Outnumbered? How to stay sane! Is family life getting too exhausting, wintry weather meaning that the kids are spending more time indoors and you’re yearning for someone to wave a magic wand and make your tiny horrors into perfect little poppets? Here are a few ideas to make things run a little more smoothly. Those parenting bibles say that ‘Consistency, routine and clearly defined boundaries are key’, but how does that work in practise?
1. Create a basic timetable for your daily routine and simple house rules, agree these with other caregivers, then explain them to
the kids, making the consequences of non-compliance clear. All adults must agree to insist on the same rules, in the same way, or it simply won’t work.
2. Using time out (for an ageappropriate time, in a boring part of the home where they can still
be supervised from a distance) and confiscation (of toys, TV or internet time) works as a reminder that a child has done wrong, but kids must always be given a warning and a chance to ‘do the
right thing’ before being sanctioned. 3. There must also be clear rewards for a child choosing to behave well - earning points towards a prize, perhaps - but don’t make them monetary or food treats. Your time and attention, a trip to the park and a game of football – all are great motivators for good behaviour. 4. Although it’s tough, try not to reward repeatedly annoying or

suggests to your child that they’ll get attention for the wrong reasons. Try to ignore little things if you can, making sure that the moment your child starts to behave well, you praise them for making a good choice.

5. Make sure you treat all the children in your household the same – different ages may need their own little variations on the rules, but the basics are the same – and enjoy the rewards of your efforts; when the kids are comfortable with the rules, they have freedom to enjoy just being a kid, without feeling the need to test boundaries.

HOW CAN I GAIN ACCESS TO NEIGHBOURING LAND TO CARRY OUT DEVELOPMENT WORKS? It is rare that a building project does not require access, at some stage, to neighbour’s land in order to complete development works. Access may be required to enable: • Scaffolding to be erected; • Access to be gained to parts of the development site; • Footings or foundations to be dug for new buildings.
It is therefore important for any developer to identify whether access to neighbouring land will be required during the project, how long that access will be required and the extent of the access that will be needed. Assuming that the developer has no interest in acquiring the neighbouring land, there are basically three options which can be followed. Firstly, where works will interfere with or create party walls or structures on or near to the boundary between the adjoining properties, a Party Wall surveyor can be appointed under the Party Wall etc Act 1996 (“the 1996 Act”) to determine a party wall award which will detail the terms upon which access will be granted.
Secondly, where the 1996 Act does not apply, the Access to Neighbouring Land Act 1992 permits landowners to apply to the Court for an “access order” where the neighbouring landowner has refused access and the works are reasonably required for the preservation of the landowner’s property. Thirdly, where neither of the above applies, the developer can agree with the neighbouring landowner the terms upon which access to their land will be granted.
For further information on this or any other legal issues relating to property and land, please contact Kyle Wyness, Associate at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01295 204135 or by email at kwyness@se-law.co.uk.

Christmas crafts for little ones
The best part of Christmas, for me, is the togetherness – time we can share as a family, baking and making and preparing for the special day. • Paper chains – one of the simplest ideas, very popular in the first half of the 20 th century, so you’ll be reviving a true classic. Wallpaper offcuts, sugar paper from craft shops, even neon shades of A4 drawing paper – the only requirement is that they’re all cut to the same size. A child-safe guillotine (available inexpensively from craft shops) is a great idea – then the kids can help with this bit, too. Cut the strips to about 2cm wide and 15cm long – this will make a chain of fairly small loops, which are less likely to rip when you go to hang them up. Stick the ends of each loop, overlapping slightly, with tape and then link the next strip through and stick the ends, to form a chain as long as you wish. • Snowflakes – cut circles out of any white paper (draw around plates of different sizes to get the shapes) and then fold each circle as many times as possible – into half, then quarters, and so on. Cut notches and nicks into all the edges of each folded paper cone shape, then once you’re done, open it out to see a beautifully perforated snowflake. Decorate with silver glitter and hang from fine thread. • Salt dough decorations – mix together 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of salt, a tablespoon of sunflower oil and enough warm water to mix to a soft dough. Knead it until it’s workable, then roll out to about 1cm thick and use Christmas cookie cutters to make trees, bells, angels or anything you fancy! Take a drinking straw and poke a hole through, near to the top of each shape, to enable them to be hung up once they’re baked. Pop the shapes on a baking tray in a very low oven for a few hours, until all the shapes are pale and hard on both sides – then they’re ready to decorate!

