Every year, in the run-up to Bonfire night, my male friends and colleagues who are usually cleanshaven, start cultivating new facial hair – they’re growing a `tache to raise cash - so what’s that all about? Movember, as it’s known, is the

brainchild of a charity which has the laudable aim of preventing men dying too young. It was started by two friends in Australia in 2003, and is now a global phenomenon, with over five million people around the world fundraising for the whole of November, in aid of Men’s health promotion. It’s not only diseases such as cancer which cause men to die before their time – mental illness is known to be a major problem, with the typical male ‘stiff upper

Ok, so it’s only November, but how would you fancy a superb meal - turkey with all the trimmings, all those delicious vegetables mm mm! Me, too! Well, if you’re American, or just fancy joining in to be neighbourly

– there’s a Christmas dinner preview by means of Thanksgiving! Always celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, Thanksgiving dates back to the 17th century, when the early pilgrim settlers celebrated their first harvest in the New World. This year, it falls on 24th of the month, and it’s a national

holiday in the USA. We don’t get a day off over here, but if you fancy joining in the celebrations a little, or planning your own Thanksgiving dinner, what’s on the menu? Roast turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, sweet potato with pumpkin pie for pudding. A delicious way to make the most of the harvest – I think I’ll be celebrating too, this year!

Buckingham Table is not just a club or an association, but a group of local men from Buckingham who meet regularly to make friends, have fun, and get involved in the local community. We are non-religious, non-political and non-sectarian, and certainly not a closed, secret society. We take pride in the fact we welcome anyone to join our events and get involved. We now number over 25 members and growing.

What do we do?

We do not hold regular formal meetings, we do not get involved in traditions or ceremonies and we do not require anyone to commit a certain amount of time. What we do is arrange regular social drinks, normally the first Friday of the month at The Woolpack in Buckingham but we also have other social events such as, hill walking, football, clay pigeon shooting, golf and curry nights etc. The entire purpose of the group is to bring together local people from the community to share a drink and a laugh. In addition to the group’s social activities, we also

another record year!! Buckingham raise money for local causes and charities. However raising money is not the group’s main purpose. What matters most is that we get involved in the local community, put something back and make a difference. In addition we liaise closely with Buckingham Rotary. We are best known for the Buckingham Santa Float, bringing joy to all the kids of Buckingham and the villages, which is a major part of out fund raising activities. Please go to our website www.buckinghamtable.org.uk for more information and how to apply for funds.

What is planned next?

October we marshal the Buckingham 10k run. November we raise funds and help clear up the Bonfire Night. December is our busiest month. We attend the Christmas Parade; Christmas Light switch on ceremony then together with Rotary and local groups drive Santa around the estates, streets of Buckingham and villages collecting more funds for good causes and charities.

Lots of medals....

The return to school is doubly busy for swimmers at Maxwell Swim Club. The young up and coming Maxwell swimmers of 12 and under raced in the Milton Keynes Junior League (MKJL). It was a tough year with some very good teams taking part. The three round competition culminated at the beginning of September. The first leg at Oxford saw strong performances from Sophie Govan, Alice Weston and Carmelo Almadin among the relay teams and saw Maxwell achieve 4 th place. The second round was very tough with the overall winners for the past two seasons being among the opponents. Despite great swims from Sophie Byron, Sean Richards, Kitty Galbraith and Kian MacNab the strength of the other sides was overwhelming and Maxwell finished in sixth place meaning the need for a positive result in the last round. The final round of the MKJL was again very tough, but this time Maxwell showed it’s potential. The team achieved 6 first places and 12 second places with Alice Weston winning two races, Isobel Cox, Joshua Weston, Sophie Byron and Eliza Hudson all winning one. Such a positive round allowed Maxwell to finish in third place on the night and gave them 13th place overall in the league and safety in the top division for another season.

s

The squad followed up this success a week later at the City of Milton Keynes Development Meet. Maxwell swimmers won 15 gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze medals. Millie Midson-Brown shone with three golds and Poppy Baybutt came away with a tremendous hall of five medals from five races. Maxwell’s success is built around the clubs core values of Excellence, Teamwork and Enthusiasm. The team hopes to extend this success into October where they will be competing every weekend.

