Welcome...

to the Summer edition of the Life in Buckingham magazine, ...August and September may share our bumper double issue of the magazine, but
for children everywhere, they couldn’t be more different! The freedom to run and play, sleep late in the mornings, stay at friends’ or grandparents’ houses, go on picnics, camping trips, days at the seaside; unhindered by school bells and rules…….and then the harsh reality of the new term, new friends, itchy new uniforms. With summer holidays finally here, exam results still a nail-biting few weeks away and exciting new challenges facing school and college leavers, I have a bright new challenge of my own, and a rather shiny object on a certain finger of my left hand… …..! To have someone warm, funny and caring in your life is a unique joy that we can all cherish, and if that man can dance – all the better! If you’re making it official with someone special, lots of love and luck to you both, as you embark on your new and exciting chapter. Until next time………

If you’re driving a clapped-out old wreck, or there are more miles on the clock than you’d like for the daily commute, August is the time to buy – so many offers are available now on unsold 17 plate cars, before the new registration is released on 1st September. New-to- you cars are also in abundance, in the next few weeks, as owners look to sell before taking delivery of a new vehicle, or trade-in through dealers. Here are a few top tips for getting the best deal on a new, or new-to- you, car: • Check the VED (road tax) band your chosen car is in – these have changed for cars registered after 1st April 2017, and can make a big difference to the costs involved in that first year on the road – after which it’s a flat rate of £140 for cars costing less than £40,000 new • Decide on the factors that are most important for your driving experience, in a new vehicle – and be openminded about the make and model, in order to save when buying new-to- you • Shop around, and always ask the dealer for their best price, and then keep haggling! Never accept the first deal you’re offered, and be prepared to travel to view cars further afield, particularly if you’re looking to buy a used vehicle • Towards the end of August, there are hot deals around on new cars, with dealers wanting to clear ‘old stock’ before the new registration is released, and so you’ve

even more haggling power at this time • Look carefully at the small print if you’re buying on finance, to avoid any nasty shocks. Make sure you can afford the repayments, and that the interest rate charged isn’t ridiculously high – there are even 0% finance options available, in some cases • Car insurance premiums are constantly on the rise, so double-check the cost to insure the car you’re after, before deciding that’s the one for you – choosing those with any modifications or higherpowered engines, or even vehicle types most targeted by thieves, will increase premiums dramatically – particularly for younger drivers and those with points or previous claims

Brackley Town put on an impressive performance National League North side Brackley Town are in the middle of pre-season preparations ahead of the opening fixture of the new season on 5 August. After League One Northampton Town, Saints are the county's No.2 football team. Having fallen one point short of a promotion playoff place last season, manager Kevin Wilkin has retained the core of his team and brought in four strong additions in the shape of new goalkeeper Danny Lewis, defender Connor Franklin, midfielder Jack Byrne and striker Andy Brown. All four were at National League side Solihull Moors last season so Wilkin has managed a coup in bringing such quality players to St James Park.
6
Pre-season fixtures began with the visit of League One Shrewsbury Town. Brackley put on an impressive performance in front of a home crowd of 328 to win out 2-1. In friendly games it is rarely the score-line that matters but fitness and bringing together a new team... on all
counts though Wilkin could count himself satisfied with the first match. Five further fixtures are lined up before FC United of Manchester arrive at St James park on Saturday 5th August. And that is when it kicks off for real.. Follow your local team. Support brackley Town - the Saints! See the club website for details of all the games and social events.

5 tips to reduce the cost of divorce The overall costs associated with divorce differ for every case, but it is in dealing with finances that most costs are accrued. It is therefore essential for anyone considering divorce to consider ways in which they can keep their costs to a minimum.
1. Try to reach agreement on as many issues as possible with your spouse. The less there is to dispute, the less your family lawyer will have to do. Options such as Mediation, Collaborative Law and Arbitration can help avoid Court and narrow the issues.
2. Keep your paperwork organised. Obtaining property valuations and a Cash Equivalent Value for your pension at an early stage can save considerable time and ongoing costs.
3. Contact your lawyer only when you need to. In most cases, costs increase because clients, quite reasonably, get in touch with their lawyer for updates. Family lawyers will usually set out the procedure involved at each step and seek instructions in correspondence.

4. Be cautious of fixed fee packages. Read the small print – what does the fee cover and, more importantly, what does it not cover?
5. Don’t get caught up in tit-for-tat correspondence with your former spouse. All of Spratt Endicott’s family lawyers are proud members of Resolution and do their best to avoid creating animosity, which not only increases costs, but also makes matters acrimonious.
For more information about any of the issues raised in this article please contact Sandeep Sandhu, Associate at Spratt Endicott on 01295 204154 or email ssandhu@se-law.co.uk.

