Welcome... APRIL 2019 ISSUE
The aim of the monthly Life in Buckingham Magazine is to support businesses in order that the local community can flourish. It seems just moments since New Year, but here we are – well into Spring, with the garden awakened after its Winter break and lively lambs in the fields, enjoying the warm sunshine. With Easter falling so late this year, the weather is perfect for enjoying the great outdoors during the school holidays. We have some super activities to keep the kids amused, as well as the usual offers, features and all the local information you could need. So - read on and enjoy, and we’ll see you in May! Until next time…..

Easter holiday activities that won’t break the bank With a fortnight off school to fill and in the hope of making lovely memories rather than tearing my hair out by Day 2, this time I have vowed to be prepared. The usual pattern of school holidays runs a little like this – Day 1: awake filled with optimism, stuff deliciously nutritious breakfast into the dear offspring and dash off to the first of many exciting and well-planned activities. By teatime, the house is in chaos, the gin bottle beckons and all my enthusiasm has pretty much evaporated, so the little darlings go back to their Gadgets with Screens and I spend the rest of the week breaking up fights and stepping on Lego. If your little darlings are aged between 5 and 12, teaming up with other families to share the parenting and getting all the kids outdoors is probably the best way to stay sane, wear them out and let them do fun stuff that is noisy and messy but will keep them happy and not realising that they’re actually learning things. Like climbing trees, making mud pots, building a den: things we used to do as kids, nothing that costs a lot except in the million loads of washing afterwards. If it rains, add waterproof trousers, coats and wellies and they can build a shelter and eat their lunch in it. Here are some of the ideas I’ve planned for quieter moments:
• Cress Eggheads – scoop a soft-boiled egg out of the shell, leaving a cup shape which you fill with compost or damp kitchen roll, and scatter some cress seeds on top. The kids can draw a face on their egg, sit it in on the kitchen windowsill in an egg cup or cut-down loo roll tube, and watch the cress ‘hair’ grow in a few days’ time. • Giant beanstalk – damp kitchen roll again, this time in a jam jar, and add a broad bean seed at one side. Keep it watered but not soggy and in a few days, the seed will be sprouting roots and a shoot, and the ‘giant beanstalk’ will appear – once it’s peeping out of the top of the jar, tip it out and plant in a larger pot or the garden, and watch it grow your own beans! • Indoor den – ideal for smaller kids and when you just don’t fancy washing any more muddy clothes! Oldfashioned clothes airers are best for this, but kitchen chairs are just as good. You’ll need a couple of large old sheets or tablecloths and some clothes pegs. Drape the sheets over the furniture and peg in place, and the kids can sit in their den and share a picnic, or if it’s dark they can use torches and tell scary stories! They’ll spend most of the time modifying the design and re-draping the sheets, but it’s definitely lots of fun and will keep them entertained for a while.

bit beyond mending are going to be cut up for the craft box – they’re great for patchwork, applique or making bunting. • Old mobile phones are going to be recycled – the more modern ones are worth trading in, but even ancient ones – if they’re working - can be sent to charities and benefit others. • All those old glossy lifestyle magazines are going to the local pre-school, to be cut up for crafts. They can also use kitchen roll tubes, margarine tubs and chocolate boxes, for junk modelling activities. • Those lovely clothes from last Summer’s wardrobe, which have mysteriously shrunk in the loft, are going to the local hospice’s charity shop. • An old pair of long leather boots, worn through near the sole and looking fit for the bin – are going to be cut up to make a funky bag – thanks to an idea from YouTube! • Old fleeces and fluffy jumpers will make amazing new cushion covers – just cut across below the armholes and turn inside out, stitch along this line to fix the front to the back, then add buttons, a zip or Velcro to fasten the bottom of the jumper. The end result – a clearer, cleaner, funkier looking home and that great feeling that nothing has been wasted – what’s not to like?!

Every year, at the start of April, I get the Spring cleaning jitters. Whether it’s the lighter, brighter days which show up every speck of dust and the paintwork that could do with a fresh coat, or maybe it’s fetching my Summer clothes down from the loft – every year, I get the decluttering bug! This year, I’m going to be ruthless – but nothing that has any life in it will be thrown away; the plan is to make everything we no longer need, benefit someone else or serve a new purpose. • The children’s outgrown clothes, shoes and toys are heading off to a local women’s refuge charity. • Old crockery, cookware and glasses are going to another local charity, which helps the homeless when they’ve been found somewhere to live. • Packets, tins and jars of food, which are in date and unopened but may have been sitting in the cupboard for a while, are going to our local food bank. They need donations more than ever during school holidays, when the free lunches, milk and fruit that benefit very low-income families aren’t available, so more hungry kids need to be fed. • Clothes which are made from pretty fabrics but look a

The importance of seeking legal advice when making a will The Law Commission reported that around 40% of people don’t have wills. Due to changing patterns in family life such as partners cohabiting or having second families making a will is becoming ever more important. Unfortunately, even when a will is made problems can arise if it is not drafted carefully. Many people believe a DIY will, will be cheap, however if it is incorrectly drafted, the cost to a person’s estate can far outweigh the initial cost had they gone to a professional. Problems may arise as a result of mistakes in the drafting of the will, the meaning of the will being unclear, or issues with the execution of the will. The Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) have been reported to suggest that ‘poorly drafted or ineffective DIY wills are to blame for a prolonged probate ordeal for 38,000 families a year’. This risks leaving a legacy of financial and
emotional strain plus potentially higher legal and tax bills. Even when consulting a professional, be aware that anyone can be a ‘will writer’ without needing legal qualification or regulation. However, solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and must have indemnity insurance, which means that if anything goes wrong, you are protected. Making a will with a solicitor needn’t be expensive. At Spratt Endicott, the usual cost for making a single will is £250 plus VAT or £350 plus VAT for mirror wills. If you would like to discuss making, or updating your will please contact Emma Rolfe on 01869 222 315 or erolfe@se-law.co.uk.

