JUNE 2017 ISSUE
Welcome...
to the June edition of the Life in Buckingham magazine.
There’s plenty to do in June! We may have run out of Bank Holidays for a while, after May’s double helping, but the long, balmy evenings more than make up for an extra day off here and there…. Local strawberries and cream, relaxing barbecues, evenings just perfect for a family bike ride – June is just perfect for them all! To start the month, it’s half term! To parents everywhere, it’s either an expensive week off or a few days of juggling playdates and holiday clubs, calling in Granny to babysit, just to get to work on time. For frazzled mums and dads everywhere, who enjoyed the long weekend at the end of May, at least it’s a shorter working week and normal order will be resumed on 5th. Back to the packed lunches and forgotten P.E kits! On 17th it’s the Queen’s official Birthday, usually held on the second Saturday in June, but delayed by a week this year because The Duke of Edinburgh celebrates his 96th Birthday on that day - 10th June. In a tradition brought in by George II in 1748, the official celebration is commemorated in London with Trooping the Colour. The Queen celebrated her ‘actual’ 91st Birthday on April 21st, but the annual summer celebration for the monarch was created almost 270 years ago, in an acknowledgement that the country wishes to celebrate, and the weather in this country is seldom settled, except in midsummer! Father’s Day is just the day after, on 18th – so it’s a weekend of celebration! Make this the day you spoil Dad – with a surprise gift, a day out, a relaxing Sunday barbecue with family and friends - or get the kids busy, creating homemade cards and decorating cupcakes! Even if he just gets a lovely cup of tea and sole charge of the TV remote for the evening, make this day a little bit special for Dads, Grandads and uncles everywhere. Wednesday 21st marks the longest day, the Summer Solstice – the day that the sun is highest in the sky, with the earliest sunrise and latest sunset of the year. Make the most of this highlight of the summer, and enjoy!

Wildlife in June
There’s nothing more beautiful than an evening stroll on a balmy midsummer’s day….and June boasts the longest day of the year – the perfect opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful countryside. Combining family time, fresh air, exercise and a bit of rural education for the kids, there couldn’t be a better way to relax and spend time together. June is a wonderful month for seeing wildlife – nature’s bounty is at peak production, with plants supplying food a-plenty for everything from the smallest insects to the largest mammals, enabling all species to flourish and to raise the next generation. One of my favourite places for an evening or Sunday afternoon walk is along a canal towpath, where you can enjoy peace and quiet, away from the traffic, and watch wildlife of all kinds, just going about their daily business. With hedgerows and banks providing a great habitat for garden birds, rabbits, ducks, moorhens and many more, it’s the perfect place to see nature in action. Keep dogs on a lead when you’re walking – in addition to those on the water, there are ground nesting birds with young, which can be
stressed or disturbed by an overexcited dog bounding up to say hello! Mallard ducklings are now growing some adult feathers, to replace that adorable fluffy down, and can be seen preening and feeding and swimming in formation behind their proud mum. Baby rabbits are beginning to be seen above ground – they’re a few weeks old when they start to leave the nest and graze for themselves – perfect little miniatures of their parents. Butterflies are in abundance – with wild flowers in bloom and lovely warm sunshine, June is the peak month for many species, and a great addition to a walk, if you have small children, is to see how many different types you can spot – why not take a checklist and see who can tick them off first?

Trusted Local Handymen
Retired police officers in Buckinghamshire are pioneers in an ambitious national network of highly vetted handymen launched by ‘Trust in Blue Handymen’.
Helping to combat the endemic ongoing problem of cowboy builders and dodgy tradespeople, local retired police officers with a passion for home maintenance and gardening are taking up tools to provide peace of mind to the residents and businesses of Buckingham and Brackley. Typically police officers retire after 30 years’ service and most are still eager to continue playing an active and productive role in their communities.
All Trust in Blue Handymen are subjected to various checks to assess their suitability to the work prior to joining. Handymen are required to provide References to verify their skills, evidence of their Public Liability
Insurance cover and are criminal record checked via an Enhanced DBS Check. Once up and running the company checks client feedback after every job to ensure that the highest levels of service are being delivered ongoing.
Managing Director, Nick OrdePowlett, hopes that the company’s rigorous selection process will bring security and peace of mind to people in the area:
“Our vetting process is second to none. All of our handymen are friendly retired police officers with many years working in the community under their belt – they understand peoples’ concerns and fears better than anyone else and they genuinely care. Using this unique pool of talented and trustworthy individuals, the Blue Handymen network is hoping to ensure total trust through a careful selection

process and a rigorous ongoing feedback and improvement programme.
Roy Bishop has used the service: “The service I received was extremely good. The handyman was very punctual, fast working and polite. I would recommend him to anyone.”

