Family Focus
Your Weekend Workforce!
We all love a prize, a bonus or an incentive, and it’s also a rewarding way to parent; to involve children in little tasks around the home in return for treats, pocket money or stars on a chart. Children of all ages can be involved in keeping things tidy, even if it’s simply clearing away their toys, and if parents are working long hours, it can be very useful, too! Motivating kids to help out around the home and garden is nothing new – don’t we all remember that list of chores to complete at weekends, before we could go out to play or watch TV – but helping them realise the value of money and the fun of saving for something they really want, is beneficial in many ways. Your child will understand working as part of a team, their own ability to contribute to running their home, and the value of money and hard work, in a nurturing way and at a young age. 4
There are a few points to making this a success: Explain the scheme to your child, in a way that they’ll understand – pictures or looking at a coin and describing the task that will earn it, makes it real
•
• Look at what they may wish to
save for, and perhaps make a progress chart, showing in a visual way, how soon they will have saved enough
•
Make the tasks age-appropriate and achievable
•
Set the reward at a sensible level for the task, so that savings targets can be accessibly reached
•
Make sure all carers know the value of a task, and reward accordingly
• Decide in advance whether
rewards can be ‘fined’ for bad behaviour, or whether it
will be a purely praise-based reward system, and stick to this throughout

Pets Corner This month’s topic is a very important one if you have pet dogs and small children in your home – and it’s all about something animal behaviourists call Calming Signals.
Calming Signals are subtle signs that your dog uses to show how it feels, to other dogs and any humans that know how to read them. They may suggest it is inwardly stressed and trying to handle a situation without resorting to their instinctive behaviour, and will usually be shown long before a dog snaps, growls or reacts in another obviously upset or aggressive manner. To spot the signs, you need to 10
know your dog, and what their relaxed and happy behaviour looks like. Little gestures, such as blinking, yawning and changes in posture, can give away how your dog feels, and if you have small children around the home, then it’s important to know your dog is getting stressed so that you can intervene.
Since qualifying in Animal Behaviour, I have seen so many photos and videos shared by friends, where their toddlers have dressed the family dog in a hat, or where little children are lying on their pet and cuddling it – and the dog’s expression and mannerisms
where there are subtitles to
let you spot the micro-gestures the dog is making.
suggest that a nasty bite is not too far away. Dogs are not toys, they are descended from predatory carnivores, which have been domesticated over many thousands of generations, to become an accepted part of the household, a faithful friend and a highly trained worker in many complex environments.
Please take a moment to read more, and take a look at video clips, which will show you what to look out for, to enable your family and your muchloved pets to live happily and continue to enhance each other’s lives.

Serendipity for Spring
This Spring, make more time for you! Be that person you want to be – stop putting off any changes you’d like to make for the better, and embrace them, to revitalise yourself and refresh your life for the new season. • Give up smoking – this takes willpower and determination, but the health and financial benefits are so worthwhile. You’ll save so much money, and put extra years on your life, not to mention the improvement in the smell of your home and clothes. • Get in shape, don’t go on a diet – being the best version of you, means not being a slave to the scales. Different people, different shapes. What matters most is that you get healthier and happier – that’s not about being skinny and starving, it’s about get-
12
ting more exercise and eating less junk – sounds simple, but old habits are the hardest to break. If you buy processed packaged food, that’s what you’ll eat, so shop smart, walk more and you’ll look and feel better.
• Learn to love yourself – we’re all different, but all that really matters is to love, and be loved, and live every day the very best we can. No money can buy any of these things, it’s all
about finding that peace within yourself, and loving who you are. If that means you need to change your job to reduce stress, or delegate more tasks to others, do it now, don’t struggle on regardless.

Dr. Claire Guest with Daisy
Plant a daisy and help The Medical Detection Dogs!
Buckingham Garden Centre’s chosen charity for 2016 is the Great Horwood based Medical Detections Dogs. As part of our fundraising and awareness of this amazing charity we are donating 10p for every garden plant which belongs to the daisy family (Asteracaea), including pot grown Cosmos, sold through this year. Why daisy? The dog that really helped to launch the charity is owned by Dr. Claire Guest, one of the founders of the Medical Detection Dogs Charity, whose name is Daisy (pictured), so Daisy is the Garden Centre’s theme for fundraising this year. As well 14
as the money from plant sales, you are able to donate in our Wishing Well or collection boxes or take part in our Tombola and other fundraising events throughout the year.

Monthly Words
Were you aware, according to the Global Language Monitor, that there are in excess of 1,000,000 words in the English language?
Those of us with a reasonable
standard of education proba-
bly have a vocabulary of
around 45,000 but we rarely
use more than a thousand in
our day to day lives.
The average teenager only
uses about 800 as much of
their communication is done
with “textspeak” and of
course the “in” words recog-
nised by their peers.
How much more colourful and
enriched would our lives be by
occasionally bringing to the
fore a few words so long for-
gotten. When Stephen Fry is in
full flight I often have to rush
to the dictionary even though
the context generally conveys
the meaning. 18
May I be so bold as to suggest
we try to inject a few forgotten
words into our daily conversa-
tions.
I issue this challenge ….. engi-
neer the following into your
next chat at the local or when-
“pulchritudinous”
having great beauty.
Or my favourite, a little risqué
I dare say..
“callipygian”
having beautiful buttocks!
ever friends are present
“guddle”…………………
(on-a-mat-a-pee-a)
E-mail and let me know how
“onomatopoeia”
A word which imitates the
sound it represents. E.g. hiss,
bonk, fizz or plop.
tell you next month, arf arf !!
you get on or even better, sug-
gest some of your favourite
“obscure” words for our read-
ers delight and delectation…
..obviously nothing indecent if
you don’t mind, that would
defeat the object.

TRAVELING HUNDREDS OF MILES EVERY WEEK
Many of us have a car, and may travel hundreds of miles each week, but very few cars contain the emergency items that could get you, or someone else, out of a jam. Severe weather, an unexpected breakdown, or happening upon the scene of an accident can all require items that can be bought quite cheaply and could save a life, or enable you to complete your journey as planned. In many European countries, it’s a legal requirement to carry emergency kit – the contents may differ depending on
20
the country, but a basic kit is just common sense, so here are our recommendations: First Aid kit Blanket Torch Essential toolkit Spare fuses and bulbs – headlights, sidelights, indicator, stop & tail Emergency warning triangle Reflective tabard / jacket Small amount of money Tow rope Hand warmers – the kind that heat up when you ‘pop’ them
This can all be bought for as little as £25 - £30, and bulky items stored in a bag under the seat or in the boot, ready for use if needed. Keep the torch and first aid items in the glove box, ready for immediate use when needed, and then you’re prepared, whatever your journey may bring.

of growing your own from seed is not just the money you save but the much wider choice of varieties.
Creating the perfect daisy chain With lovely ferny foliage and elegant blooms in any colour you like which will keep on flowering for months on end, Cosmos are just out of this world, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day.
This is the season for daisies of all kinds but one of my favourites, at this or any time of year, is Cosmos - in all its glorious forms. It’s also a special year for the Cosmos as it’s been awarded the grand accolade of ‘Flower of the Year’ 2016!
Over the years I have grown three different types of Cosmos, two of which are annuals and have to be re-sown every spring and one, Cosmos atrosanguineus, which has a tuber and can survive for years with a little loving care.
22
The two annuals are Cosmos bipinnatus and Cosmos sulphureus. Both are native to Mexico and South America, and both are tender annuals, so will only withstand the lightest touch of frost.
I sow both in seed trays in March and April, pricking the seedlings out into cell plugs or individually into pots and planting them out when the last hint of frost has gone.
You can, of course, buy young plants, although one of the beauties
The two varieties of C. bipinnatus that I like best are the tall white ‘Purity’ and the plum-coloured ‘Dazzler’, which changes its colour as it fades to a magenta shade of pink.
‘Purity’ works well in my garden because it will reach 1.2m (4ft) tall, so it can be placed in amongst perennials and appear through their growth, but if you want a shorter variety for the front of the border you might want to try ‘Sonata’. We often sell this as a flowering plant in a 1 or 2-litre pot in the early summer as it makes a perfect gap filler.
Look out for Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Xanthos’ when next looking through the seed packets this spring. Xanthos means yellow in Greek and that’s what this new Cosmos bipinnatus is all about: it is a
unique, soft, stunning yellow. ‘Xanthos’ is dwarf, early flowering, uniform and yellow making a lovely feature plant for the garden. This rich-flowering Cosmos is ideally suited for the patio and terrace and is a true eye catcher in the border. Xanthos adds a completely new colour to the compact Cosmos range. It has already received awards as its colour is a breakthrough in breeding! Cosmos sulphureus ‘Bright Lights’ always performs well, even in a damp squid of a summer. I have had it in containers as well as borders and it is equally at home in both. ‘Bright Lights’ has a small, orange flowers with a central boss which, if dead-headed regularly, carry on blooming for months and months. Interestingly Cosmos atrosanguineus derives its Latin name from its colour of dried blood – but the plant’s popular name, chocolate cosmos, comes from its incredible chocolate fragrance. The flowers are small jewels of the richest, deepest burgundy held on long slender stems and are among the rightful royalty of the plant world.
They are not hardy and if you leave them in your borders over winter there is a real chance they will be killed by a
sharp frost, or rot in cold wet soil. I would recommend treating them exactly like dahlias.
As soon as the first frost blackens the leaves, cut off the stems and foliage, lift them, remove all
soil from the roots and dry them for a few days in a frost-free shed or greenhouse.
Then pack the tubers in pots or a seed tray in vermiculite or potting compost and put them somewhere dark and cool. You do not want them to dry out completely, so check them every few weeks and lightly dampen them.
In March, take the tubers out, carefully check that they’re not shrivelled or rotten, and then pot them up individually and place

them in a warm, bright spot to stimulate growth. Gradually harden them off before planting them out after the last frost.
Finally, you might come across a form of Cosmos atrosanguineus called ‘Chocamocha’ on your travels. It is a variety we sell and it has much more compact qualities so is perfect to have in a pot, say close by a door where you can enjoy its delicious chocolate scent. Who says growing flowers isn’t fun!
