Why make a Lasting Power of Attorney? At any stage of your life, you or your partner may be unfortunate enough to have an illness or accident that may affect your mental capacity to make decisions. These decisions may be about your financial affairs or your medical treatment. If you are no longer able to decide for yourself, have you put plans in place to appoint someone who can?

All of these issues can be resolved by making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). There are two types of LPA – one for finances and one for health. You can make one or both, appoint different Attorneys under each LPA and express ‘preferences’ and ‘instructions’ to outline how you envisage the arrangement working. Most people would prefer not to think about the circumstances in which LPAs are used, but a terrible situation can be much worse if no one is able to access funds or if your loved ones do not have the legal authority to carry out the medical wishes you have expressed to them.

Spratt Endicott is recognised by The Legal 500 UK (A clients’ guide to the capabilities of law firms) as the leading firm in North Oxfordshire in terms of its expertise and experience in the areas of powers of attorney, trusts, estate planning, wills and probate. We deliver these services at competitive prices and can often agree a fixed fee with you at the outset of the matter.

For further information, contact Julia Routen, Solicitor at Spratt Endicott, on 01295 204012 or email jrouten@se-law.co.uk.

Beautiful Butterflies

You know that Spring is really here when you see the first butterfly on a sunny day…… but which varieties can we expect to spot in the garden this month?

In our part of the UK, we can expect to see butterflies a few weeks earlier than more northerly parts – it’s all down to the rise in temperature, and we get warmer first!

My favourites – the glorious Peacock and both Large and Small Tortoiseshells, are all out and about this month, along with – amongst others the Red Admiral, Large and Small White, Speckled Wood and Holly Blue. You can

14

expect to see them on bright Spring flowers or catkins, which provide an important source of food after their long winter in hibernation.

Not all butterflies hibernate as adults – some will overwinter as a chrysalis, and emerge as a new butterfly when the sun’s warmth tells them that Spring is here. Until the temperature rises and there are flowers in bloom to feed them, it’s best for them to stay dormant, using very little energy to stay alive.

So, what can we do to attract butterflies and enjoy seeing them in the garden, through Spring and Summer? They need flowers in bloom throughout the season, from fruit tree blossom to buddleia, along with food plants for their caterpillars. A wildflower

Speckled Wood

meadow area will provide the perfect habitat, and will also attract other wildlife to your garden. Stinging nettles, whilst a nuisance for gardeners, are a great place for many types of butterfly, such as the Peacock and Red Admiral, to lay their eggs and caterpillars to feed.

So, plant more flowers, use fewer garden chemicals and leave an area overgrown and a few weeds to thrive – just my kind of gardening, and helps butterflies to flourish – sounds like an excellent plan to me!

Brackley Town’s remar

Brackley Town's remarkable season continues and appears to be heading for another nail-biting denouement, something to which Saints fans have become accustomed. However, whereas in the last two seasons Brackley have held out for survival on the very last day of the season, this time around they are competing for a play-off place at the top of the table. Reaching the 2nd round of the FA Cup and then the quarter-final stage of the FA Trophy has not been enough for Kevin Wilkin's side who go into the final round of matches in the National League North with eyes fixed only on a top five finish. With rearranged fixtures stacking up Brackley have been playing midweek catch-up for weeks but the gruelling schedule has yet to affect performances as a fine run of results, including a 6-0 away win at AFC Telford, has propelled Saints into contention.

Shaveril – banning the b

So, you’ve heard of Movember, when the cleanshaven suddenly look a little, well, different – and we sponsor their ‘taches for charity? Well, Shaveril is in one way the opposite, with the facial fuzziness coming off - but for an equally good cause! Gather your bearded family, friends and colleagues, and encourage them to sign up this month – because it’s all in aid of Mind, the mental health charity, and will raise money for this very good cause, whilst also allowing men everywhere to free their face from fuzz in time for Spring!

So, why link a mental health charity with beard shaving? Tragically, suicide is the leading cause of death in men under the age of 45, with this group also being those least likely to seek help for mental health issues. Just think for a moment – the main reason that men under 45 will die, is by taking their own life. By joining in with Shaveril, you’ll be raising all-important funds for Mind, helping them to address this issue by providing accessible support for those who need it.

18

beard for a great cause!

So, what’s the next step? Go to their website https://www.shaveril.org and follow the instructions to set up your Justgiving page, and invite your friends and family to donate to help you reach your goal. Once it’s reached – it’s bye-bye beard time! Post before and after pics on social media, and make sure you let everyone know how much you raised for Mind – spread the word, get your friends to join in, too!

