Ok, so it's still rather chilly, but Summertime really is officially here at the end of this month – the clocks go forward an hour at 1am on Sunday 26th March. Yes, we'll lose a precious hour in bed I'm planning a lie-in and a lazy breakfast, to lessen the impact a little – but the overall result of the clocks changing is a 6

good one for busy people everywhere. The good thing about the clocks changing is that extra hour of daylight each evening – time to enjoy the garden, go for a run or maybe visit the park with the kids after work each day – weather permitting, of course. Heading off on the daily commute before dawn,

and returning after dusk, never seeing daylight except that tantalizing glimpse through the office window – now a thing of the past.

Enjoy the extra hour and the warmer weather – British Summertime ends for this year on Sunday 29th October.

Pets Corner

Feathered Friends - They're Flutterly Eggcellent!

’Go to work on an egg' was the slogan that inspired a generation of breakfasts, and sadly nowadays so many people skip this essential meal, or choose cereals or fruit instead - but I'm sticking by a boiled egg and toast soldiers, as the familiar favourite to start my day. There's nothing nicer than a freshly laid egg, still warm from the nest box - and keeping a few hens is a lot easier, cleaner and cheaper than you might think! Their basic needs are simple - a safe, fox-proof house and run, daily food, water and attention, a place to perch, an area to scratch and dust-bathe and a straw-lined nest box for that all-important egg laying. A second-hand henhouse can be inexpensively acquired through local classifieds, and a few ex-battery hens can be rescued for a modest donation and restored to full fitness to lay for another year or more, and enjoy the rest of their life as free range backyard hens. Housing should be thoroughly cleaned with a proprietary disinfectant and located in a quiet corner of the garden, and

8

once you’re set up with everything in place, you’re all ready to acquire your birds. If you’d rather buy a pure breed, you won’t get quite as many eggs, but there are so many pretty variations to choose from. Some councils have noise abatement restrictions in place, so you may not be able to keep a cockerel with your girls in order to breed your own replacements, but they’ll lay for the table just as happily without. Water should be provided in abundance a hopper system isn’t costly and works well, and feed can be given in a pot or scattered along with a few vegetable peelings, to promote natural scratching behaviour, which is how the hens will also find the grit they need to assist with digestion. Once they’re settled in and their eyes are bright and combs are looking red and perky, they will start to lay - maybe half a dozen eggs a week, per hen. They’ll roost in their house at dusk, so shut them up securely at night to prevent fox attacks, and keep an eye out for vermin tunnelling into the run to steal your

hens’ food - rats and mink can also hurt hens, if they get into their coop. I have always had a few hens, and I tend to keep them well past their sell-by-date, if they’re still enjoying life - my record was an old dear who still provided the odd egg at the age of 8! You’ll get hours of entertainment watching their funny ways, and delicious healthy eggs into the bargain - so what are you waiting for?

Eat, Drink and be Merry - Pl

With all the fun and feasting, racing and flipping of Pancake Day just past on 28th February, there are also two Saints' days this month – so there's plenty to celebrate! First off, it's St David's Day on 1st March; Welsh people everywhere – and plenty of the rest of us besides – celebrate this special day dedicated to the patron saint of Wales. Daffodils and leeks abound, and if you've not tried Welsh cakes, now's your chance!

lenty to celebrate this month!

Just over a fortnight on, it's the turn of Irish – with St Patrick's day on 17th March. A time for Guinness, shamrocks and wearing green – and an excellent reason for another party!

Whilst both these celebrations had their origins as religious festivals, they have now been adopted as opportunities to invite others to experience national dentity, take a pride in our roots and join in with the festivities – so enjoy!

GARDENING THIS MONTH Your Seven Point Spring Plan

As we enter the month of March, writes Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day, our thoughts move outdoors with the prospect of starting a vegetable garden, establishing new garden beds, planting just about anything, renovating the lawn and even sprucing up neglected areas. Preparation is the key as we start the growing season. However, one of the most rewarding tasks to do right now is to get rid of the weeds before they start growing with renewed vigour. Hand weed

or hoe out new and emerging weeds regularly as weather conditions allow. Target persistent weeds such as Hairy Bittercress, Ground Elder and Bindweed with spot herbicide treatments, including the safer non-Glyphosate weedkiller options such as Neudorff Superfast & Long Lasting Weedkiller or Bayer Super Fast Weedkiller. The Neudorff product, which works well at low temperatures, is said to control problem weeds including field horsetail as well as moss and algae.

1. Feed for growth Gardeners love to nurture their gardens. Early spring is the best time of the year to give everything in the garden a good dose of fertiliser. After the next substantial fall of rain in early March, scatter slow-release or pelletised fertiliser around the base of your plants. Good feeding products to use include Osmocote and Vitax Q4. If you prefer to garden organically then opt for Blood, Fish and Bone fertiliser but do bear in mind this doesn’t contain the micro-nutrients – the so-called trace elements which will benefit many plants, including lime-hating plants like Camellias, Pieris and Acers. As these feeds break down and filter into the soil, they are absorbed by growing roots and used to fuel growth and flowering.