Back to School – top tip starting in Reception! When you’re just four years old, starting off in the big world of school, conquering the playground, lining up when the bell goes and remembering not to call your teacher ‘Mum’seems just a little bit daunting…..but with a bit of preparation, it will all be plain sailing. Most pre-schools and nursery classes do a phased start into school, over the previous term - with visits and then whole mornings, playing with the other kids in Reception. Story time, snacks and maybe some painting – enjoyable activities to help little ones make friends, settle in and feel comfortable in their new surroundings. September comes around all too quickly, with the obligatory photos in smart new uniforms and then off to class after a long Summer playing and relaxing without much of a routine – but the wrench is worse for parents than their little ones, who adapt quickly, enjoy their action-packed days and sleep well as a result! If your child struggles with changes, or is moving to a new school where they don’t know other kids, here are a few tips to help the transition go smoothly: - Talk about what’s going to happen, well in advance. Discuss the routine – what time you’ll get up in the morning, what they’d like to choose for their packed lunches, which route you’ll walk or drive to school.

ps for
- Make friends ahead of time – there will be plenty of new starters from your neighbourhood, so if you’ve recently moved to the area, try posting on social media in a mother and toddler group for your town, or asking at a playscheme or sports activity group for little ones, to see if there may be classmates that your child could have playdates with, before starting school. - Don’t be surprised if there are tears – it’s not always a bad thing! Tiny children who are super-excited about a new school, may become tearful after a day or so, if things aren’t quite as amazing as they expected. Conversely, kids who worried and cried and didn’t want to let Mum leave them on the first day, may well be bouncing around and full of beans by the end of a week. They all adapt, learn to socialise with people who are fun to be around, and after a few weeks it’s like they’ve always been at school.

to do your bit!
H e a l t h &B e a u t y
Cancer Research UK is fighting to find a cure for cancer, which is such vital work, with over 365,000 people newly diagnosed with this dreadful disease each year in the UK. Survival rates vary by type, but with ongoing advances in treatments, the statistics continue to improve; 50% of people who are diagnosed now survive 10 years or more – double the number 40 years ago. We will all know someone affected by cancer, so it makes sense to do our bit to help with fundraising to find a cure, and the Shine Night Walk is just one way to show your support this September. With squash participation now on the increase in the county, a Junior Festival of the sport took place at Daventry Squash Club on Saturday 24th. June. With most of the county’s squash clubs taking part it turned out to be a tremendous day of sport and fun for both the junior players and their parents. Brackley were pleased to send a large contingent from their junior section to meet and play against their peers – there were about 60 participants overall. Mike Broadbent, coach at Lings Club Northampton, organised the event as part of his quest to revitalise squash in the county and, based on this evidence he’s getting things right. Cooperating with other clubs and coaches, including Brackley’s Martin Hall, a strong playing pool of junior talent is being developed to provide a good foundation for the future. Martin Hall commented – “All the children and parents did us proud. The children competed with a really good spirit. On the court we had some successes with Sofia Brown just edging out Ellie

thants Squash Festival at Daventry Horwood in the final of the D category. Emma Hall won her group and William Foulkes got to the semis in the C category. The juniors can look forward to some Grand Prix events against other clubs next season with some of them going on to County coaching”. Meanwhile, Brackley’s senior teams have been competing in their respective county Summer Leagues. The first team is top of Division 4 in the Oxfordshire Leagues winning six out of six so far. The second team has just started in Division 2 of the Northants Leagues and are enjoying playing in their home county. The season is drawing to a great conclusion with the club championship and handicap competitions under way with some talented new players having recently joined. The finals will be held on 28th September with the Presentation and Social evening taking place at Winchester House School on Saturday 14th October.

GARDENING THIS MONTH
Chris Swallow, Swallow Nursery
Summer this year just seems to go on, with only the occasional wet spell. Can it continue through August? Possibly, but that would put our classic Indian summer in jeopardy. Jobs in the garden Dead-heading and pruning continue in the ‘ornamental’ garden. Lavender, when it has finished flowering, is a prime case for trimming over as this encourages bushy growth, and delays the tendency to lax, open plants as they age. A second trim at the end of winter will help in this respect. Many types of hedge are best pruned this month. The slight regrowth made by the autumn will make for a neat effect through the winter months, before new growth starts in the spring. In the kitchen garden, strawberry plants can be tidied, cutting back old growth. If more than three years old, consider replanting with healthy new ones. If you have a glut of beans, whether French, runner or broad beans, don’t forget how well they freeze for later use. Other jobs are numerous, but worth mentioning are: lifting and drying onions, and cutting and drying herbs for winter use. Looking Good With the current butterfly survey, the obvious choice is the butterfly bush or Buddleia. Good for dry soils, best pruned hard at the end of the winter, they will grow to six feet and more. The arching racemes of flowers are irresistible to butterflies and other nectar seekers Crocosmias (‘Montbretia’) are excellent perennials for adding late summer intensity to a colour scheme
(see pic top right.). Their upright growth produces arching flowers of vibrant colour from canary yellow to brilliant flame red. They are shade tolerant and will take dry soils. Good drainage is essential for the corms to over-winter successfully. Penstemons are ever popular perennials which will give colour in late summer. Many varieties are available and their pitcher shaped foxglove flowers (see pic) (clothing the upright stems) come in many combinations of whites, pinks, reds and purple. Best planted in a warm well drained spot to help with overwintering.
HAPPY GARDENING!
