Living Together
An increasing number of people in England choose to live together rather than get married. Cohabiting couples are sometimes unaware of how differently from a married couple the law may treat them, if their relationship breaks down.
If a married couple splits up, the value of any property, pensions or bank accounts that they may have could be divided equally between them, no matter whose name those assets are actually in.
For cohabiting couples, however, the position is very different. For example, an unmarried couple might live in a house owned by one of them whilst the other might pay grocery or utility bills. If that couple were to split up, there would be no automatic right for them to share ownership of the house, even if they had lived there together for many years. The process for establishing a share in the house through the courts can be costly and lengthy, with no guarantee of success.
To advertise at a price thats right for you
In spite of the fact that there is no such thing as a ‘common law marriage’, many cohabiting couples think that they will have the same rights as a married couple if their relationship breaks down.
Although that is not the case, there are steps they can take to protect their assets, such as entering into a Cohabitation Agreement.
If you would like further advice regarding Cohabitation Agreements or other family law matters, contact Patrick Mulcare at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01295 204000 or email him at pmulcare@se-law.co.uk.

If working to be a better version of yourself is amongst your New Year’s resolutions for 2018, then those allimportant first steps are crucial to ensure success. Forget the usual mad exercise regimes and post-Christmas crash diets – it’s all about feeling and looking your best, and creating this is more like a marathon, not a sprint! • Ease back into healthy living steadily – changing any aspect of your lifestyle too quickly spells certain failure. • Decide which aspects you want to work on, and take it gently! How to survive the holidays… with your sanity intact! We’re being bombarded, as usual at this cheery time of year, with festive messages, an abundance of tinsel, baubles and wrapping paper littering every surface…….phew!! if that’s not enough to have steam pouring from your ears, add in the prospect of incoming in-laws – ‘tis indeed the season of smiling through gritted teeth and peeling a barrage of sprouts! i’ve battled my way through many a yuletide, emerging at new Year in varying states of chocolate overdose and exhaustion, but it has helped me come up with a few top tips to keep you sane, starting with preparation you can do now:
better than the ready-made versions
•
Make a one-pot sharing dish – i like to do a huge lasagne - for Christmas eve, so that you can wrap presents merrily, as inebriated as you feel necessary, and the many guests who pop in with gifts, can help themselves
•
expect chaos – over excited kids (and overly merry adults!) make a mess. there’s not much that stain remover, bin liners and kitchen roll Defrost the freezer - you’ll can’t cope with, see why later. Chuck out so stock up anything that’s encased in a in advance snowball, or that you have to and save chip off the back with a stout getting spatula stressed when red Plan and cook ahead. Work wine hits that new out all the meals you’d rather carpet not slave over – and decide which you can pre-prep and freeze. Pigs in blankets, stuffing, gravy – all can be precooked and frozen weeks ahead, and still taste heaps
• •
Locally based family run business Removals from property or business premises - packing service available Fully insured to take the worry away Cleaning service provided to give you a helping hand Upholstery and carpet cleans available Safe, experienced and reliable 24
To advertise at a price thats right for you
•
Bribe the kids – the way you were as a child! it’s an absolute fact that Santa only delivers to kids who tidy their bedrooms, or help with the shopping – so keep the legend going for a new generation, and ensure a few moments’ peace
•
Stock the medicine cabinet – kids’ pain relief, some for the adults, remedies for upset tummies and indigestion and a big box of plasters – that’ll see you through most things
•
Pet-proof your presents – many a box of chocolates, wrapped and under the tree, has been eaten by the family dog – you don’t need the worry and out-of- hours vets’ bills, so keep anything toxic or tempting well out of the way
•
relax and delegate – you’re not superhuman, and nobody really cares if things aren’t perfect – what matters is that everyone is happy and has a fabulous time, with the people who really mean the most – and that’s something money can’t buy