Bonfire night for pets Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder, Treason and plot…… For humans a night that means fireworks and fun, But for four legged friends, it’s not!

If you have pets, this time of year is certainly not their favourite time. Juggling the needs of your animals whilst still wanting to celebrate Bonfire Night isn’t easy, but I have a few top tips to make things go as smoothly as possible. For cats, make sure you can keep

them indoors from dusk onwards – if you work late, keep them in all day at this worrying time of year – an extra litter tray and dish of dry complete food, along with a scratching post to spare your chairs and a bowl of fresh water, will ensure they don’t miss their forays outside for the few days they need to stay in. For dogs, rescued pets and those breeds that are most sensitive to noise will need the most TLC. Being there for your pet can help, but if you’re taking the family to a fireworks display then leaving your dog in a

Woodlands Logs & Kindling DELIVERED LOCALLY 0844 4141174 20

familiar room with toys and their bed and putting the radio on to mask the sudden whistles and bangs will help. Make sure you’ve walked your dog before dark, as leaving a stressed pet with a full bladder won’t make anyone happy. If your dog gets in a real state, like my Border Collie, think ahead about the best way to protect them from themselves. Speak to your vet about methods to calm your pet, and look at the possibility of using a suitably sized puppy crate to keep them safe and prevent them harming themselves or your home, whilst the display is going on nearby.

GARDENING THIS MONTH...

Stocking up on nature’s berried treasures The leaves are giving us a delightful show before they fall, the first winter frosts are making their presence known and the berried shrubs and trees are looking delightful, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Nature is busy producing food for the birds and a feast for the eyes.

The Rowans (Mountain Ash) are heavy with berries and there are hips forming on the hedgerow roses. Nature is getting ready for winter by producing a larder for the needy because berries are more than just seed containers - they are potential life-savers in the colder weather. So that’s why gardeners should be

more than happy that many colourful shrubs and trees are going to become things of beauty and a source of food for the birds. Cotoneasters - blackbirds are drawn to their tiny berries and they make excellent garden shrubs. Those rowans waxwings (pictured), redwings, fieldfares and even flocks of starlings go crazy for their fruits. Yew, while poisonous to many animals, doesn’t seem to worry birds, and even ivy (when it’s mature and sets

fruit) and holly are known to provide a nutritional meal. Viburnum opulus or Guelder Rose (pictured), seen occasionally in gardens and more often as part of a mixed hedge, produces waxy-red, acidic-tasting fruit which is acceptable to birds when there’s little left on the dining table. Plants don’t produce berries for fun – they produce them to propagate their species, and they rely heavily on birds to help. Birds eat the berries which contain seeds; the seeds pass through the birds and are dispensed around the countryside. So, the plants, the birds and the countryside all benefit. And, of course, so do we! This is why gardeners should grow at least a couple of fruiting shrubs or trees to provide a valuable food source for wildlife, shelter for birds and insects – and interest in the garden at what is normally the darkest and dullest time of the year. And if there’s room, how about a mixed native hedge? It won’t be a pruned and arrow-straight barrier, but it will be an inviting and calorific place for birds, small mammals and insects. Consider planting Blackthorn (pictured here rubbing shoulders with Hawthorn), Viburnum, Spindle, Wild Rose with its attendant hips, a small Mountain Ash and Elder with

one or two hollies thrown in. The ideal time for establishing all these plants is now and into late winter using either bare-rooted young seedlings or transplants as this is more economical than buying pot grown plants. However, some plants such as Hollies need to be pot grown. Other tasks this month … • There's still time to plant Daffodil bulbs and other spring flowering bulbs for a magnificent start to next year’s display. Remember the bulb planting rule: work out the planting depth by roughly measuring the bulb from base to tip and doubling or tripling this length – this figure is the rough planting depth. For example, a 5cm (2in) high bulb should be 1015cm (4-6in) below soil level according to the Royal Horticultural Society. • Start to plant bare-root and root-wrapped roses they can be planted any time between now and March, but the sooner the better. • Continue to lift Dahlia and Begonia tubers, and Gladioli corms to store dry over the winter months. Remove any dead foliage prior to storage.

