Shaveril – banning the beard for a great cause!

So, you’ve heard of Movember, when the clean-shaven suddenly look a little, well, different – and we sponsor their ‘taches for charity? Well, Shaveril is in one way the opposite, with the facial fuzziness coming off - but for an equally good cause! Gather your bearded family, friends and colleagues, and encourage them to sign up this month – because it’s all in aid of Mind, the mental health charity, and will raise money for this very good cause, whilst also allowing men everywhere to free their face from fuzz in time for Spring!

So, why link a mental health charity with beard shaving? Tragically, suicide is the leading cause of death in men under the age of 45, with this group also being those least likely to seek help for mental health issues. Just think for a moment – the main reason that men under 45 will die, is by taking their own life. By joining in with Shaveril, you’ll be raising allimportant funds for Mind, helping them to address this issue by providing accessible cont page 13

Beautiful Butterflies You know that Spring is really here when you see the first butterfly on a sunny day……but which varieties can we expect to spot in the garden this month? In our part of the UK, we can expect to see butterflies a few weeks earlier than more northerly parts – it’s all down to the rise in temperature, and we get warmer first! My favourites – the glorious Peacock and both Large and Small Tortoiseshells, are all out and about this month, along with – amongst others - the Red Admiral, Large and Small White, Speckled Wood and Holly Blue. You can expect to see them on bright Spring flowers or catkins, which provide an important source of food after their long winter in hibernation. Not all butterflies hibernate as adults – some will overwinter as a

8

chrysalis, and emerge as a new butterfly when the sun’s warmth tells them that Spring is here. Until the temperature rises and there are flowers in bloom to Peacock feed them, it’s best for them to stay dormant, using very little energy to stay alive. So, what can we do to attract butterflies and enjoy seeing them in the garden, through Spring and Summer? They need flowers in bloom throughout the season, from fruit tree blossom to buddleia, along with food plants for their caterpillars. A wildflower meadow area will provide the perfect habitat, and will also attract other wildlife to your garden. Stinging nettles, whilst a nuisance for gardeners, are a great place for many types of butterfly, such as the Peacock and Red Admiral, to

Red Admiral

lay their eggs and caterpillars to feed. So, plant more flowers, use fewer garden chemicals and leave an area overgrown and a few weeds to thrive – just my kind of gardening, and helps butterflies to flourish – sounds like an excellent plan to me!

Celebrate in April – there’

This month starts well, with a little light-heartedness – nobody can forget April Fools’ Day, when pranks abound until 12 noon on the first of the month! National newspapers do their best to persuade us that the most unlikely events have indeed happened, with flying penguins and spaghetti trees all over the news! The old rule that after noon, you’re the fool, still applies – thankfully limiting pranks to the morning, so we can relax a little after lunch. It’s all good fun, and certainly lightens the mood a little. A fortnight later, the mood is rather more sombre, with the Christian celebration of Easter – 14th is Good Friday, when Jesus was crucified, with Easter Sunday on 16th, when he rose from the dead to save all those who believe. Whether that’s your religion or not, we can all look forward to two Bank Holidays, so a very welcome break from the workplace, with several point-to-points held around the area and

’s something for everyone! plenty of other fun to be enjoyed over the long weekend.

On 23rd of the month, the celebrations are shared between the patron saint of England, St George, and the anniversary of the birth – and death – of William Shakespeare. It’s important to recognise both, as key parts of our national identity, so quite fitting that their day is shared. In Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare lived and died, there is the annual Birthday procession through the town, recognising the contribution made by this great man. In England, the flag of St George will be flown proudly, Jerusalem will be sung in churches around the country on the closest Sunday, and groups are campaigning for this day to become a national holiday again, as is the case with national saints’ days in other parts of the UK.

