Family Focus

Sort those sleep patterns

There are plenty of wonderful things about having small children, but lack of sleep certainly isn’t one of them! If you look back wistfully on the days when your baby would sleep through the night, leaving you to luxuriate in a bubble bath and some glorious sleep yourself, we have some tips for you. Persuading toddlers that they’ll settle down at bedtime and doze off until morning is very possible, with a little preparation and a lot of patience and determination – it can happen in just a week.

TOP TIPS 4

1. Agree with other adults in the household that they’ll join you in sleep training your toddler for the week – everyone has to be on the same page 2. Make sure they’ll be safe if they toddle out of bed – with stairgates, electrical socket covers and low level lighting in and around their room 3. Try to establish a regular bedtime, and limit daytime naps, particularly during the afternoon 4. Have a bedtime routine you’ll be happy to repeat every day – quiet playtime after tea, then a warm bath, bedtime story and switch on a nightlight to make their bedroom a cosy space 5. If your little one gets straight out of bed, or wakes in the night, simply put them back into bed each time - don’t

discuss anything, a simple ‘Night-night’ is all they need 6. Don’t let them toddle out of their room and into your bed – it may mean you can sleep for that night, but will become a habit that’s hard to break and deprives you of good quality sleep – settle them back in their own room each time 7. Persevere – you can do it! Even if it means settling your toddler back into bed 20 times the first night, they will get the message within the week, and then you can enjoy glorious, uninterrupted sleep

The Pitfalls of Probate

Government processes aren’t easy to navigate at the best of times but working out how to apply for a Grant of Probate when grieving for a loved one can make a difficult time much worse. There are different forms to complete depending on the value of the estate left by the person who has died, who it has been left to and whether there is inheritance tax to pay. In most cases tax isn’t payable, either because everything has been left to a surviving spouse, or because the value of the estate is within the tax free allowance, but it is important to make sure your sums are right before submitting the forms to avoid a potential investigation and penalty from HM Revenue and Customs. Instructing a solicitor at Spratt Endicott to obtain the Grant of Probate for you will usually cost between £750 and £1000 plus VAT (not including the administration of the estate) depending on how complicated the matter is – we do not charge a fee based on the value of

the estate. Spratt Endicott is recognised by The Legal 500 UK (A clients’ guide to the capabilities of law firms) as the leading firm in North Oxfordshire in terms of its expertise and experience in the areas of personal tax, trusts, estate planning, wills and probate. We deliver these services at competitive prices and can often agree a fixed fee with you at the outset of the matter. If you would like more information or to discuss your particular circumstances, please contact Jennifer Koch on 01869 252761 or email jkoch@se-law.co.uk.

Many of you may have heard all about the ever increasing cyberattacks. This year so far has become a real problem to businesses and domestic users. Throughout rest of this year, it may get far worse due to ever changing strain of malware and the type of malware in question is called ‘Ransomware’ the so called CryptoWare family. This menace will completely destroy your photos, documents and any personal data stored on servers and computers including financial data like Sage accounting. These types of attacks will deliver through email attachments, bogus emails and infected website downloads. The sad fact is mostly people who have email addresses from their email provider which

don’t have a real form of mail security protection and low level Internet security e.g. free antivirus software are at high risk of being compromised. During our penetration testing and investigation, users who have purchased Internet security the likes of McAfee, AVG and Norton are ineffective. This form of vulnerability requires a realtime antimalware and a software restriction policy e.g. Malwarebytes and Bitdefender vaccine tool to the file system. Businesses with several networking computers and data servers advise to secure their IT infrastructure soon as possible.

Sunscreen – check your factors!

When you want to soak up some sun, and enjoy a Summer’s day or well-earned holiday without nasty side-effects, you need sunscreen. Turning a shade of beetroot and risking unpleasant peeling and long-term damage which could lead to skin cancer just isn’t acceptable – if you want an instant, glowing healthy tan, fake is the way forward. If you’re a parent, you’ll know that ensuring little ones are covered up with sun cream, a hat and loose clothing is the best way for them to enjoy playing outside in the Summer months, so here are a few top tips to ensure you’re adequately protected

Pets Corner

We all know

the importance of protecting ourselves against the sun; we have sun creams to protect us from burning, sunglasses to block out harmful UV rays, and access to water and ice lollies to rehydrate. But what

about pets? Animals are just as vulnerable to the sun as humans, yet are often forgotten about during hot summer days. There are several things you can do for your pet to ensure they don’t suffer sunburn, dehydration or overheating. Every species of animal has different needs, so we have categorised the advice below

for dogs and cats. Do NOT be tempted to apply human sunscreens to your pet; they contain zinc oxide which is extremely poisonous to animals. Remember, extra care will need to be taken for very young, old or ill pets as they are especially vulnerable to heat.

Our senior vets with over 30 years worth of experience in small animal care will visit you in the comfort of your own home

GARDENING THIS MONTH...

Hotter than July?

My money is on a summer heatwave but that’s only based on having more than our fair share of wet weather for more than six months now. Still the rain has helped the gardens with lots of lush growth and summer blooms to come. Holiday tactics

Its good practice to get someone in to check over and ideally water anything dry and mow the lawn of course. A friendly neighbour or even a professional especially if it going to be more than a week or two. Your friend can pick or take away ripe vegetables and fruit, and even cut flowers that would otherwise go over , such as dahlias and chrysanths. Mulching is an option for areas of bare soil and

particularly around thirsty plants. Water dry soil thoroughly first, then add 5cm of wellrotted manure, garden compost, or proprietary mulches. This will not only help to conserve water in the soil, but also add nutrients as the material is gradually broken down by microbial, invertebrate and insect activity.

Looking good

Monardas or bergamots are very insect friendly, summer flowering perennials with quirky , slightly scruffy flower heads. Try Monarda Scorpion (see pic)

with its purplish red hooked flowers on tall stiff stems up to 120cm. They are real insect magnets, so keep an eye out for many different types. Hydrangea paniculata starts flowering in July and continues into the autumn. There are now many different varieties of this large shrub to choose from but most produce conical heads that turn from white to cream and then fade to pink. The form Limelight

(see pic) has sumptuous acid green blooms which turn to Cornish cream and then dusky pink in the autumn. For best flowering, prune last year’s growth back to four buds in March as the new shoots will produce new flowers.

this month . One way of dealing with a glut is to freeze them . they can be spread out on a tray in the freezer and then put in tubs for delicious snacks and puddings in the winter. After fruiting, prune the old canes back . Next year’s fruit will be produced on this year’s young canes, so don’t prune these!
