BRACKLEY & BUCKINGHAM DOG TRAINING CLUB

Pets Corner

We all know the importance of protecting ourselves against the sun; we have sun creams to protect us from burning, sunglasses to block out harmful UV rays, and access to water and ice lollies to rehydrate. But what about pets? Animals are just as vulnerable to the sun as humans, yet are often forgotten about during hot summer days. There are several things you can do for your pet to ensure they don’t suffer sunburn, dehydration or overheating. Every species of animal has different needs, so we have categorised the advice below for dogs and cats. Do NOT be tempted to apply human sunscreens to your pet; they contain zinc oxide which is extremely poisonous to animals. Remember, extra care will need to be taken for very young, old or ill pets as they are especially vulnerable to heat.

GARDENING THIS MONTH...

Top illusions to make your garden look larger

Well, next month it’s the Olympics in Rio and we can expect much colour, passion, thrills and spills, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. Somewhat closer to home Alan Titchmarsh and the Love Your Garden Team continue to create amazing spaces for special people fuelled by their inspiration and passion for the great outdoors. Both of these spectacles have one thing in common – the ‘wow factor’! There are many ways of creating your own ‘wow factor’ in your garden. It can be as simple as planting a spring blossom tree or a meticulously grown wisteria or climbing rose up a garden structure

like an arbour, pergola or feature wall. For many people though it’s the ability of maximising your space so ensuring your own ‘wish list’ includes everything the family needs – a seating area, some lawn (or artificial grass), a sand pit and play area for the children to areas for growing food and flowers. In a small garden, where space is at a premium, you’ll want to do what you can to create the illusion of more space. You’ll want to make a small garden look as big as possible and avoid things that make it look smaller. So, here B.B.B are a few ways of Home and Garden making smaller Property Maintenance gardens look more spacious by Interior & Exterior * Painting & Decorating incorporating a Home Improvements * Garden Renovation few tricks of the Projects All aspects of gardening trade. Fencing * Hard & Soft Landscaping Let’s start by Drives * Patios * Paths Fencing * Turfing using colour Brickwork * Re-pointing Planting * Pruning correctly. you see things. Hot colours (reds, yellows and oranges) for instance, pop out at you, making you feel like you are closer to what you are looking at. Cool colours (blues, greens and purples) tend to recede and make you feel as if you are further away from them. So, a trick in a small garden is to use plants with hot colours towards the front of the garden border and plants with cooler colours set towards the back. The cooler colours will make you feel like the garden extends further than it does, thus making a small garden look larger. Likewise, the opposite goes

for dark verses light or pale colours. Dark colours recede, giving the illusion of depth, while light colours give the illusion of less depth, making you feel you are closer. This doesn’t only have to do with plants, you can paint a far wall a dark colour or place a dark object towards the back as it will trick you into thinking it is further back and the garden will seem bigger than it is. One easy mistake to avoid is to get outdoor furniture not suitable for the size of the garden. Just like in an indoor room, if the furniture is simply too bulky or large for the space it will overwhelm the room and make it look much smaller. You also don’t want to go to the other extreme by using furniture that is too small as this in turn will also make it look doll-like and the garden appear smaller. A good trick is to use furniture that doesn’t cut your field of vision. You want to be able to see under and over the piece, or maybe even through it. To achieve this you can use seating that has legs, or perhaps metal furniture which isn’t too bulky and is perhaps made of a

woven see through material. This will make a small garden look big because of all the visual space it creates. One of the best and fun ways to instantly double the visual size of your small garden is by using mirrors. A well placed mirror will reflect light in the garden, creating the appearance of more space. A great way to trick the visitor into thinking your garden is bigger, is by making the mirror blend into the background. This can be done by using a large full length mirror, as pictured, to create a doorway, and by concealing the edges with plants or other material – effectively framing the mirror. Although using a smaller mirror would also work to a lesser degree. Using water, like in a small reflective pool also creates depth by reflecting light and the surroundings. A great trick is to combine the two, by having a strip of water, sometimes called a rill, run up to the mirror. This will make a small garden look even bigger by creating the illusion of a long canal that runs on forever.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind before installing a mirror in its permanent location. First, use a mirror that is meant for the outdoors or else it will not weather very well, unless its a shabby more rustic look that you are going for. Secondly, if possible try to place your mirror facing away from the path of the sun. If not you will get blinded every time you look directly at it. Or even worse, you will have a beam of light pointed directly at your, or the neighbour’s house. When paving your small garden, it’s best to use smaller paving materials. For example, use smaller stone paving stones that are in proportion with the space. Also use smaller stone gravel. Don’t go to the extreme though; using very small materials will create a ‘dollhouse effect’ making the garden look smaller. Too many or too few materials will also have the same effect. Using only one flooring material will make the garden space look boring while using too many will create chaos and a cluttered look.

A Buckingham Garden Centre Gift Voucher worth £25!

We hope you are enjoying the balmy summer weather, so to help you enjoy your garden even more we have two £25 vouchers up for grabs. An easy and practical way to make your small garden look bigger at dusk is by using outdoor lighting correctly. You want to achieve a balance between too little or too much light. Insufficient outdoor lighting will make the space less inviting and will not let you see where you are going. On the other hand using too much lighting will let you see every inch of the garden making it seem smaller. The correct balance of light will illuminate up the area sufficiently whilst creating areas of shadow and depth. These shadows make it seem like there is something more beyond so you can’t tell how far back the garden extends. Use different types of lights, for example; up-lights to light trees from below, down-lights to light a seating area and ground-lights to light a path. Remember solar lighting requires no special wiring and the lights can be moved around until the best effect is found. You can even buy solar spot lights for up-lighting trees such as these birch pictured and the effect can be dramatic!