Time to get cracking Taking a serious note from last year’s topsy turvy weather may help shape our gardens this summer, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. How is your garden faring this spring? Bulbs blooming nicely? The first cherry trees producing their wonderful confetti-like blooms? Lawn fed and treated? Sowings made in the veg plot? The lure of the garden at this time of the year can be so seductive, you often get drawn into it whatever the weather is doing. If you’ve just started to re-discover your patch then, as we approach Easter, it is a push to get things straight, in place and up and running for a productive season ahead. The relatively dry winter has been a bonus as it means we can get onto the soil and work it for sowing and planting. Now is the perfect
opportunity, especially if you are new too gardening to sow some hardy annuals in open sunny borders. These quick-fix plants will flower quickly from seed and provide you with generous colour right through to October. Good plants to sow include Pot Marigold (Calendula ), Cornflower (Centuara cyanus), California Poppy (Eschscholzia), Godetia, Baby’s Breath (Gypsophila), Larkspur, Love in a Mist (Nigella) and Poppy (Papaver) amongst others. You can buy mixed hardy annual seeds or simply select your favourites. The most important practical aspect for this project is the sowing. For successful germination you need a warm, damp soil. If daytime temperatures are around 16C then the earth will be adequately warm for good germination. Moisture levels aren’t a problem for some parts of the

county, and thankfully in recent days, we’ve had a very welcome 12mm of rainfall which has left Buckingham gardens in prime sowing conditions. Clear the area you wish to sow of unwanted vegetation and work over the soil with a fork. You then ideally want a dry, still, sunny, sowing day so that you can rake the soil surface to create a crumbly, not claggy, seedbed. Then either broadcast (scatter sow) your annual seeds, or sow in swathes or lines, depending on your chosen effect. Rake over gently and then water to help bed the seeds in. The resulting seedlings will grow on well over the next couple of months ready to flower profusely summer-long. Remember many of these annuals will generate seeds through the year which will naturally germinate the next year so providing some useful continuity to the border. Hardy annuals are generally pretty drought tolerant so if we have a repeat of last summer the plants should give a good display. If you have concerns over drought, then it would be useful to consider planting a selection of plants that will stand

dry growing conditions yet provide plenty of colour and interest such as Cosmos, Sunflowers (Helianthus) and Zinnia. Border plants: Try and establish a selection of plants including Abelia grandiflora, Cistus, Lavender (English and French), Rosemary, Russian Sage (Perovskia), Tree lupin (Lupin arboreus), Sedum spectabilis, Verbena bonariensis and Yucca filamentosa. Pots and Baskets: Good resilient subjects for your favourite containers should include Bidens, Diascia, Gazania, Helichrysum ‘Limelight’, Mesembryanthemum, Nemesia, Osteospermum (Pictures Above), Pelargonium and Verbena. Wildlife area: A wilder style has been helped along by the increasing use of instant wildflower meadows. It is relatively easy to recreate this look with a mix of herbaceous perennials and grasses that have a more permanent structure, helped by the increasing use of shrubs in planting borders. Good perennials to include which can cope with drought include Bergenia, Euphorbia, Eryngium, Echinops and Verbena including V. rigida and V. bonariensis. In the kitchen garden, quick and fast maturing vegetable crops can be sown now. Salad crops such as spring onions, lettuce, radish and round carrots can

be sown directly into well-prepared soil working in a little Growmore fertiliser at the time of sowing. Tender crops such as climbing French and Runner beans can be sown into Rootrainers or individually into 9cm pots or even in empty toilet roll centres so they can get a head start prior to planting them out in May. You need to give these light, frost-free conditions indoors, such as sunny windowsill, but do make sure the plants are regularly turned to encourage strong upright growth. There is still time to start off your potato tubers in readiness of planting later this month. If space is short you can easily grow a single potato tuber in a large pot using a peat-reduced multi-purpose compost. Ideally the pot should be no smaller than 30cm (12 inches) in diameter. Simply set the tuber deep in the pot and add a little compost at regular intervals as it develops covering every few weeks until you get to within a couple of inches of the top of the pot. Keep the compost moist and begin feeding six weeks after planting using a high potash-based fertiliser such as Tomorite or Doff Tomato Feed. Those stalwarts of summer colour - Dahlias - need to be planted in well prepared soil. We are talking establishing tubers here rather than plants, as its too early to plant the leafy plants just yet whilst there is still a danger of frost. Dahlias are sunlovers and give the best displays in soil improved with plenty of organic material, such as Tree Shrub and Rose Planting Compost together with a dusting of Vitax Q4. I like to soak the tubers for around 20 minutes before planting them and they need to be set just below the soil surface. Make sure the plant is marked with a small cane and label so you know where it is! As far as varieties, just like the seed merchants, dahlia growers produce wonderful colour photos to tempt us with. To achieve the best effect in your border do spend some time considering not only the eventual height but also flower types – there are many forms to choose from including single, cactus, semi cacti, collarette, decorative and pompon. Dahlias produce so much welcome colour right through into the autumn and if you give them a go you’ll be amply rewarded with colour and cut blooms.
