Brackley Town Football Club... w w w.b rac k le y to wn fc .c om

The National League North season is well and truly underway with the first ten games played and the early rounds of the FA Cup competition in full swung. The club has worked a miracle to even be hosting top level non-league football at St James Park after the terrible fire that tore through the clubhouse in June. But temporary arrangements have kept the show on the road and exciting longer term plans will eventually see a new St James Park taking shape. So to the football itself ... Brackley started as last season with a poor run of results losing two of the first three games but have recovered somewhat to climb into the top eight. Home form has

been really strong, dropping points in just one game, a draw, while winning the others. Away from St James Park form has not been so good but a fine first away win at Kidderminster Harriers in the first week of September pointed the way ahead. Fans favourite Jimmy Armson has been top of the goal scoring charts hitting a purple patch of five goals in just four games. But perhaps the real story has been the drama of penalties. Last year Saints conceded just three penalty kicks in the nine month season, yet have conceded four already! They have been awarded two penalties themselves, scoring once from the two golden opportunities to register a goal.

In the FA Cup Saints look back on a terrific record in recent seasons, that is apart from last season’s early exit at the hands of Marine, a team from a lower league. This season Kevin Wilkin’s team will be hoping to progress deep into the tournament where the prize money even in these early preliminary and qualifying rounds is significant for non-league clubs.

Top Scorer Jimmy Armson

The importance of seeking legal advice when making a will The Law Commission reported that around 40% of people don’t have wills. Due to changing patterns in family life such as partners cohabiting or having second families making a will is becoming ever more important. Unfortunately, even when a will is made problems can arise if it is not drafted carefully. Many people believe a DIY will, will be cheap, however if it is incorrectly drafted, the cost to a person’s estate can far outweigh the initial cost had they gone to a professional. Problems may arise as a result of mistakes in the drafting of the will, the meaning of the will being unclear, or issues with the execution of the will. The Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) have been reported to suggest that ‘poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are to blame for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year’. This risks leaving a legacy of financial and

emotional strain plus potentially higher legal and tax bills. Even when consulting a professional, be aware that anyone can be a ‘will writer’ without needing legal qualification or regulation. However, solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and must have indemnity insurance, which means that if anything goes wrong, you are protected. Making a will with a solicitor needn’t be expensive. At Spratt Endicott, the usual cost for making a single will is £275 plus VAT or £375 plus VAT for mirror wills. If you would like to discuss making, or updating your will please contact Julia Routen on 01295 204 012 or jrouten@se-law.co.uk.

Eco-friendly Hallowe

With Halloween just around the corner, I’m mixing things up a bit this year. I want to put up the usual mad and spooky decorations, but I’m keen to avoid the mountains of plastic and keep things a bit more eco-friendly! I’ve come up with some upcycling ideas and compostable creations, which will look great on the day but won’t hurt the environment – or your bank balance! Pumpkin spiders A pumpkin just shouts Halloween, so it’s great that they’re cheap to buy, fun to carve and then completely home-compostable – they’ll rot down to give goodness back to your garden in just a few months. Choose a smaller pumpkin, cut off the top, scoop out the middle and carve a spooky face, then push 4 L-shaped sticks into each side to create scary spider legs. A rechargeable tealight placed in the centre provides a safe flickering glow, and you could make a few spooky spiders to line your garden path, or one for either side of the front door.

Floating ghosts This one is super-cheap and simple to make, so even the smallest children will love helping to create it! Just get an ordinary white balloon, inflate to about 2/3 full – so it’s easy to knot the neck – and tie on some string to hang it from. Pop a few pieces of double sided sticky tape on the neck end of the balloon and remove the backing. Take a 20

recycled piece of white fabric – maybe cut from an old school shirt or pillowcase – and hang it over the balloon, making a hole in the centre for the string to be pushed through. Press it over the sticky tape, to ensure it stays in place. Now you can draw on your spooky face with black marker pen, or stick on glow-in-the-dark scary eyes……. and you’re done! Hanging from a tree or bracket outside your house, these little ghosts look really effective as they blow about in the breeze. Witch’s cauldron Fun to make, looks great and it’s edible too – what’s not to like about a bowlful of gory body parts floating in yucky green slime?!

een You’ll need – a large glass bowl, some garden wire, 2 packs of lime jelly, gummy eyeballs and wiggly worm sweets. Make the wire into a loop and put this around the top of the bowl, under the rim. Twist the ends together, bringing the long end up and over to make a handle shape. Mix up two packs of lime jelly with a little extra water for a more gooey gloop, add the eyeballs and a few worm sweets, pop into the bowl and leave to set in the fridge. After a couple of hours, bring it out to decorate with a few more ‘worms’ climbing out of the cauldron and enjoy!

GA R D E N I N G T H I S M O N T H Article written by Michelle Hiscutt Once again we seem to be in a great Indian Summer, warm dry weather just keeps going, which is great for gardening and ripening fruits and seeds, so vital for animals generally, including homo sapiens. You cant help feeling there will be a wet end to the autumn as we must be due for a fair amount of rain. So a great time for planting: one good drink and then nature takes over watering duties. Looking good Its been a fine summer for our roses, with shortish spells of rain and longer dry spells to allow blooms to develop into the most gorgeous displays. Pronged rain not only batters the petals but also encourages foliar disease such as black spot. A couple of the David Austin English Rose

keep coming well into the autumn. The English Roses are brilliant but we shouldn’t forget the hundreds of other types and varieties which can contribute so much. To name just one, here’s a lovely compact patio variety called Pearl Anniversary which produces clusters of pearly pink flowers (see pic) . Plant somewhere nearby so you can see the detail in the petals and get that up-lifting moment every time. Finally, a photo of a tasty cocktail of late flowering plants in a pot: tall dainty pink Gaura, low spreading blue flowered Campanula posharskyana and the lustrous burgundy foliage of Heuchera Black Beauty, the last two of which are evergreen. All the above are available at a nursery just three miles south of Brackley, yes a shameless plug butsurprising how many folks didn’t know we existed!

Happy autumn gardening!