2. Lawn update Apply a slowrelease complete lawn food such as Evergreen® Complete 4 in 1 to all grass areas. This product encourages a much thicker, tougher lawn, plus it kills weeds, moss and feeds lawns. You can apply this from March onwards. Apply at a maximum individual dose of 35g per square metre (1oz per sq yard) for best results. Use a metal rake to remove any build-up of thatch (the term used to describe dead growth giving lawns a spongy feel underfoot). If the lawn is looking sparse, re-seed or returf bare areas. Before seeding, dig in organic matter and treat the area with a soil wetting agent such as Broadleaf P9 or Swelgel if your soil is light and fast draining. Our Buckingham clay soils would benefit from some John Innes Seed and Cutting Compost to provide a seed bed for new grass seed. Keep everyone off areas that are being renovated until the new grass is growing vigorously.

Pepper or Chilli, Lettuce, Cucumber and Basil. You can start germinating these on a sunny warm windowsill from the end of March if you fancy growing your own from seed.

4. Quick colour Flowering spring annuals can be sown now to give your garden a quick fix from late May onwards. Good hardy annuals to sow directly into the borders include Calendula, Godetia, Larkspur and Nasturtium (pictured). Add instant colour with pots using Pansies, Polyanthus, named Primrose varieties, Violas and Senetti, or flowering pots of bulbs such as Daffodils and Tulips. Also, plan ahead for flowers and invest in trays of hardier bedders such as Antirrhinums, Asters and Dianthus. If you have some undercover protection, then halfhardy bedding plants can be purchased as young seedlings or slightly larger plug plants for growing on in large pots or hanging baskets for strategic bursts of colour.

3. Plant and sow vegetables Early spring is a rewarding time to plant vegetables, whether you’re starting a new garden or popping some herbs in to a sunny window box. Veggies and herbs to plant now include Cabbage, Broad Beans (pictured) and Lettuce but we’ll have to wait a little while till after the last frosts in frost-prone areas to include summer salad veggies such as Tomato, B.B.B Home and Garden Property Maintenance Interior & Exterior * Painting & Decorating Home Improvements * Garden Renovation Projects All aspects of gardening Fencing * Hard & Soft Landscaping Drives * Patios * Paths Fencing * Turfing Brickwork * Re-pointing Planting * Pruning Local reliable service Please call:01280 Local reliable815636 service/ 07754054651 or email: ELEANOR.FENABLES@sky.com Please call:01280 815636 / 07754054651 Find us at yell.com or email: ELEANOR.FENABLES@sky.com

5. Plant just about anything Early spring is a rewarding time to plant trees, shrubs and annuals – it is also the last opportunity to get bare-rooted hedging, rose bushes, fruit trees and soft fruit planted before they come out of winter dormancy. Elsewhere in the garden take stock now and remove plants that have died or are past their best, or extend your garden to accommodate some new plantings. Prepare for new plants by clearing any weeds and grass, then improve the soil by digging some organic matter such as Tree, Shrub and Rose Planting Compost into it. When working out where to place a new plant take into account the amount of space that is required eventually. Always check plant labels - either on the pot or attached to the plant for information on eventual plant size both in height and spread. 6. Repot for growth Generally speaking, containergrown plants, including indoor house plants, which have been in the same pot for several years, or that have outgrown their current pot, can be re-potted now. Place plants into slightly larger pots with fresh

WIN A Buckingham Garden Centre Gift Voucher worth £25!

potting mix or trim roots and replant into the old pot but with fresh potting compost such as Levington® Original MultiPurpose Compost. Specialist plants such as Orchids (pictured) and Cacti would benefit from using their own specific composts. 7. Prune for growth Plants that have already bloomed or have frost damage can be pruned to encourage new growth. The general rule is to prune flowering shrubs directly after flowering so avoiding the possibility of removing flowering wood by mistake. Also, if not already done, remove old stems from perennials and grasses to make way for fresh spring growth. To keep shrubs, perennials and annuals in bloom over the months ahead, remove spent flowers regularly unless they would produce attractive hips or berries later if the spent flowers are left on.

Education

Would you like to earn extra money for your spare room......

With the new academic year in September drawing closer, the demand for places at the country’s top independent schools becomes frenetic from international students around the globe. Gateway Education is a leading company specialising in providing international students with a complete educational experience in the UK. Currently working with lots of partner independent schools in the UK, Gateway takes the students through school selection, admission and entry through to the long term dream of securing a university place. Gateway’s total care package ensures that students can focus on achieving success and not have to worry about being a learner abroad and a vital part of this process is finding caring host families. Emma Arthurs, Gateway Accommodation officer explained, ‘A stable home base is key to our

students’ success. We are now keenly looking for host families in Buckinghamshire to support our students attending Akeley Wood. We look to our hosts to welcome international students into their family and provide them with a home from home environment, providing services such as full board and regular laundry. In return hosts will gain an insight into other cultures, an opportunity to help young people learn and develop – all supported by a generous care allowance.’ Besides looking for host families who can take a student throughout the academic year, Gateway are also seeking hosts for holiday cover. Emma added,’ Students tend to go home at Christmas, Easter and of course during the summer however they are normally here in the UK over half term periods.

Although our hosts earn a higher accommodation rate over the holiday periods we understand some wish to share family time on their own occasionally. For that reason we always like to have holiday cover hosts in each area which allows a host family to go away knowing the student will be well cared for in their absence.’

To find out more, contact Emma at Gateway on 01604 642082 or email her accommodation@gateway education.co.uk Gateway Education, 4 Darnell Way, Moulton Park, Northampton, NN3 6RW
