The aim of the monthly Life in Buckingham Magazine is to support businesses in order that the local community can flourish. Website: www.inbusinessmags.co.uk
This summer Stowe House and Landscape Gardens will be the setting for a host of events for all the family and a celebration of anniversaries for Capability Brown and Shakespeare. There’s music from firm favourites Rance’s Rockin’ Chair on 8 June, Flekd blend weaving melodies with driving grooves on 15 June, and brass bands from Towcester and Brackley support Armed Forces Day concert with a military theme on 25 June.
Shakespeare in the grounds of Stowe, by the inimitable troupe of players The HandleBards, sees a rib-tickling Much Ado about Nothing on 17 June and a rip-roaring Richard III on 18 June. Bring a hamper and enjoy a stunning view during your pre-show picnics.
On 20 June the Duchess of Rutland gives a talk as part of the Capability Brown 300th anniversary lecture series. Ticket prices and information are on the website

Invest in local energy, invest in your community
Buckingham and the surrounding parishes spend nearly ÂŁ20million per year on energy, almost all of which leaves the local economy. A new community solar farm is being built at Gawcott Fields Farm, between Buckingham and Gawcott. The 4.17 megawatt solar array is made up of over 16,000 solar panels and is expected to generate over 4 million kWh of renewable electricity each year.
That’s equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 1,000 homes! The solar farm will be professionally run as a community enterprise and will generate significant funding for local organisations and projects.
Get involved - The community bond offer is an opportunity for people and organisations from the local and wider community to invest in the community solar farm and receive annual interest of 6%. 1
To find out more visit: www.gawcottsolar.co.uk
Please be aware your capital is at risk and interest payments are not certain or guaranteed. Prospective investors should read the whole of the bond offer document, available via www.gawcottsolar.co.uk, before deciding whether to invest.

GARDENING THIS MONTH...
A basketful of ideas
Love them or loathe them, nothing sets up the garden for summer like a vibrant display of hanging baskets, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. However, there are some interesting findings about of planting and growing habits as a recent Thompson & Morgan survey of the nation’s gardeners has revealed. On the face of it hanging baskets have always been popular however our tastes perhaps are changing too! Red is the nation’s favourite basket flower
colour closely followed by purple and pink. Interestingly just 5% prefer white flowers, and while only 10% chose yellow and 9% orange, Begonia ‘Apricot Shades’ received the most mentions as a favourite hanging basket plant, with trailing Begonias, Petunias and Fuchsias in general filling the top slots. At the Garden Centre single variety and colour plantings remain popular which slightly jars with B.B.B the survey which Home and Garden Property Maintenance indicated only 9% enjoy these Interior & Exterior * Painting & Decorating types. Bold Home Improvements * Garden Renovation traditional plantProjects ings featuring All aspects of gardening two or three Fencing * Hard & Soft Landscaping flower colours Drives * Patios * Paths Fencing * Turfing Brickwork * Re-pointing Planting * Pruning remain the most Local reliable service popular at 38% Please call:01280 815636 / 07754054651 Local reliable service and 26% go all or email: ELEANOR.FENABLES@sky.com Please call:01280 815636 / 07754054651 out with a riot of Find us at yell.com or email: ELEANOR.FENABLES@sky.com mixed colour in

