The first Monday in May is a date that’s steeped in tradition. May Day, as it’s known, is not just a countrywide Bank Holiday, but has its roots as a day of celebration in ancient times, as an end to the cold austerity of winter and a start to the new season of growth. Festivities at the start of May are thought to date back as far as the Roman occupation of Britain, when soldiers brought their customary celebrations of the Floralia – a week of dancing and feasting to please their goddess Flora – at the end of April and into the start of May. Flora was goddess of flowers and blossom, and so keeping her happy was thought to help bring a good fruit harvest. with ribbons. There are many current May Day celebrations which are very similar to those seen in Roman times, with dancing around a Maypole, Morris dancing and Floral Dances in many areas.
Well Dressing is another lovely custom involving flowers, which starts around May Day. It is a blessing and chance to give thanks for natural water sources, which dates back to Celtic times and survived in just a few small Peak District villages. This lovely celebration has increased in popularity of late, and is a great way for communities to come together to create something beautiful from completely natural materials. A large wooden frame is filled with damp clay, into which a picture is pricked out and the wcolours and textures are created with flower petals, moss, seeds and other naturally beautiful materials. Once completed, this is placed by a well or natural spring and a ceremony gives thanks for the water. So whatever your plans for the Bank Holiday, enjoy the wonderful flowers and delights of nature this May Day – and let’s hope for some wonderful sunshine to go with it!

The season of Hawthorn and cow parsley is upon us. May is the month that up and down the country, roadsides and hedgerows are transformed into a frothy idyll. Some garden(er)s struggle with May, as it is between the spring bulbs but before the perennials get going. Personally, I don’t agree with that; Camassias and Alliums (see pics!) extend the bulbs and Lapins cherry, Aquilegia, Geums, Iris
and hardy Geraniums are just hitting their stride by the end of the month. Above there are the blossoms of apples, Cercis, Laburnum, Wisteria, Exochorda... there really is a lot going on. So many jobs to be getting on with too.

A May flowering hawthorn, it drops it’s leaves late, has larger haws than those in the hedges and isn’t too unruly or spiny, so is a lovely garden tree. Combined with Anthriscus

It has been another remarkable season at St James Park for National League North side Brackley Town. After last season’s magnificent achievement of reaching a Wembley final and beating favourites Bromley to win the FA Trophy as well as reaching the play-off final losing out to Harrogate Town, Saints have again enjoyed a successful season. Bowing out of the FA Trophy only at the quarter-final stage against National League leaders Leyton Orient in a closely fought game, Kevin Wilkin’s team achieved a play-off spot and enters the play-off games with nobody to fear. After a dip in November and December, the team’s form in 2019
has been terrific including a run of eleven wins in twelve matches. Climbing from tenth place at Christmas into the top three was a remarkable achievement. Attendances at home games rose for the third season running averaging over 600 for the first time. The division hosts lots of big clubs, many with former league status. Over half the teams in the division average over one thousand for home attendances including Stockport County at around the three thousand mark! So football at this level is a huge challenge for a club from a small Northamptonshire town of just 15,000 people. The team won the Senior Cup beating AFC Rushden & Diamonds at The Cobblers’ Sixfields Stadium