Brackley Town players celebra the FA Cup at League One
Remarkable first phase
Brackley Town have enjoyed a remarkable first phase of the season putting last season's relegation woes firmly behind them to challenge the teams at the top and putting together a stunning run in the Emirates FA Cup. Saints also cruised through to the semi-finals of the Hillier Senior Cup where they will play Kettering Town in the New Year.

ate a goal in e Gillingham
Manager Kevin Wilkin was named Vanarama manager of the Month in October, a significant acknowledgement of his team's achievements. Brackley entered late November as the only side unbeaten in away fixtures to date and this strong performance on the road brought fine wins at the likes of Boston United, Stockport County and FC Halifax Town.
The club continued to develop its junior teams and community programmes alongside a varied social programme of entertainment and activities including a Sportsmen's Dinner which was a sell-out as ex-Newcastle United player John Beresford spoke supported on the evening by a comedian. Going into the New Year the club is in a strong position to continue to grow and develop as one of Northamptonshire's top sports clubs, in footballing terms second only to Northampton Town, The Cobblers.

After all the festivities, celebrations, five course dinners and alcoholic overindulgence, January reality arrives. It’s the peak time for new gym memberships, guilt-fuelled jogging and stocking up on those diet shakes – but it needn’t be this way. There’s no need to spend extra on your New Year detox, all it takes is a little planning ahead. We have five simple steps to feeling great, and they’re no quick fix, more a gentle lifestyle change that will leave you feeling full of energy and bursting with good health.
1.1. Stop stressing! Prioritise, plan and put off. There’s a saying – ‘if you want a job done, ask a busy person’ – and if you’re the one in your office who ends up with an overflowing in-tray, despite working non-stop, maybe now is the time to start saying No!’ Make time for those who matter, and you are one of them – relaxing bubble baths, walks in the countryside with your

g Great loved ones, just cuddling up on the sofa to watch a film – it’s all beneficial for recharging your batteries.
2.2. Sleep well – sounds simple enough, but it’s one of the hardest to
accomplish. Wind down to bedtime with a relaxing routine, don’t watch TV or catch up on emails whilst you’re in bed; make your bedroom a haven of calm and you’ll sleep more soundly.
3.3. Drink water, eat better – staying hydrated and eating simple foods will do you the most good. Fruits and vegetables, lean meat and fish, nuts, beans, dairy and wholegrain foods – all the things your granny ate, are the secret to maintaining your body in good condition. Processed foods can be convenient and quick to cook, but many contain chemical ingredients which make the food stay fresh, look and taste better, but don’t help your body one little bit. It can be just as quick to cook a meal from fresh or frozen ingredients, which will not only provide all the nutrients your body needs, but taste delicious! 4.4. Get a little exercise – there’s no need to go mad, just add more movement to your daily routine. Walk a little further – aim for
10,000 steps each day – or why not get together with friends and take up a new sport? It’s a great social occasion, an opportunity to catch up and chat, and benefits your body, too.
5.5. Bin those bad habits – if you’re a smoker, now’s the time to stop. You know there’s a good chance it will shorten your life, so think about those you care about, and quit for their benefit, if not your own. Have a few nights a week without alcohol, to let your system recover, and stay away from energy drinks and too much strong coffee, both of which dehydrate you and can lead to headaches and palpitations. It will take a month or more to see results, but persevere – you’ll feel better in the long run, and it won’t have cost you a penny – and it may well save you much, much more!

