Buckingham Choral Society, Felix Mendelssohn Elijah on Saturday 2 Dec 2017, 7.30 pm at Buckingham Parish Church.

Mendelssohn’s Elijah is composed in the style of the great oratorios by Bach or Handel, but his highly dramatic style, at times bordering on the operatic, sets it apart from the Baroque predecessors. Mendellsohn wrote to a friend: ‘…the dramatic element should predominate.

The personages should act and speak as if they were living beings.’ Elijah was first performed in front an audience of 2000 people in Birmingham in August 1846 and immediately was an unprecedented success. It was without doubt the crowning point in Mendelssohn’s musical career. But it was also his last triumph, as his life was tragically cut short and he died the following year, only 38 years old. A

translation into Mendelssohn’s native German meant that Elijah continued to be popular with English and German speaking audiences ever since. Buckingham Choral Society will be supported by the highly acclaimed Orchestra of Stowe Opera and a cast of brilliant soloists from the Royal College of Music. The concert will be conducted by the Society’s Musical Director, Julian Mann.

Tickets: Adults: £13 advance, £15 on the door Under 18s: £5 Available from: Tourist Information Office, Old Gaol, Buckingham Online: www.wegottickets.com.

Living Together

An increasing number of people in England choose to live together rather than get married. Cohabiting couples are sometimes unaware of how differently from a married couple the law may treat them, if their relationship breaks down.

If a married couple splits up, the value of any property, pensions or bank accounts that they may have could be divided equally between them, no matter whose name those assets are actually in.

For cohabiting couples, however, the position is very different. For example, an unmarried couple might live in a house owned by one of them whilst the other might pay grocery or utility bills. If that couple were to split up, there would be no automatic right for them to share ownership of the house, even if they had lived there together for many years. The process for establishing a share in the house through the courts can be costly and lengthy, with no guarantee of success.

To advertise at a price thats right for you

In spite of the fact that there is no such thing as a ‘common law marriage’, many cohabiting couples think that they will have the same rights as a married couple if their relationship breaks down.

Although that is not the case, there are steps they can take to protect their assets, such as entering into a Cohabitation Agreement.

If you would like further advice regarding Cohabitation Agreements or other family law matters, contact Patrick Mulcare at Spratt Endicott Solicitors on 01295 204000 or email him at pmulcare@se-law.co.uk.

Resolutions for a better you!

If working to be a better version of yourself is amongst your New Year’s resolutions for 2018, then those all-important first steps are crucial to ensure success. Forget the usual mad exercise regimes and post-Christmas crash diets – it’s all about feeling and looking your best, and creating this is more like a marathon, not a sprint! • Ease back into healthy living steadily – changing any aspect of your lifestyle too quickly spells certain failure. • Decide which aspects you want to work on, and take it gently! If you’d like to get fitter, then

12

walking or swimming are great ways to start increasing your activity, without shocking your joints or straining anything. • Food is the same – change little things about your diet to see long-term results. Healthy foods are full of nutrients, but aren’t always low in calories, so make sure that – even if you’re choosing the best option – your daily energy output is equal to or greater than your input, to see results. • Make sure you get those all- important vitamins and minerals – it’s

To advertise at a price thats right for you

surprising how many delicious fruits and vegetables can be packed into a breakfast smoothie, which will set you up for the day and keep you feeling full until lunchtime. • Remember to have a treat each day – otherwise you’ll find it harder to sustain this new healthy lifestyle. The odd glass of wine or chocolate biscuit isn’t a sign that you’re falling back into old habits, it’s natural to fancy foods that taste good but you know aren’t good for you, and if you deny yourself anything completely, it just makes you crave it more!

How to survive the holidays… with your sanity intact! We’re being bombarded, as usual at this cheery time of year, with festive messages, an abundance of tinsel, baubles and wrapping paper littering every surface…….phew!! If that’s not enough to have steam pouring from your ears, add in the prospect of incoming in-laws – ‘tis indeed the season of smiling through gritted teeth and peeling a barrage of sprouts! I’ve battled my way through many a yuletide, emerging at New Year in varying states of chocolate overdose and exhaustion, but it has helped me come up with a few top tips to keep you sane, starting with preparation you can do now:

better than the ready-made versions

Make a one-pot sharing dish – I like to do a huge lasagne - for Christmas Eve, so that you can wrap presents merrily, as inebriated as you feel necessary, and the many guests who pop in with gifts, can help themselves

Expect chaos – over excited kids (and overly merry adults!) make a mess. There’s not much that stain remover, bin liners and kitchen roll Defrost the freezer - you’ll can’t cope with, see why later. Chuck out so stock up anything that’s encased in a in advance snowball, or that you have to and save chip off the back with a stout getting spatula stressed when red Plan and cook ahead. Work wine hits that new out all the meals you’d rather carpet not slave over – and decide which you can pre-prep and freeze. Pigs in blankets, stuffing, gravy – all can be pre-cooked and frozen weeks ahead, and still taste heaps

