tooth decay, so are best avoided or kept as a rare treat.

What are the Legal Differences between Cohabiting and being Married? The number of people getting married has reduced significantly over recent years with more people choosing to cohabit instead. But what are the legal differences?
Children “Parental Responsibility is defined as all the rights and duties that you would expect a parent to have in respect of a child, concerning where they live, which school they attend, etc. Whether parents are married or not may have an impact on who has parental responsibility for a child. Inheritance As a married couple, if one of you passes away without a Will, your spouse would normally inherit your estate. For an unmarried couple, your partner will not inherit your estate automatically. Therefore, it is important for each of you to record your wishes in a Will. Finances When a couple is married, which of them owns an asset may not be relevant; it is a matrimonial asset. This is not the case for unmarried couples.
12
If you are unmarried, then there is no presumption of sharing and in the event of separation neither person can necessarily bring claim against the other for a share of their personal finances.
Our advice Deciding whether to get married or not is always a personal decision and not a legal one, however it is important to be aware of the differences so you can make an informed decision.

Glamorous greys...
The appearance of a few grey hairs used to cause panic, plucking or a dash for the dye, but not any more! The very shade which caused such consternation is now glamorous and something to be proud of and it looks great!
The age at which we start to notice those few tell-tale silver hairs, often around the temples, can vary; but by our mid-forties, most of us have developed a little of the ‘salt & pepper’ look.

Glamorous
With the advance of celebrities ditching the dye and showing off their silver styles with pride, more of us feel happy to be ourselves, and perhaps change our style, but keep the colour. Nobody would deny that Richard Gere and Helen Mirren look completely fabulous, and so can you!
If you’re still not convinced, and feel that grey really isn’t your thing just now, there are the usual options of temporary and permanent hair dyes, to create a uniform shade and hide your ‘silver highlights’. Regular washing and root regrowth means that you will need a top-up or complete re-colour

every six weeks or so, depending on the
product. An alternative, which may be a little pricier initially, is to speak to your
hairdresser about going ‘gently grey’ and soften your natural highlights, by blending with highlighted and lowlighted colours, which can last about six months before a repeat is needed. The shades, amount and way in which the colours are applied can be varied to suit you, enabling some of your greys to stay, as an asset to your style. Whichever you choose – camouflage or coverage, silver or another shade – wear it with pride; choose a style to suit your face shape and hair type and enjoy looking fabulous!

Springtime dining
With the recent school holidays, lighter evenings and warmer weather, the barbecue has made an early appearance in my garden. Every time we cook alfresco, there are the usual burned-on-the-outside, raw-in-the-middle offerings, which has led me to compile a few top tips:
Get the BBQ out for a Spring clean, well before you want to use it; if it’s gas, fire it up, and give the whole thing a jolly good scrub - burn off any grotty bits from last year, and create a clean space to char things, 2016 style!
Buy a pair of long-handled BBQ tongs and a meat probe – possibly the best bits of kit you can invest in. Tongs prevent the burned fingers / dropped burger incidents, and a temperature probe will 22
ensure food is cooked through before you serve it to guests – the thickest part of burgers, chops and sausages must reach a minimum of 75°C; aim for 83°C for poultry.
Think about pre-cooking first – if you’re barbecuing chicken or thicker cuts of meat, why not cook it in the oven first, unless you have a gas BBQ with variable heat. Some meats can be dangerous if they’re done on the outside, but the middle is insufficiently cooked through, and you can still add that BBQ flavour with a few minutes on the barbie!
Avoid cross-contamination – keep raw meats and cooked food or salads separate, and wash hands (or use sanitising hand gels if that’s not possible) after handling raw meat
Be inventive with recipe ideas – foods which are more delicate can be barbecued if they’re wrapped in foil, so why not cook your fish and vegetables to perfection, outdoors.
Using common sense, good food hygiene and a meat probe in combination, ensures that nobody will get ill from eating barbecued food. These few simple checks become second nature, and mean that everyone will enjoy their meal and stay safe.

Compulsory Chipping – what it means for your dog
Many of us already have our pets microchipped, to ensure they can be returned to us if they stray or are stolen, but now it’s become compulsory for all dogs in England..
From 6th April, all dogs and puppies must be microchipped, and their details added to one of the approved databases, by the time they are 8 weeks old, or there will be large fines imposed for non-compliance.
The Government’s aim is to ensure responsible pet ownership, with all dogs easily identifiable, owners traceable when pets stray and instances of animal cruelty more easily prosecuted.
Puppies must be chipped and registered with their breeder’s details, before going to their 26
new homes, so that there will be full lifetime traceability for all dogs in England.
If your pet already has a microchip, but the registered details on the database may not be up to date - perhaps they’re in the name of the previous owner, or you’ve moved address recently – then this needs updating by 6th April.
If your dog doesn’t have a chip, and you are worried about the cost of this, then a number of animal charities are running schemes, chipping dogs free of charge for those on certain benefits.
If this doesn’t apply to your circumstances, then the cost of
After the 6th April a £500 fine can be issued chipping at your local vet’s is typically between £20 and £40, and this includes the paperwork necessary to register the chip number with your details and those of your pet, on one of the approved databases. If your dog is found to be without a microchip after 6th April, a notice will be issued, requiring a chip to be implanted and registered within 21 days; failure to comply will result in a £500 fine.