Celebrate in April – there’

This month starts well, with a little light-heartedness – nobody can forget April Fools’ Day, when pranks abound until 12 noon on the first of the month! National newspapers do their best to persuade us that the most unlikely events have indeed happened, with flying penguins and spaghetti trees all over the news! The old rule that after noon, you’re the fool, still applies – thankfully limiting pranks to the morning, so we can relax a little after lunch. It’s all good fun, and certainly lightens the mood a little. A fortnight later, the mood is rather more sombre, with the Christian celebration of Easter – 14th is Good Friday, when Jesus was crucified, with Easter Sunday on 16th, when he rose from the dead to save all those who believe. Whether that’s your religion or not, we can all look forward to two Bank Holidays, so a very welcome break from the workplace, with several point-to-points held around the area and

’s something for everyone! plenty of other fun to be enjoyed over the long weekend.

On 23rd of the month, the celebrations are shared between the patron saint of England, St George, and the anniversary of the birth – and death – of William Shakespeare. It’s important to recognise both, as key parts of our national identity, so quite fitting that their day is shared. In Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare lived and died, there is the annual Birthday procession through the town, recognising the contribution made by this great man. In England, the flag of St George will be flown proudly, Jerusalem will be sung in churches around the country on the closest Sunday, and groups are campaigning for this day to become a national holiday again, as is the case with national saints’ days in other parts of the UK.

Chocolate Mousse with Puff Pastry Hearts Ingredients

“This sophisticated dessert is great for a dinner party”

3 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces 2 large eggs, separated, plus 1 beaten egg for brushing 6 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon sugar 2 tablespoons cognac or brandy 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Pinch of salt 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (half of a 17-ounce box), thawed Whipped cream, for topping METHOD

• Combine the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of barely simmering water. Stir until just melted, about 6 minutes; remove from the heat and whisk until smooth and shiny.

• Fill a large bowl halfway with ice water. Combine 2 egg yolks, 6 tablespoons sugar, the cognac, vanilla and 2 tablespoons hot water in a separate heatproof bowl. Beat with a mixer until thick and pale yellow, about 7 minutes. Place the bowl over the pan of simmering water and continue beating until warm and tripled in volume, about 8 more minutes. Carefully rest the bowl in the ice water and beat until the mixture is cool and thick, about 2 more minutes. Gradually beat in the melted chocolate mixture until incorporated.

• Wash and dry the beaters. In a separate large bowl, beat 2 egg whites, the remaining 1 teaspoon sugar and the salt until stiff peaks form, about 2 minutes. Stir one-quarter of the egg white mixture into the chocolate mixture, then gently fold in the rest until incorporated. Transfer to four 8-ounce ramekins. Cover and refrigerate until set, at least 4 hours or overnight.

• Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a 1 1/2-inch cookie cutter or small knife, cut out 4 hearts (or circles) from the pastry. Brush with the beaten egg, transfer to the prepared baking sheet and freeze until firm, about 5 minutes. Bake until puffed and golden, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool completely. Top each ramekin with whipped cream and a puff pastry heart. 24

Don’t be tempted to over-feed your lawn, as you will just end up cutting more frequently. Once the longer, lush growth is removed (not too low), try ‘mulch-mowing’ as often as possible. This returns nutrient to the grass and can help to retain moisture in the soil. It doesn’t add to the ‘thatch’, contrary to rumours!

On the Border

Assuming you don’t have a perennial weed problem, adding a layer of organic matter (known as mulching) will hugely benefit the shrub and herbaceous beds. Any

bare soil that is not ‘naturally’ shaded by the plant’s own foliage will rapidy dry and crack in the sun, losing moisture from lower layers in the process. Garden compost, leaf mould or pre-packed products such as composted bark are all ideal. For larger volumes, spent mushroom compost or well rotted manure are more economic alternatives.

Kitchen garden

Many crops to kick off this month. Sow vegetables such as lettuce, radish, beetroot, broad beans, onions and turnips to name but a few. Try some of the seed every couple of weeks to extend the cropping. Tomatoes should be sown in small pots or large plugs, and transplanted into final position (or

'grobags') when established. Training and pinching will be needed regularly! Outdoor crops seem very prone to blight so grow under glass ideally. Leeks can be sown on some spare soil and when 4 inches high can be planted into deep holes and thoroughly watered in.

Happy gardening!
