Throughout your child’s education, they will be required to write assessments to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the school year. This can be a stressful time. Check out our top 10 tips that you can share with your child to set them up for success.
1. Keep a positive attitude throughout the test and try to stay relaxed. If you start to feel nervous take a few deep breaths. 2. Pace yourself, don’t rush. Read the whole question and pay attention to all the details. 3 Look for key words in every question to help you to understand and answer what is being asked of you. 4 Write neatly. If the marker can’t read what you have written; your answer may be marked as incorrect.
5 Neatly shade ONE bubble when answering the multiple choice questions. Your answer needs to be clear.
6 A process of elimination may be helpful when answering multiple-choice questions. Remember multiple choice questions are about finding the most correct answer. 7 Plan your written responses. Take a few minutes to decide what you are going to write
about and write down a few points to keep yourself on track.
8 Give it a try! If you don’t know the answer, don’t worry. Just do your best to answer the question and at the very least, go with the answer that seems correct. 9 9. Review. If you have time left when you have finished the assessment, look over it and make sure you haven’t missed any questions. If you have time, redo the questions and check you have indicated the correct answers.
10 Don’t worry if other students finish before you. Focus on what you are doing and what is in front of you.

Providing Peace of Mind
As summer approaches, the attention of the nation turns to long sunny days, holidays and relaxation. The last thing on most people’s minds is whether their Will is up to date or if they have Lasting Powers of Attorney in place. Although most people do take out travel insurance before going on holiday to make sure they are reimbursed for cancelled flights or substandard hotels, have you put as much thought into how your family would cope if you had an accident while on holiday as you have into how far your hotel is from the nearest beach? If you were temporarily incapacitated for any reason, who would have the authority to run your business? Would anyone be able to access your finances in order to fund medical care or make sure your household bills get paid? Who would look after your children? These are all scenarios that can be catered for in advance by making Lasting Powers of Attorney and a Will to ensure that if the worst were to happen, you
and your loved ones will be looked after. Spratt Endicott is recognised by the Legal 500 as the leading firm in North Oxfordshire in terms of its expertise and experience in the area of Wills and Probate. We deliver these services at competitive prices and can often agree a fixed fee with you at the outset of the matter.

Perfect curls!
With tumbling ringlets and glorious curls now back in style and seen being sported by many a celebrity, perms are becoming popular once again, and many people are binning their straighteners and embracing the natural waves that they’ve been hiding for so long. Keeping curls in perfect condition takes a few more minutes in a morning, but the results are very worthwhile! If you’ve been straightening forever and now want to release those ringlets, condition is key to looking great. • Curly hair will go frizzy if brushed when it is dry, so needs to be combed through or simply untangled with your fingers, whilst still wet.

Health, Beauty & Fashion Cont.... • If you haven’t time to wash your locks, a plant sprayer is handy – damp it down, add a small amount of frizz-reducing product to your hands, and smooth through the length of your hair, style with your fingertips and leave to dry naturally for best results. • Hairdryers can blast curls away, so air drying or using a diffuser is better. If you’re short of time, hairdrying until just damp, with your head upside down, keeps body and volume. • Curls look best when you don’t shampoo too frequently. Rinsing through with just conditioner in between shampoos will smooth the surface of the hair and doesn’t remove moisture. • Choose your hairdresser carefully – pick one who really can cut curls! For shorter styles, get a trim every eight weeks or so, to prevent frizz due to split ends, and for longer styles, regular deep conditioning treatments keep hair looking healthy and a trim every few months keeps your style sassy.

Tricky Topics
Much as we try to protect children from the harsher side of everyday living, sometimes there’s nothing we can do to prevent the inevitable occurring – pets get old and die, loved ones sometimes get ill, friends may have to move away. None of us enjoy breaking bad news, or discussing awkward issues, but as parents we have to pass this information on to our kids in a sensitive way that they can easily understand. Knowing your individual child will influence the approach you choose, and here are a few basics to help in getting things right first time, whilst you’re feeling sad yourself. Be truthful – answer questions as honestly as possible, at a level your child will understand. Telling white lies to protect a child from a painful event can backfire if they find out the truth at a later date. 22
Let them see for themselves – If Granny has been taken very ill, explain what has happened and expect them to ask ‘Why?’ a lot. If she doesn’t mind a small visitor, take little ones to see where Granny is and what’s happening and suggest that maybe taking her some of their beautifully drawn pictures might help her feel a bit better. If their pet has died, let them see what that looks like - that he can’t run around or eat any more, he’s very still – and let children ask plenty of questions and help with a little burial. The most common question from three or four-year- old children upwards is whether they,or you, will die as well, and why it happens. My answer would be that 4 is very old for a hamster, but not for a person, that we only get that old when we’re maybe 90, and
that’s a very long way away. Small children process things by role playing, acting out scenarios with soft toys or dolls as the main characters, or drawing pictures of what happened. If your child does this, talk to them gently about what’s happening, and answer any questions about the reallife event. Little ones are resilient, and with your help, they will bounce back from sadness and continue with their happy and wonderful lives.