The Whitewalker - Gam
What on earth is the Museum up to? Has the world gone MAD!!! To mark the start of the new series of Game of Thrones starting on July 17th the Museum is displaying from May 20 th HBO TV’s commissioned tapestry of a ‘Whitewalker’. After June the tapestry is packed up and goes to the US where in due course it will be sold - so Aylesbury is its last hurrah in the UK. This stunning large scale embroidery, 3 metres high and 5 metres long, features a Whitewalker in one of the most intense battle scenes in TV history - the massacre of
Hardhome. Following the success of the Magna Carta embroidery and the Embroiderers’ Guild's role in its production, the UK representatives of the HBO Home Entertainment TV Network contacted the Embroiderers Guild with the view to creating a special artwork in stitch to form the backdrop to mark the release of the 'Game of Thrones' Series 5 DVD & Blue Ray boxed set. The piece took about 5000 hours to produce and involved a total of 140 volunteers.

GARDENIN Re-inventing
June is bursting out all over, especially when it comes to your beds and borders, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day Gardening never really stands still – it evolves and often re-invents itself. Over the last few decades we’ve seen massive changes from the size of our gardens, influenced by land prices and the house building trade to the demise of front gardens to car parking spaces and the moving away from traditional lawns to paved areas, artificial grass

and decking. One major change which has steadily evolved in a positive way is the rise of the mixed border. Larger gardens from yesteryear could give space solely to say roses, a perennial border, a bog garden, a specially colour themed garden such as a white garden (think Sissinghurst or Hidcote Manor) to a dedicated fruit, herb and vegetable garden. Move to the present day and plants are often blended together, so gardening has progressed from the colour coordinated Gertrude Jekyll stylized displays of yesteryear. Bold mixed borders are the order of the day such as the wonderful displays created at Great Dixter, the home of the late Christopher Lloyd and more recently, Monty Don, on BBC Gardeners’ World and his often-shown Jewel Garden. Marrying different plants together like shrubs, perennials, bulbs and roses is the way

forward and it allows you to enjoy in relative harmony a wide and diverse range of plant material in a relatively small space. You need to think about the spacings (always consult the plant label if in doubt), the colours and the eventual heights. The next trick is the interspersing of so-called filler plants that will come up seasonally and inject some much B.B.B Home and Garden Property Maintenance Interior & Exterior * Painting & Decorating Home Improvements * Garden Renovation Projects All aspects of gardening Fencing * Hard & Soft Landscaping Drives * Patios * Paths Fencing * Turfing Brickwork * Re-pointing Planting * Pruning Local reliable service Please call:01280 Local reliable815636 service/ 07754054651 or email: ELEANOR.FENABLES@sky.com Please call:01280 815636 / 07754054651 Find us at yell.com or email: ELEANOR.FENABLES@sky.com
needed colour into the border. These can be seasonal bedders such as Begonias, Fuchsias and Impatiens as well as spring bulbs;- carpeting Snowdrops, Dwarf Narcissi, species Tulips, Winter Aconites, Bluebells and Alliums. The key decision in your plant buying should centre around plants with useful multi-tasking qualities of interesting foliage and form, plants that preferably have a long flowering season (like Hebes and Hydrangeas) and those repeat-flowering roses (including Climbers, David Austin English Roses, Mattocks Roses and Peter Beales® Roses amongst others). Good reliable shrubs to consider in the mix include Potentilla, Choisya ‘White Dazzler’ and Sambucus ‘Black Lace’. When it comes to perennials the choice is much wider, however do include Geranium ‘Rozanne’, Coreopsis ‘Sunray’, Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ and Phlox ‘White Admiral’. Build your wish-list around these criteria and remember the key to a good colourful border all the year is continuity of flower/foliage interest, even in the depth of winter! If you are creating a new border from scratch do leave a few spaces to take plants later on unless of course you have done your homework in advance! So, two species that should figure high on your list would be roses and lilies. Both will weave and blend with your mainstay plants and these will add gorgeous fragrance as well as tiered colour at different levels within the border. The criteria for a rose is that you like the colour, 21

enjoy the fragrance (sometimes good to smell before you buy) and make sure they repeat flower so you can enjoy the benefits over a longer period of time. Lilies offer wonderful opportunities to any space. We tend to just see the showy varieties, including the deliciously fragrant Oriental Lilies such as ‘Stargazer’ and ‘Casa Blanca’. Next up is the Asiatic. Lilies which tend to be earlier flowering - up to 6 weeks - and are available in a wide colour pallet. Don’t underestimate the so-called Skyscaper or Goliath Lilies. These are a cross between Giant Oriental Lilies and Giant Trumpet Lilies. These beautiful Lilies can be
incorporated into the back of your garden borders where they can tower over other bulbs and plants and act as a wonderful backdrop for your display. If left undisturbed Goliath Lilies will grow up to 2.5m tall! The Species and Trumpet lilies are subtler and tend to lend themselves to more naturalistic plantings, so they make a refreshing change in your mixed border. You’ll see plenty of these at Evenley Wood Gardens throughout June and into July. Many of the species types might be more difficult to track down, however, once you’ve seen the plant ‘in the flesh’ you’ll be smitten by their regal and elegant splendour.
