Stop Start...
The season has been a stop-start affair for Brackley Town so far. The team is in roughly the same place as at this point last season, poised for a promotion play-off place push. The FA Cup run brought welcome cash and media attention for the club before going out at National League Hartlepool with an excellent performance losing out 0-1. The season has inevitably been dominated by the fire that destroyed the St James Park clubhouse in June. Fund-raising efforts continue and have been supported by supporters but also many people in the town.
The club has ambitious plans to re-build the clubhouse only bigger and better but additional funds will be required to boost the insurance monies. After quiz nights, a race night, a bingo event and buy-a-brick campaign, watch out for future events.

At the same time as efforts continue to fund-raise for a new club-house, the generous suport of South Northants District Council has facilitated further development at St James Park including additional covered terracing and new covered seating. The ground is at National League standard so all ready to support the team when they make that step up! The club website and Twitter feed promote forthcoming fixtures and social activities so stay in touch. Your support for the team on the pitch and the club off it is vital if we are to retain a football team competing at such a high level.

There’s something really special about a home-made Christmas – whether it’s baking your own cake from a much-loved recipe, or creating an amazing
festive wreath for the front door. Hand-made tree decorations are a lovely idea – they can be boxed up and kept for many years, and it’s something the kids can get involved with, too. Salt dough decorations are good to make with even the smallest children – and with only a few basic ingredients, they’re brilliant if you’re on a budget. Just choose a mug as your measure, and for every mugful of plain flour, you’ll need half a mug of table salt, one teaspoon of cooking oil and up to half a mug of water. Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl, add the oil and about half the water. Work the mixture with your hands, adding water until it just

sticks together, then knead into a ball. Roll out to about 1cm thick and use cookie cutters to create festive shapes, or make a template out of card and cut around it. Make a hole with a teaspoon handle near the top of each shape and pop them onto a lined baking sheet. Bake in the lowest oven you can, until they’ve completely dried out – this can take a few hours. Once they’re cool, paint or varnish the shapes, add glitter and let them dry before threading ribbon or twine through the hole to create a hanging loop. The salt preserves the dough and they should last for many years to come. Feather baubles add a sophisticated, country-chic look to your tree, and are very easy to make! You’ll need some polystyrene balls, either 8 or 10cm diameter – available from craft shops. Ask your local game dealer for some partridge or pheasant breast feathers, or buy some online. Take a mattress needle, threaded with twine or ribbon and push straight through a bauble, then hold the loop and push the needle back – knot the free ends at the base and glue these down with PVA or a glue gun. Cover each feather in a little glue and start at the base of the bauble, layering them around the shape. At the top, you can glue on a spent cartridge top or tie a ribbon bow to add that finishing touch.

With days at thier shortest, the weather cold and damp, and far too much to do in the ‘run up’ its hardly surprising that most of us barely make into the garden. For thousands of years we have been bringing ‘the green’ in at this time of year and the traditional Christmas tree is our modern day nod to our pre-Christian past. On some level, we still want and need to connect with green, albeit in the comfort of our centrally heated houses. The wreaths on the door, the ubiquitous pot of red and green poinsettia, the prepared bulbs flowering in time for family and friends’ festive visits are great for bringing the outside in and keeping that connection.
I like to take extra care of the outdoor entrance space at this time of year. Often forgotten and neglected, is the area between the road and front door, but what a great opportunity to welcome visitors (and yourself!) with some cheery pots of evergreens and winter flowers. Cyclamen, polyanthus, violas, heathers will flower through all but the worst winter weather. Planting shrubs with berries will give you interest at this time of year, every year and will provide blackbirds and winter migratory birds an essential food source. Pyracantha is great as a wall shrub, cotoneaster and of course holly are also good choices. All can be pruned to shape and space. String some outdoor lights through the shrubs to give a twinkly welcome through the dark nights, not just during the festive period.