GARDENING THIS MONTH

Sweet April showers do spring May flowers The lengthening days, April showers, warm sunshine and with Easter just around the corner, now is the perfect time to set up the garden for summer, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Seeing the return of Monty Don and Gardeners’ World on the TV it’s a gentle reminder that there’s plenty to be thinking about in the garden this year. This is a special year for Gardeners’ World as it will be celebrating its 50th birthday. I think it’s reassuring that the programme’s ethos of the how, why and when we do certain gardening tasks is visually demonstrated by Monty and his band of experts each Friday evening. We’ve seen many gardening styles presented over the years by celebrities such as

Percy Thrower to Geoff Hamilton, Alan Titchmarsh to Toby Buckland, and many more inbetween, all giving their unique and personal take to those tasks that need to be done so we can get the best from our plots. So, without further ado, let’s get started …

As soon as the ground reaches 10°C and the dandelions (pictured) come into flower you can start to sow salad crops and annual herbs, such as Dill and Rocket. The same goes for hardy annuals, such as Larkspur, Nigella or the wildflower seed mixes. If your soil still feels cold lay some horticultural fleece directly over freshly sown seed to hold in the heat. Continue

to sow seed of half-hardy annuals under cover. Sow in small square pots rather than trays to save space, and prick out after the first true leaf is fully formed. A pinch of anything will be enough for most gardens, but larger seed such as Ipomoea (Morning Glory, pictured), Tagetes (Marigold) and Squash can be sown in pairs in 10cm pots. Never handle seedlings by the stem when pricking out. To avoid damage, gently grasp the first set of primary or seed leaves. Over-sow bald patches in the lawn and aim to keep off the grass for two to three months after germination. If you are turfing, this is the perfect time to do so. Work from boards to tamp the sods gently into place and spread your weight. Stagger the joints as you would bricks in a wall. If the weather is dry you may need to water to prevent curling at the edges. Feed established lawns with a slow-release organic fertiliser high in nitrogen to get things off to a good start. If you have a few weeds to deal with, why not opt for Evergreen® Complete 4in1 which selectively kills broadleaf weeds in the lawn, also moss and feeds the lawn. This product contains a unique

some plates of earlies. Line out then just plunge onion sets and shallots into ground that has been firmed and raked. They like soil manured the previous year. Until they have formed their first leaves and have got their roots down, net onions to prevent blackbirds pulling them free. Remember you can grow First and Second Early varieties of potatoes successfully in large pots and there’s still time to get these planted. Keep the successional sowings of salad crops such as Lettuce, Spring Onion, Radish and Spinach going, or invest in young veggie/herb plugs from the Garden Centre if only a few of each are required. Pull Rhubarb that has been growing away under forcers. Do not over-pick and remember to lift the forcer off as soon as you have had your fill to allow the plant its right to light, so it may replenish its resources for next year. You can also start planting new rhubarb crowns in larger pots for cropping next year. Cover blossom on wall-trained fruit if you hear of a frost warning. A layer of horticultural fleece will give the protection needed. Protection is also needed for your potato crops once they break ground - simply draw some soil over the emerging shoots to ‘earth-up’ the developing crop. Many of your evergreen herbs, such as Rosemary,

Lavender, Bay, Sage and Thyme (pictured), can be pruned now. Never cut into old wood and always leave enough foliage to help draw energy back into the limbs of the plants. Apply some general fertiliser such as Vitax Q4 or if you garden organically some Blood, Fish & Bone applied around the plants to give them a welcome boost. I prefer to stake any plants early on to let them grow into their support rather than wade into the beds when growth is up and fragile. Staking once the plants have put on growth is a fractious exercise and the plants always look bundled up if you stake too late – never a pretty site! I suppose in an ideal world one would only grow a handful of plants that need support, but in small gardens and where plants are drawn up to reach for light, more will be necessary. Hazel twigs are excellent, but steel hoops or garden canes are more easily installed. Make wigwams for Sweet Peas and climbing beans (Runner and French) using 2.4m (8ft) garden canes, or purchase decorative obelisks or willow frames to provide a perfect training framework. Plant Sweet Peas now, but beans must wait until the third week of May or later if the weather still hasn't warmed up.