their baskets, while 27% of respondents said they employ a combination of single colours, duos, trios and mixes across their various baskets. I suppose it all comes to one’s own taste in colours; however traditional pastel colours probably outweigh the more riotous themes when it comes to our customers selecting colours for their baskets. Observationally you tend to see these boldly planted pastels colours featuring outside pubs, hotels and restaurants, but back in 2012 with the London Olympics it was a good excuse to be patriotic with bold red, white and blue plantings, which looked great! One enterprising grower to the gardening trade has created ‘instant drop in’ Easy Planters, perfect for both pots and baskets. The grower knows his plants and colours and they are beautifully themed to give a great impact full display and they’ve proved hugely popular with
our customers! The drop-in mesh based container the plants are grown in allows the roots to grow through into the surrounding compost. All you do is simply place the Easy Planter in the centre of the container and infill with some multi-purpose compost around the mesh planter to complete the planting. One question we always get asked is specific hanging plants for certain aspects and conditions. While most of us enjoy sunny locations so the usual mix of Petunias, Pelargoniums (upright and trailing forms) and Lobelia, spare a thought for those awkward shady spots. Not all is lost – go for shade lovers such as trailing and upright Fuchsias, Begonia semperflorens, Trailing Begonia ‘Tenella’ and the re-vamped mildew-resistant New Guinea Busy Lizzies (Impatiens) such as the ‘Devine’ range. If you want to add foliage – Hedera (ivies), Helichrysum (silver and gold forms) and Lysimachia (Creeping Jenny), both the green and golden leaved forms are fantastic to compliment your colour themes.

There are many cutting raised ‘filler’ plants which you can use to help add the detail and finery to your basket displays. Good ones to consider for your baskets include Bacopa, Brachyscome (Swan River Daisy), Diascia, Felicia amelloides, Nasturtium (especially the variegated foliage form), Nepeta Hederacea Variegata and trailing Verbena. It appears many gardeners, including me, like using hanging baskets as an experimental lab and over 60%, who took part in the Thompson & Morgan survey, look to try something different in their displays this summer; for instance some of the new Petunias such as the Multiflora types like ‘Duo’, ‘Frenzy’ and ‘Select Mixed’. There are some Petunias, namely Calibrachoa which have so-called self-cleaning qualities, that is they naturally do not produce seeds so do not require any deadheading and the
varieties of ‘Million Bells searching out. Colegrave Public Open d this one will certainly n in hanging baskets an be seen at close t style are fast changing g for traditional Coir matting is now the g older style baskets, but they had no need for
basket liners as they now use pre-lined wicker baskets or plastic Easy Fill Baskets that require no lining at all. These were also chosen for their durability and ease of planting and upkeep through the season. This pattern has certainly been reflected at the Garden Centre and whilst moss is perceived as best, in practise it requires more care and watering through the season, plus it’s not the cheapest option. Interestingly experimenting with the likes of edibles in baskets has only seen 36% of basket gardeners trying fruit or vegetables in their hanging displays, despite many edible plants being suitable for baskets. For those that do ‘grow their own’ this way, Strawberries, Tomatoes and mixed herbs were the most common planting option, however the likes of the Raspberry ‘Ruby Beauty’ and even mixed Lettuce looks set to move edibles into a different league.

What does it take to be the best?
Those of a certain age will remember that if you want to be the best, if you want to beat the rest, then dedication is what you need! This is of course true but at Maxwell Swim Club we know that more than dedication is needed to be a top swimmer. Excellence, Teamwork and Enthusiasm are essential to reach the pinnacle of your chosen sport and these are important for swimming. Maxwell place a strong focus on these as the core values of the club, enabling members to reach their full potential. Swimmers are taught important skills before starting to compete, with a strong focus on developing excellence. Being excellent at starts, turns and streamlining means when Maxwell swimmers race seconds can be saved.
Teamwork is a strong component of the club as at times swimming can be a difficult sport. At Maxwell we believe a successful swimmer is a happy swimmer and this can be achieved with the encouragement and support of your swimming family.
Lastly enthusiasm, it's important in any sport for the athlete to want to take part. While training is designed to bring out the best in our swimmers we also make it fun. Coach Bill is loved for his fun sets, gym routines and games, but the swimmers also recognise that
when he challenges them it’s to install stamina and a desire to compete. The approach at Maxwell is recognised through our success at all levels up to national competitions. At the recent South East Youth Regional Finals we won a gold and two silvers and achieved 13 personal bests. We expect further success later this month when our younger swimmers take part in the Age Regionals and also later this year in the National competitions. Maxwell swim in Buckingham and Aylesbury, if you are interested in competitive swimming please contact buckingham_liason@maxwellswimclub.org or go onto the website