GARDENING THIS MONTH...
A basketful of ideas Love them or loathe them, nothing sets up the garden for summer like a vibrant display of hanging baskets, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. However, there are some interesting findings about of planting and growing habits as a recent Thompson & Morgan survey of the nation’s gardeners has revealed. On the face of it hanging baskets
have always been popular however our tastes perhaps are changing too! Red is the nation’s favourite basket flower colour closely followed by purple and pink.
Interestingly just 5% prefer white flowers, and while only 10% chose yellow and 9% orange, Begonia ‘Apricot Shades’ received the most
mentions as a favourite hanging basket plant, with trailing Begonias, Petunias and Fuchsias in general filling the top slots. At the Garden Centre single variety and colour plantings remain popular which slightly jars with the survey which indicated only 9% enjoy these types. Bold traditional plantings

Written by Chris Day Buckingham Garden Centre featuring two or three flower colours remain the most popular at 38% and 26% go all out with a riot of mixed colour in their baskets, while 27% of respondents said they employ a combination of single colours, duos, trios and mixes across their various baskets. I suppose it all comes to one’s own taste in colours; however traditional pastel colours probably outweigh the more riotous themes when it comes to our customers selecting colours for their baskets. Observationally you tend to see these boldly planted pastels colours featuring outside pubs, hotels and restaurants, but back in 2012 with the London Olympics it was a good excuse to be patriotic with bold red, white and blue plantings, which looked great! One enterprising grower to the gardening trade has created ‘instant drop in’ Easy Planters,
perfect for both pots and baskets. The grower knows his plants and colours and they are beautifully themed to give a great impact full display and they’ve proved hugely popular with our customers! The drop-in mesh based container the plants are grown in
allows the roots to grow through into the surrounding compost. All you do is simply place the Easy Planter in the centre of the container and infill with some multi-purpose compost around the mesh planter to complete the planting. One question we always get asked is specific hanging plants for certain aspects and conditions. While most of us enjoy sunny locations so the usual mix of Petunias, Pelargoniums (upright and trailing forms) and Lobelia, spare a thought for those awkward shady spots. Not all is lost – go for shade lovers such as trailing and upright Fuchsias, Begonia semperflorens, Trailing Begonia ‘Tenella’ and the revamped mildew-resistant New Guinea Busy Lizzies (Impatiens) such as the ‘Devine’ range. If you want to add foliage – Hedera (ivies), Helichrysum (silver and gold forms) and Lysimachia (Creeping Jenny), both the green
33
and golden leaved forms are fantastic to compliment your colour There are many cutting raised ‘filler’ plants which you can use to help add the detail and finery to your basket displays. Good ones to consider for your baskets include Bacopa, Brachyscome (Swan River Daisy), Diascia, Felicia amelloides, Nasturtium (especially the variegated foliage form), Nepeta Hederacea Variegata and trailing Verbena.. It appears many gardeners, including me, like using hanging baskets as an experimental lab and over 60%, who took part in the Thompson & Morgan survey, look to try something different in their displays this summer; for instance some of the new Petunias
such as the Multiflora types like ‘Duo’, ‘Frenzy’ and ‘Select Mixed’. There are some Petunias, namely Calibrachoa which have so-called self-cleaning qualities, that is they naturally do not produce seeds so do not require any deadheading and the varieties of ‘Million Bells’ are well worth searching out. Some of the novelty Petunias are well worth pursuing too, including the black and yellow star patterned ‘Phantom’. New this season is the world’s first speckled Petunia, violet with white spots, called aptly ‘NightSky’ ®. We saw this at the Ball Colegrave Public Open Evening last summer and this one

will certainly catch the eye when grown in hanging baskets and where the flowers can be seen at close quarters. Tastes in basket style are fast changing too, with just 13% opting for traditional moss-lined wire baskets. Coir matting is now the preferred option for lining older style baskets, but 45% of respondents said they had no need for basket liners as they now use pre-lined wicker baskets or plastic Easy Fill Baskets that require no lining at all. These were also chosen for their durability and ease of planting and upkeep through the season. This pattern has certainly been reflected at the