• Cut back the yellowing foliage of herbaceous perennials, and lift and divide overcrowded clumps to maintain their vigour. • Divide mature clumps of Rhubarb once they are dormant.

• Place a scaffold plank on the ground along the main access route into the plot to allow access without compacting the soil as you walk across it. • Build a raised bed or two to take some of the bending out of vegetable growing. • Stake top-heavy brassicas and draw up some soil around the base of the stems to prevent the wind

rocking the plant and causing damage to the roots. • Now is the ideal time to plant Currant bushes – Black, Red and White whilst they are dormant. • Apply fruit tree grease or Boltac Grease bands to the trunks of fruit trees to prevent wingless female winter moths climbing the trunks and laying their eggs in the branches. • Take hardwood cuttings of deciduous shrubs (eg Dogwoods, Ribes and Forsythia), climbers (eg Honeysuckle, Vitis, pictured and Jasminium) and trees (eg Planes, Poplar and Willows) and place them in a sheltered spot outdoors or in the cold frame to take root. The cuttings need to be 9in (23cm) long and pencil thickness and they can be grown in pots, a cold frame or in a border.

Time to get recycling November is certainly the month for garden recycling and perhaps the best time to set up a new compost heap! Here are a few pointers to compost success! Find the right site ideally site your compost bin in a reasonably sunny site on bare soil. If you have to put your compost bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs ensure there's a layer of paper and twigs or existing compost on the bottom so the worms and other creatures can colonise. Choose a place where you can easily add ingredients to the bin and get the compost out. Add the right ingredients - have a container available such as a kitchen caddy or old ice cream tub

so that you can collect items for your compost bin from all over the house. Fill your kitchen caddy or container with everything from vegetable and fruit peelings to teabags, the contents from your vacuum cleaner, toilet roll tubes, cereal boxes and eggshells. Take care not to add cooked food, meat or fish as these will attract vermin. Fill it up - empty your kitchen caddy along with your garden waste into your compost bin. The perfect recipe for a good compost is a 50/50 mix of “greens” i.e soft materials and “browns” i.e harder or more fibrous materials. “Greens” include grass cuttings, vegetable peelings, salad leaves and fruit scraps, old flowers and nettles, coffee grounds and filter paper, spent bedding plants, Rhubarb leaves and young annual weeds e.g. chickweed. “Browns” include crushed egg shells, egg and

cereal boxes, corrugated cardboard and paper (scrunched up), toilet and kitchen roll tubes, garden prunings, twigs and hedge clippings, straw and hay, bedding from vegetarian pets, ashes from wood, paper and lumpwood charcoal, sawdust and wood chippings, wool, woody clippings, cotton threads and string (made from natural fibre), feathers, vacuum bag contents, old natural fibre clothes (cut into small pieces), tissues, paper towels and napkins, shredded confidential documents and corn cobs and stalks. All this makes the perfect recipé for good compost. Wait a while - it takes between 9-12 months for your compost to become ready for use, so now all you need

Vincent Landscapes of Buckingham

to do is wait and let nature do the work. Keep on adding greens and browns to top up your compost. Ready for use - once your compost has turned into a crumbly, dark material, resembling thick, moist soil and gives off an earthy, fresh aroma, you know it's ready to use. Removing the compost - lift the bin slightly or open the hatch at the bottom and scoop out the fresh compost with a garden fork, spade or trowel. Use it - don't worry if your compost looks a little lumpy with twigs and bits of eggshells - this is perfectly normal. Use it to enrich borders and vegetable patches, plant up patio containers or carefully sieved to feed the lawn.