Brackley have been riding high recently with their successes on the squash court but were absolutely delighted when the Club was praised in Parliament by their local MP Andrea Leadsom. Responding in a debate to a question from Corby MP, Tom Pursglove, as to why Corby lacked any squash courts, the Leader of the House of Commons cited Brackley as doing rather well in the local leagues and that the Club was a great place to train! It certainly highlighted that squash is one of the best sports in the world for overall fitness. Brackley Squash continues to thrive with membership increasing to 195 and the Junior Section particularly growing in popularity. The Club now has two in-house coaches with Martin Hall progressing to level 2 and Alistair Brown recently achieving his level 1 accreditation from the national body England Squash. The rolling programme of Northants Junior Squash Grand Prix events comes to Brackley on Saturday November 25th. Several local dignities have been invited to attend the event to see first- hand the benefits of the sport for juniors and the dedication of the coaches and parent helpers . Andy Bright, club chairman, commented “This has been another great 6 months for the club

GARDENING THIS MONTH
Christmas is just around the corner and we are approaching the shortest day. So the weather should be as cold as it gets. However winters typically don’t peak until January or even February as the lack of sun allows these latitudes to continue to cool. Are we to get a ‘proper’ winter?
Jobs in the Garden
Be prepared to move under protection the less hardy plants if they are in moveable containers. Plants staying in the ground can be protected in various ways; straw and hessian sacking, bubble wrap and layers of fleece are all possibilities. Ideally these coverings should be used as a temporary measure because plants need to ‘breathe’ even in winter and a warm cossetted plant will make a perfect home for hungry rodents!
Hedges and Trees
Now we are in to the ‘dormant’ season, so field grown (rather than container grown) plants are available at nurseries. Bare root subjects range

from roses to fruit trees and include the full range of native trees and shrubs suitable for hedging, growing as small groups or planting on a larger scale. Perhaps you could give up a corner of a field, or in a small garden a few native shrubs could be squeezed in. Not only will they be wildlife friendly, you can feel proud to be part of the trendy ‘carbon-offset’ movement. For a native hedge with a more uniform look consider Beech , or Holly which is much underrated. If it has to be coniferous English Yew gives the classic look and will grow at a reasonable rate if well fed, contrary to popular belief that it is rather slow.
Looking Good
Gloomy winter days need brightening up and what better than a Mahonia ‘Charity’ (see picture); grown in sun or shade this architectural shrub with glossy shiny leaves holds high its fragrant lemon yellow flowers. One small tree which really shines in the winter is the Tibetan Cherry, Prunus serrula Tibetica. The glossy bark of this species will peel away and with back light will glow a lustrous amber colour(see pic) . Spring brings small white flowers and Autumn will nice yellow leaf colours. If space is limited try growing as a multi-stemmed tree for even more stem effects.

Xmas Trees – not just for Christmas? It seems such a shame that so many carefully grown trees are cut off in their prime only to be shredded for compost a few weeks later. Perhaps try thinking of buying your Christmas tree in a slightly different way: what sort of conifer would you like to see growing in your garden over the years to come, then work backwards from there to the size and type to buy now. An alternative is to buy a pot grown tree that will look good now and in the years to come. Serbian Spruce make a lovely specimen (see pic): you can bring it inside and just place in a cool spot away from radiators and keep well watered.
As a point of interest all ‘cut’ Christmas trees keep much better with their stump in water, having cut off the bottom half inch first.

BRACKLEY JUBILEE CHOIR - 40TH ANNIVERSARY
This 40th Anniversary year for the Brackley Jubilee Choir has been one of growth and success, looking back over its history, including some of the music sung during the inaugural concert repeated in the successful summer concert in July, 2017. The final concert of the year will take place on Saturday, 2 December, in St Peter’s Church, Brackley, beginning at 7.30. The appealing music the choir will sing consists of two favourite works within the choral repertoire:- Vivaldi’s Gloria and Haydn’s Nelson
Mass, both accompanied by the Cherwell Orchestra. The soloists are:- Emma Griffiths, soprano; Felicity Hope, alto; Philip Fine, tenor, and Theo Perry, bass – all of whom are known to the choir and Brackley audiences. The orchestra will also play Mozart’s Serenade in G, K525, known as Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The conductor is Stuart Hubble, well known in Brackley music circles. Ticket price is £10 (free to 16 and under).