• •

Bribe the kids – the way you were as a child! It’s an absolute fact that Santa only delivers to kids who tidy their bedrooms, or help with the shopping – so keep the legend going for a new generation, and ensure a few moments’ peace

Stock the medicine cabinet – kids’ pain relief, some for the adults, remedies for upset tummies and indigestion and a big box of plasters – that’ll see you through most things

Pet-proof your presents – many a box of chocolates, wrapped and under the tree, has been eaten by the family dog – you don’t need the worry and out-of- hours vets’ bills, so keep anything toxic or tempting well out of the way

Relax and delegate – you’re not superhuman, and nobody really cares if things aren’t perfect – what matters is that everyone is happy and has a fabulous time, with the people who really mean the most – and that’s something money can’t buy

GARDENING THIS MONTH As we approach Christmas and the biggest buying bonanza for houseplants, Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day thinks it’s time we put potted foliage and flowering plants back onto our windowsills for good.

Houseplants for year-long cheer

In gardening we enjoy fads and fashions, everything horticultural moves, flows, ebbs and wains in and out of popularity. Just look at this summer – Begonias, Dahlias and Hydrangeas have seen a massive upsurge in popularity but what about houseplants? Well, its good news for lovers of Yuccas, Cacti, Peace Lilies, Air Plants, Orchids and Poinsettias as sales have increased, fuelled by the so-called millennial gardeners. This new generation of gardeners want to enjoy growing plants but that requires land – preferably land you own. In a recent survey of 500 14-24 years olds, 75% said they enjoyed growing plants, but many added that they didn’t have the space

H

but many simply haven’t got the garden to do it in, so the next best thing is to grow some exotic indoor plants. It was back in 1947 when a nurseryman by the name Thomas Rochford termed those plants we grow indoors as ‘houseplants’. It was the ingenuity of this family run business that introduced UK gardeners to the likes of African Violets, Swiss Cheese Plants, Poinsettias, Rubber Plants, Money Trees (Crassula ovata, pictured) and Weeping figs, amongst others. This commercial grower, where I spent my own apprenticeship back in the late 1970s, introduced home gardeners to a myriad of foliage and flowering plants which we take for granted today. In winter, as we approach Christmas, the choice is much wider in terms of foliage and flowering plants, so it may seem odd that I suggest the possibility of buying a small collection of cacti and succulents. Cacti can be reasonably priced and a small group on a windowsill can be very effective. They are also easy to look after, the principal need being that they should be well watered between spring and early autumn, and from autumn through until early spring be given no water whatsoever. They do need a light position and reasonable warmth – other than that they are very little bother. The Christmas (and Easter cacti) are quite different from the usual desert cacti.

Our fascination with Schlumbergera, the Latin name for the Christmas Cacti extends across generations. Quite often plants are easily rooted (in late spring is best) and passed to family members with the legacy of the plant adding anecdotal folklore to our potted favourites. This group of cacti are termed forest cacti so need more moisture through the growing season and can even be grown in more open textured potting composts rather than sandy or gritty mixes. They are best given a holiday break outdoors in summer before returning indoors in September.

Once in their autumn position they are best left to continue to bloom simply turning the plant once a week to encourage balanced flowering. In the summer feed regularly with Baby Bio, however as soon as the flower buds form move over to some high potash feed such as Phostrogen or Tomato fertiliser to get the best from the flowers. Similar in many ways to the cacti is the Sanseveria. There are several forms available and they are extremely tolerant plants that will grow in almost any conditions provided they are not too wet or cold. But they are not everyone’s cup of tea, so if you are gifting one it may be as well to find out beforehand. Oh, it goes without saying, avoid buying one for the mother-in-law, the common name of course for the Sanseveria! You’ll regret it! Last of all the Poinsettia, which a few years ago was looked upon with some trepidation as a difficult plant. Now it is one of the easiest flowering plants available in winter. The reason is simple – plant breeders have improved it tremendously plus we tend to purchase UK grown plants (our local grower is based down the road in Leighton Buzzard!) which do not suffer the ill

effects of transport. These plants dislike cold, draughty locations so warm conditions in the home will ensure good longevity, and make sure you protect them on their journey from the shop to your home. The plants are controlled in height by using clever growth retardants – that’s why if you keep your Poinsettias for another season they grow much taller in their natural state. You can of course trim them back by pinching the stems in the spring to encourage bushiness but be wary of the sap of the poinsettia as it can be an irritant. To keep your Poinsettias healthy, it is essential you position the plant in good light away from direct sunlight and draughts. Avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C). Overwatering too, quickly damages the plant. When the surface of the compost begins to dry out, water thoroughly. Place the pot on a pebble tray, as a humid atmosphere will prolong the bract life. The process to encourage new bracts can be complicated so ask in the Plant Info Office if you need the details. However, successfully re-bracting a plant is something you should have a go at and if you do succeed you can say you’ve cracked it! Incidentally it is National Poinsettia Day on the 12th December so make sure you celebrate it in some way!