Garden Centre and whilst moss is perceived as best, in practise it requires more care and watering through the season, plus it’s not the cheapest When it comes to selecting the best compost for your basket then we have lots of possibilities. A good all-round multipurpose compost such as J. Arthur Bower’s Multi-Purpose will be fine but it may be worth adding slow release Osmocote Fertiliser to the compost as well as water retaining gel such as Swelgel or Broadleaf P4 to help keep your plants in fine fettle for the season. Alternatively, opt for a more inclusive compost such as J Arthur Bower’s
Masterblend, made from 100% Scottish peat with added John Innes and a six-month controlledrelease fertiliser. It also contains Celcote, an ingredient which is claimed to result in watering savings of up to 25%, “without plant stress or wilt”. You can, of course, additionally feed with a high potash fertiliser such as
Phostrogen or a tomato feed such as Tomorite from late June onwards. Half-strength feed at every watering often gives the best results.. Interestingly experimenting with the likes of edibles in baskets has only seen 36% of basket gardeners trying fruit or vegetables in their hanging
displays, despite many edible plants being suitable for baskets. For those that do ‘grow their own’ this way, Strawberries, Tomatoes and mixed herbs were the most common planting option, however the likes of the Raspberry ‘Ruby Beauty’ and even mixed Lettuce looks set to move edibles into a different league. Gardeners are savvy about the benefits of regular deadheading of basket plants to promote more flowers and to help extend the life of their basket displays. Just 1% admitted to never deadheading, saying life is too short! But 31% deadhead their basket plants on a weekly basis, and 29% do it daily. Interestingly, 23% deadhead twice a week, leaving 16% to do it “when remembered”.

To underline the popularity of the event entries have already been received from various parts of the country and enthusiastic local soapbox builders are urged to get their entries in as soon as possible as entries will be limited this year. Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 apprentices will also be racing their SB16 soapbox on the High Street in the premier class which they won in 2014 and 2015. Brackley Soapbox Derby will once again be supporting The Katherine House Hospice and a soapbox will be running in their name with an opportunity to win raffle prizes in support of the charity. Brackley Soapbox Derby is a family event and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a great afternoon. Snacks, drinks and other attractions will also be accessible in the Market Square during the afternoon. Entries are still available and further information including entry forms and technical regulations can be obtained on the soapbox website

lead in their match. In a pulsating second period Brackley took the lead through Glenn Walker before St James Park erupted as news came through that Gloucester had equalised. Full-time approached with 4 minutes of added time at Lowestoft and 5 minutes added at St James Park. First Gloucester held on to record the draw and moments later the referee signalled the vital win that Brackley had yearned. Supporters had turned out determined to make it a special day and donned fancy dress for the occasion. On the final whistle it really was party time! Brackley's Football Season Ends...
The football season has ended for Brackley Town and for the second season running Saints’ place in the National League came down to the final game. Facing Tamworth at St James Park only a home win and no better than a draw for rivals Lowestoft Town in their home
game against Gloucester City would be enough to keep Brackley up. In a remarkable afternoon of drama and high tension all was going wrong at the half-way mark as Brackley were scoreless against Tamworth but Lowestoft had the www.brackleytownfc.com

The Brackley Jubilee Choir, with soloists and children’s choir, accompanied by two pianos and percussion, will be performing the ever popular Carmina Burana by Carl Orff on Saturday, 2 July, in St Peter’s Church, Brackley, beginning at 7.30. The text is taken from 24 mediaeval poems, covering a wide range of subjects including the fickleness of wealth and fortune, the joy of the return of Spring and the pleasures (and dangers) of drinking, gluttony and lust, as heard in the tavern sequence. The conductor is Stuart Hubble. The first half of the concert is dedicated to arias and operatic choruses, most of them familiar. This is the choir’s summer concert, dedicated to the memory of Eddie Palmer whose vision brought the choir into being as an integral part of Brackley’s music scene.Tickets (£10 with children under 16 free) are available from choir members or at the door.