For Brackley Town 2015-16 has been a tough season. Performances have improved but the results have been slow to follow so the team has been mired at the wrong end of the Vanarama National League North that sees Solihull Moors out in front by a long way and
Photographer John Maund
David Moyo stepping up in the absence of top scorer Steve Diggin who has broken his arm. New signing Lee Ndlovu and Courtney Cameron have livened up the attack and at the back young keeper Sam Hornby has become a rock. Now above the relegation zone, Brackley really do have their destiny in their own hands and a final run-in of matches that could be harder. The final game is at home against Tamworth on Saturday 30 April kick off 3pm. We hope to be clear of relegation fears by then. But if survival rests on this result please try to get along to St James Park to support the team! Keep an eye on the club website for all the news and fixture details.

Gary Cooper's emotional journey to the London Marathon In 2003 I had a life changing accident at work which resulted in a spinal cord injury and permanent paralysis from the chest down. I spent the next 10 months in rehabilitation at Stoke Manadville Hospital before finally being able to go home and start to re-build my life. In 2007 my girlfriend and I (now my wife) started trying for a baby which took many years with my wife suffering a number of devastating misscarriages. In April 2013 we became the happiest parents in the world with the arrival of our son – Finlay who was born healthy and perfect. Life is very cruel though and he was taken from us just 28 hours later when he died during the night in hospital completely unexpectedly and without explanation. The coroner later ruled that he had died from Sudden Unexpected Neonatal Death which is a
form of Sudden Infant Death (SIDs or cot death). Our lives were once again shattered as we struggled to come to terms with his death, it is during this time that I decided that I wanted to do something positive in Finlay’s memory so decided to complete The London Marathon. As a wheelchair user entering the London Marathon is not as straight forward as it is for able bodied participants, I firstly had to learn how to use a racing wheelchair as you can’t complete it in a normal wheelchair. I then had to get a qualifying time in a half marathon before I would even be considered for entry! Training started off well
however I gained a wrist injury which meant I couldn’t train for 3 months and was followed by a broken leg in June 2014 while training which put a stop to everything again for 6 months. I am now back on track and ready to complete The London Marathon 2016 raising money for SANDs and The Lullaby Trust. SANDS (Still Birth And Neonatal Death Society) have supported us since Finlay’s death and The Lullaby Trust support families and research into SIDs. Both these charities are close to my heart. I am happy to say that in August 2015 my wife gave birth to a little girl called Daisy who is my biggest fan!
If you would like to know more about my story and
support me in my London Marathon attempt then please visit my charity page

GARDENING THIS MONTH... Written by Chris Swallow Swallows Nursery
Winter of record breaking rainfall At last the dry weather is here after the winter of record-breaking rainfall, and almost no snow and only a couple of brief spells of frost, unless you live in Scotland where there has been quite a lot of snowfall, some proper winter frost and plenty of cold but sunny days (Spot the envy!). At least the water table has been replenished and any new planting should now flourish.
Looking good!
So many to choose from this month, and I will kick off with a little cracker, the Lenten rose or Helleborus orientalis (see picture page 36). These hellebores are the most popular and

understandably so. The pretty and elegant flowers appear late winter and early spring, in shades of white to purple , often double and always with striking marking on the petals. The dark shiny green leaves can be removed at flowering, particularly if diseased, and the flowers will stand out even more. There are hundreds of hybrids to choose from but if you plant the species you will get a variety of colour and form. They are best grown in moist soil and under dappled shade. Chaenomeles or ‘Japonica’ are excellent wall shrubs,

fragrant blossoms in pink or white, and many have good autumn colour. Perhaps the most stunning are those varieties with spreading habits and stunning displays of white flowers, such as ‘Shirotae’ and ‘Shirofugen’. If planting these forms, do allow them plenty of width to develop their shape. A great all-rounder with more of a classic tree shape is Fragrant Cloud. This variety has unusually fragrant flowers and these make a stunning display of double white blooms fading to subtle pink tinges. Sumptuous!
There is still time to get planting schemes underway, even trees, shrubs and climbers. In dry spells water any new plantings every few days. It is better to water sufficiently to thoroughly soak the soil, rather than just the surface. Many grey-leaved or Mediterranean-type evergreen shrubs such as Lavenders, Rosemary, Sage, Cotton Lavender, can be trimmed by a few inches to keep them tidy and encourage bushiness. It is safer to do this now, when potentially damaging severe frosts are past, or at least, let’s hope so!

Kitchen Garden
There are many exciting crops to sow this month in the kitchen garden. Leeks can be started on a spare piece of ground, then transplanted at 10cm high into deep holes. Successional sowing will work with many vegetables such as lettuce, radishes, beetroot, peas, broad beans, onions and turnips. Sow some of the seed every couple of weeks to give you more continuity when it comes to harvesting. Maincrop potatoes should be planted early April. Make trenches 60cm apart, and add well rotted manure if the soil hasn’t already been fed well. Place the tubers ‘eyes up’ around 40cm apart, and cover with soil, slightly mounded. Early potatoes should now be ‘earthed up’ to increase the yield and to make sure any new potatoes are not exposed to light which will turn them green and poisonous! APRIL What’s On 8th Brackley Wine Festival The 8th Brackley Wine Festival will provide the opportunity to taste and buy wine from a huge world-wide range and also support local charities. Plans are being finalised for the festival being held at Brackley Town Hall on Saturday 30 April between 12.00 noon and 6.00pm. Stallholders will include Members of the Association of Small Direct Wine Merchants and local independent suppliers. The festival gives the opportunity to taste new wines, guided by experts, where quality and flavour take precedence over brands and mass production.
The festival is organised by Brackley Rotary Club.
The event organiser, Rotarian Trevor Davies, said, “The festival is a tasting opportunity for wine
lovers to discover and buy new wines without the risk of the wine not being to their palate.” “Proceeds from the entrance fee of £5 will benefit Rotary charities. Further information can be found on the festival website:
