There’s so much talk in the news lately, about childhood obesity, poor nutrition and seemingly a new food-related health scare every week, so what should we be feeding our smallest children, to keep them happy and healthy? Despite the chaos of conflicting advice, the reality is pretty simple. Under fives have small tummies, so they need to eat little and often. Three yummylooking, healthy meals a day and a nutritious snack or two will provide everything they need to grow at the super-fast rate that little ones do, whilst giving them energy to play, learn and have fun. Make mealtimes a social occasion by eating alongside your child; talking about their day, demonstrating your enjoyment of a range of foods, and helping them learn to use cutlery with care and enjoy independent eating.
•
Fruits and vegetables are very important for all of us, and choosing a selection of colours each day will ensure your child’s 4
five – or seven – portions provide plenty of vitamins and micronutrients. Healthy is good, but don’t think low fat faddy diet when you’re feeding toddlers - they get important energy from healthy fats, and it’s far better for their calories to come from this source than from sugars. Full-fat milk until they’re five is a good rule, and cubes of cheese or little pots of yogurt are always popular.
•
•
Protein is also vital, to provide the fundamental ingredients needed for growing, and building bright brains and strong muscles.
•
Calcium and Vitamin D help little bones grow, so eating and drinking dairy products, fortified bread and breakfast cereals and spending time playing outside are essential for building healthy toddlers.
•
Cheese-topped baked beans on toast, chopped chicken breast on home made pizza with little chunks
of cucumber and tomato, or tuna and sweetcorn sandwiches are all good balanced lunches for little people, providing excellent sources of protein and are inexpensive to make.
• Drinks for little ones need to be
mainly milk or water, or very well-diluted squash or fruit juices – fizzy and sugary drinks will reduce their appetite for nutritious foods and cause tooth decay, so are best avoided or kept as a rare treat.

Pets Corner
Compulsory Chipping – what it means for your dog
Many of us already have our pets microchipped, to ensure they can be returned to us if they stray or are stolen, but now it’s become compulsory for all dogs in England..
From 6th April, all dogs and puppies must be microchipped, and their details added to one of the approved databases, by the time they are 8 weeks old, or there will be large fines imposed for non-compliance.
The Government’s aim is to ensure responsible pet ownership, with all dogs easily identifiable, owners traceable when pets stray and instances of animal cruelty more easily prosecuted.
Puppies must be chipped and registered with their breeder’s details, before going to their 10
new homes, so that there will be full lifetime traceability for all dogs in England.
If your pet already has a microchip, but the registered details on the database may not be up to date - perhaps they’re in the name of the previous owner, or you’ve moved address recently – then this needs updating by 6th April.
If your dog doesn’t have a chip, and you are worried about the cost of this, then a number of animal charities are running schemes, chipping dogs free of charge for those on certain benefits.
If this doesn’t apply to your circumstances, then the cost of
After the 6th April a £500 fine can be issued chipping at your local vet’s is typically between £20 and £40, and this includes the paperwork necessary to register the chip number with your details and those of your pet, on one of the approved databases.
If your dog is found to be without a microchip after 6th April, a notice will be issued, requiring a chip to be implanted and registered within 21 days; failure to comply will result in a £500 fine.

Glamorous
The appearance of a few grey hairs used to cause panic, plucking or a dash for the dye, but not any more! The very shade which caused such consternation is now glamorous and something to be proud of – and it looks great!
The age at which we start to notice those few tell-tale silver hairs, often around the temples, can vary; but by our mid-forties, most of us have developed a little of the ‘salt & pepper’ look.
With the advance of celebrities ditching the dye and showing off their silver styles with pride, more of us feel happy to be ourselves, and perhaps change our style, but keep the colour. Nobody would deny that Richard Gere and Helen Mirren look
greys
completely fabulous, and so can you!
If you’re still not convinced, and feel
that grey really isn’t your thing just now, there are the usual options of temporary and permanent hair dyes, to create a uniform shade and hide your ‘silver highlights’. Regular washing and root regrowth means
that you will need a top-up or complete re-colour every six weeks or so, depending on the product. An alternative, which may be a little pricier initially, is to speak to your hairdresser about going ‘gently grey’ and soften your natural highlights, by blending with highlighted and lowlighted colours, which can last about six months before a repeat is needed. The shades, amount and way in which the colours are applied can be varied to suit you, enabling some of your greys to stay, as an asset to your style. Whichever you choose – camouflage or coverage, silver or another shade – wear it with pride; choose a style to suit your face shape and hair type and enjoy looking fabulous!

Foodies
Springtime dining
With the recent school holidays, lighter evenings and warmer weather, the barbecue has made an early appearance in my garden. Every time we cook alfresco, there are the usual burned-on-the-outside, raw-in-the-middle offerings, which has led me to compile a few top tips:
Get the BBQ out for a Spring clean, well before you want to use it; if it’s gas, fire it up, and give the whole thing a jolly good scrub - burn off any grotty bits from last year, and create a clean space to char things, 2016 style!
Buy a pair of long-handled BBQ tongs and a meat probe – possibly the best bits of kit you can invest in. Tongs prevent the burned fingers / dropped burger incidents, and a temperature probe will 18
ensure food is cooked through before you serve it to guests – the thickest part of burgers, chops and sausages must reach a minimum of 75°C; aim for 83°C for poultry.
Think about pre-cooking first – if you’re barbecuing chicken or thicker cuts of meat, why not cook it in the oven first, unless you have a gas BBQ with variable heat. Some meats can be dangerous if they’re done on the outside, but the middle is insufficiently cooked through, and you can still add that BBQ flavour with a few minutes on the barbie!
Avoid cross-contamination – keep raw meats and cooked food or salads separate, and wash hands (or use sanitising hand gels if that’s not possible) after handling raw meat
Be inventive with recipe ideas – foods which are more delicate can be barbecued if they’re wrapped in foil, so why not cook your fish and vegetables to perfection, outdoors.
Using common sense, good food hygiene and a meat probe in combination, ensures that nobody will get ill from eating barbecued food. These few simple checks become second nature, and mean that everyone will enjoy their meal and stay safe.

At this time of year many fair weathered gardeners are cajoled into buying colourful outdoor plants. Here Chris Day from Buckingham Garden Centre provides some advice on half a dozen good doers you and your garden really shouldn’t be without. The warmer weather of April is time to get out, plan, discuss, evaluate, shop and make your mark in the garden. Selecting plants is great fun and it should be a good experience. Armed with the knowledge of your garden plot – aspect, sun, shade, plus your own personal requirements on flower
Singing the praises of shrubs
colour, scent, evergreen interest, it should make selecting plants relatively simple. Plants purchased from garden centres should be labelled to provide all the questions you need answering – what height and spread does it grow to; when does it flower; what colour are the flowers; how long does it flower for; is it repeat-flowering; does it produce berries or have interesting autumn colour/winter features? Before the birth of the internet, tablet and smart phone, to answer these questions you would need a rucksack to carry around Reader’s Digest Encyclopaedia of Plants or
the RHS version over two volumes! The weighty tomes were your reference points – however today with a click or swipe of a screen you can access plant information at your fingertips. So, which plants should you choose? Certainly there is a range of reliable ‘bread and butter’ shrubs which every garden should have, so let’s look at them more closely. These we would instantly class as ‘dual purpose plants’, species and varieties that provide added value to your garden and provide you with a good return for your investment.

First through the gate is the versatile Photinia (below). This evergreen shrub produces wonderful foliage red tinged in the spring as the new growth develops. As a bushy large shrub or small tree it makes a wonderful display. There are many variants on the market; I suppose ‘Red Robin’ (RHS Award of Garden Merit) is the one you are most likely to come across, however the newer variety Photinia ‘Crunchy’ takes this plant to a new level. The young shoots, copper at first, take on an unusual chocolate shade, and then turn dark green. It can be used as a freestanding shrub or used as an effective hedge line. Remember the more often you cut the plants back once the leaves have become green the more colourful foliage is generated! It is fast-growing and once it settles down and matures you can also expect white flowers in late spring fol-
lowed by red berries. It pretty quickly attains 2m in height with a similar spread if allowed to, but remember the regular cut-backs will provide you with lots of colour from the developing new foliage. Left to its own devices the plant can grow up to 4m in all directions, so be prepared to use the secateurs if it grows out of its allocated space! We would recommend this variety as its colouring is more subtle than the familiar ‘Red Robin’, and the wavy edged leaves are an added attraction. Cotinus, the aptly named Smoke Bush, is a favourite of many gardeners. While this plant is often grown for its rather unusual smoky, frothy-like panicles of flowers in midsummer which create a smoky soft haze, its foliage is also spectacular. Smoke Bush can be grown as a large shrub, but it is best when cut back each year once it’s mature. Depending on the variety, the leaves can be burgundy, green, or chartreuse. The best for deep burgundy colour and overall B.B.B vigour is the popHome and Garden Property Maintenance ular ‘Royal Purple’ (RHS Interior & Exterior * Painting & Decorating AGM) and that’s Home Improvements * Garden Renovation the one to look out Projects for on your All aspects of gardening travels. Amelanchier height and spread. This plant can be coppiced back in the spring (cut back hard) if necessary to help produce more dramatic foliage but at the expense of the flowers, it depends
what you want to grow it for! Not all the must-have shrubs are necessarily evergreen. Take the ever so versatile Amelanchier lamarckii (RHS AGM), sometimes called the June Berry. This large shrub/small tree produces leaves that open coppery-red, turning to
Amelanchier lamarckii
soft green in summer and then to shades of red, orange and yellow in autumn. In spring the plants are covered in white flowers which set against the coppery foliage look stunning, then black edible berries, loved by blackbirds, follow on in June. By far, this is one of the most useful wildlife friendly plants you are likely to come across. Vital measurements – 3m high x 3m spread in 20 years or it is perfect for growing as a hedges 1.21.8m high. If you have a shady spot in the garden (and who doesn’t!) there are couple of plants which could be included in your wish-list. The spotted Laurel, Aucuba japonica ‘Crotonifolia’ (pictured right) (RHS AGM) doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, however it does provide a wonderful, brightly variegated shrub for your garden. The leathery leaves are quite large, in fact at first sight you do feel you are looking at a member of the popular laurel family, however that’s where the similarity ends. It belongs to the same family as the beautifully tasselled
Garrya elliptica, the evergreen catkin forming wall shrub. This plant is worthy for inclusion to our must-have list also, especially if you are looking for a dramatic winter interest shrub. Going back to the Aucuba, it does have flowers, albeit small purple and relatively insignificant, but you cannot say that about the developing berries – big and bright red when pollinated. It makes a rounded shrub some 1.52.5m in height and spread and can be pruned to shape.

The other worthy shade lover, which will be also fine in full sun, is the Fatsia japonica (RHS AGM), sometimes incorrectly labelled as the Castor Oil plant. This plant is often described as an architectural plant, being big leaved it certainly creates a bit of a stir where planted. However, it’s a delight to grow, and as indicated by its name it’s a native of Japan. This handsome foliage plant likes our climate and will grow and expand up to a couple of metres tall and wide. In a cold winter the frost can be a problem, so be prepared to fleece over it. That said, the worst that usually happens is the odd leaf becomes damaged and blackened or the growing point is damaged. However the plant is usually robust
enough to re-grow with even more vigour. Is this a dual purpose plant? Well, yes it does flower, often in the depth of winter when you are least expecting it! The creamy white almost spherical flowers are produced in clusters; although not especially long lasting they can create a nice ‘wow’ factor in your garden. If the Fatsia simply becomes too large simply cut it hard back in the spring and just like the phoenix from the ashes it will grow back quickly.
wind. However, if you can establish a bed with acid-loving plants then acers really can make your garden come to life. It’s the amazing variety of leaf shape, myriad of colour, form, both as the leaves begin to emerge in the spring and the firework display they provide come
The last plant I’d like to mention is the Japanese Maples – the Acers. Now if your soil is limey its best to grow these in pots, ideally in dappled shade out of the

autumn. If you want to grow one in a pot then opt for a well sized pot – at least 45cm in diameter and use lime-free ericaceous compost. Make sure the pot has
sufficient drainage at the base and be prepared to keep the plant well watered and feed regularly over the summer. Acers in pots grow quickly, so don’t let them become stressed out! Which variety to plant? My best advice would be to come and see the plants as they come into leaf in late April/early May and I guarantee you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Barton’s Hospital Almshouses Church Street
Fund-raising is well underway with over seventy per cent of the projected costs now raised for the extension and refurbishment of the Barton’s Hospital Almshouses in Church Street, Buckingham.
Buckingham Welfare Charities [Reg. No. 269332] which manages the accommodation, successfully updated and refurbished Christ’s Hospital Almshouses in the town centre in 2014. The trustees now wish to do the same for the Church Street almshouses, extending the properties to create six one bedroom apartments to replace the current six bedsits, which will meet all modern standards particularly in relation to energy efficiency.
These almshouses were founded in 1431 by John Barton (Senior, the elder of two brothers both called John), a successful lawyer.
The accommodation housed six poor persons who would be given a groat a week. After the Dissolution, they were reinstated by Mrs Dayrel, whose family had probably acquired them from the Crown. They were rebuilt in 1701, and the current building dates from the late 19th century, with an inscription stone dating them from 1910. These properties have been extended in a piecemeal fashion since then. They remain available to six local persons in need and the trustees seek to provide them as truly affordable housing.
Buckingham has a long history of almshouse provision. Christ’s Hospital was reinstated by Queen Elizabeth I in 1597, and is situated near the site of St Lawrence Hospital, which was probably a facility for lepers, dating from 1312. Christ’s Hospital appears to have been funded
by the wool trade of the town and its two fairs.
The trustees would welcome expressions of interest in helping to continue this tradition – more details can be found on the website: www.buckinghamgeneralcharities.or g.uk.