One month to the day after Christmas, proud Scots around the world are partying again – to celebrate the birthday of their greatest ever poet, Robbie Burns. Burns’ night means one thing to me – that Marmite of all dishes – Haggis! If you’re not sure what this dish contains, I’d recommend not asking – just have a taste, and then decide! Many varieties are available, including a vegetarian one, and that unique texture and mixture of spices is definitely worth a try. More controversially, is the question of what to serve with your haggis – ‘Neeps and Tatties’ being the recommendation – but what this comprises is a topic for heated debate!
24
ALL TYPES OF
The ‘Tatties’ part is straightforward – par-boil and then roast your potatoes, break them down a little and season, to create a lovely flavoursome, buttery dish. The ‘Neeps’ part is a little trickier! If you’re Scots, or from the North of England, you’ll call this a turnip. If you’re Southernbred, we’re talking about a swede. Either way, it’s the orange-fleshed, purple-skinned one, and you’ll need to peel and chop and boil it, then mash with plenty of black pepper and butter. Whether you mix your Neeps with your Tatties or not, is down to personal choice – but enjoy, and raise a glass (of whisky, what else?) to Robbie Burns, Scotland’s finest poet!

Pets Corner Animals around us – Time to Hibernate!
As the days grow shorter, the weather becomes chillier and it’s harder than ever to muster the urge to get up at an unearthly hour each morning, I must admit I’ve often contemplated hibernating! I’m sure that hanging out for a few months, not straying far from my cosy bed, would be a much nicer solution to getting through the harshest time of year. For some animals in the UK, hibernation is a reality; dormice, bats and hedgehogs all fatten up for winter and then sleep somewhere warm and undisturbed, until the days start to lengthen and the temperature rises. Hedgehogs are the creatures we
can help the most, because if they born late in the season or simply aren’t able to gain enough weight, they’ll try to keep feeding, otherwise they would die during hibernation due to lack of stored reserves within their body. If you
see a hedgehog out and about in daylight, or at any time during the winter, it will need help. If it’s not
obviously injured, a cardboard box lined with newspaper, with a plastic bottle filled with warm water – to act as a mini radiator – will make a good home. Keep it in a warm, quiet room, away from dogs. Tinned cat food is the best thing to feed them, along with a dish of fresh water, and then call a local wildlife charity for advice on what’s best. Hedgehogs which are too small to survive hibernation – under 600 grams - will need to be kept much warmer, to keep them awake, feeding and growing through the winter months.

Our dry warm Summer ran right to the end of October, with November rain finally seeping its way into the parched soil. I expect the winter to continue wet after such a long dry spell but time will tell.
Looking good
This time of the year we need bright cheery colours to lift the spirits . What better plant for this job than Winter Jasmine. The brilliant yellow flowers (see pic) are borne on long green scrambling stems and will appear in winter and early spring. After flowering, cut back shoots to strong buds

red and purple, but golds, greens, and other colours are now available (see pic) Heucherellas add more variety with variegated forms and fantastic marbling of the foliage. If the weather does take a turn for a severe frost, it might be handy to have a provisional plan to protect your favourite plants which may not be up to ten below freezing. Plants in pots such as bay laurel or olive trees can be moved into the warmest spot or inside. Those in the ground can be wrapped in sacking or mulched with straw.
Jobs in the garden
In a mild spell, fruit trees can be pruned. Apple trees that have become too large can be pruned hard but this will produce vigorous vertical shoots that are best pruned back in the summer.
You may need to feed your trees to support all this growth . Well rotted manure is ideal to mulch around the base of the tree. If you get a load in , then the

vegetable plot can be manured as well. Black currant bushes need annual treatment. Leave the younger growth but cut back oldest shoots to ground level , to leave an open framework to give you a bumper crop of fruit next summer. Mulch with well rotted manure for maximum yield and health.
Heres to a white Xmas!
Can I plant in the winter?
One of the most common questions and the answer is Yes! Providing soil and weather conditions are good, then crack on and get those hardy plants in the ground . Planting well before top growth starts, will allow them to make vital root growth before romping away in the spring.
