Be a lifesaver!

Babies and toddlers are notoriously accident prone, and most of the time we can keep them safe, but would you know what to do if your little one was choking, or fell down some stairs?

As parents and grandparents, we can spend many hours a day looking after young children, in a whole range of environments, with a variety of potential hazards we can’t always foresee. By knowing how to handle even the most worrying of situations, you can just feel that little bit more confident, that you have the First Aid skills to use,

4

should something unexpected and awful happen. Knowing the signs of shock, a head injury or other serious situations, and what you should do in these scenarios, means that we truly can be lifesavers.

A variety of organisations run courses, designed to teach parents and carers the basics of Paediatric First Aid. Your local college, children’s centre, Pre-school or Red Cross centre may offer courses at a very reasonable rate – sometimes even free of charge. Usually the training takes most of a day, but can be studied in the evenings instead, so do ask for details of a course to suit you. Costs are reduced if you book as a group, so why not ask around other parents and do the training together – you may even be able to get the instructor to come to your venue.

Subjects covered by the course will include how to accurately assess a casualty, what to do if a child isn’t breathing, relieving choking, controlling bleeding and looking after an unconscious person. Keeping calm in all of these situations isn’t easy if it’s your child that is unwell, but taking a First Aid course will give you the confidence and skills to cope – so what are you waiting for? Book your training today!

Call your vet We all love giving treats to our pets, but there’s a very good reason to buy those that are specially made for your dog – some human foods can be fatal to our canine companions. If you’ve often given your pet some titbits from the table, or a few leftovers after dinner, it can come as quite a shock to find that many foods that we love could harm or even kill your beloved dog.

Pets Corner Potential poisons lurking in your fridge All of the following foods can cause illness or even prove fatal, so if you know your pet has just had an accidental chocolate binge, or eaten his way through a punnet of grapes, your next call should be to your vet, who will give you the right advice to help your animal. Alcoholic drinks Avocados Cherries Chocolate Coffee Garlic Grapes Onions Raisins

Rhubarb leaves Sweeteners Many other foods, plants and household products aren’t good for pets, either. If you’re worried that your pet has eaten something he shouldn’t, please don’t wait for him to look unwell – call your vet for advice without delay.

TOP TIPS Motoring matters

With car insurance prices continually on the increase and my usual desire to keep an eye on the pennies, I’ve been looking into ways to be adequately covered – and save money, on my children’s behalf. As the parent of teenagers, the dawning of their 17th birthday heralds an increase in outgoings of a vehicular variety – and since the introduction of gender neutral pricing, it’s no cheaper to have daughters than sons! Learning to drive certainly isn’t inexpensive – but when they’ve passed, that’s where the fun starts!

Newly qualified drivers are always classed as high-risk, due to their lack of driving experience, so the aim here is to reduce their premiums, whilst ensuring you’re staying well within the law and that the insurance will pay out in the event that it’s necessary.

Think about getting a •Telematics device (black box)

fitted, which monitors your driving habits and can result in a refund or cheaper premium the following year, for good driving

Increase the policy’s voluntary excess, payable if you claim

Reduce the annual estimated •mileage – but only if you won’t be exceeding your estimate

Top premium-reducing tips include:

Add a more experienced driver to the policy - make sure the stated main driver is correct, though, or your insurance will be invalid

Consider Third Party, Fire & Theft instead of Comprehensive cover – if that is sufficient for your needs Choose a car with a smaller •engine size - usually means a lower insurance group

No mods – modifications to a car will increase the amount you’ll pay to insure it

Take a Pass-plus course – makes insurers feel you’re more conscientious and is beneficial to your driving skills and confidence – win / win!

Shop around – online, through •comparison sites; also try local

brokers who can search the market for the best price on your behalf, and help if you need to claim 15

Selecting flavour over quantity appears to be the mantra many gardeners are following, suggests Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day.

Early summer and suddenly our attention is drawn to growing some crops in the garden and the usual contenders - Tomatoes, salad crops, a few Strawberries and maybe a few beans are generally top of the growing wish-list at this time of the year. Of all the many reasons why we grow crops, flavour has to be a

The true taste of home-grown toms

chief priority otherwise it does beg the question, what’s the point? I suppose ease of growing followed by how productive the crop is going to be has always got to be taken into the equation as well. When it comes to Tomatoes it is pretty clear that home produced always come out tops, however in the flavour league this has changed dramatically over the past few years. The traditional Tomato varieties remain popular, partly trading on their name but mainly on their heritage so the likes of ‘Moneymaker’, ‘Alicante’ and

‘Alisa Craig’ are often asked for.

and taste, but people still want to grow it! When ‘Gardener’s Delight’ first entered the fold it was initially grown for the supermarkets and customers quickly fell in love with those tasty bite-sized sweet flavoured fruits carried in relatively high yields. It is now one of the best varieties and because it famously has the other advantage of the fruit on each truss ripening at much the same time! It’s also a cordon form so it grows particularly well in pots, borders Flavour wise of these three, and even large hanging baskets. ‘Alisa Craig’ always does Again, grow it yourself and the particularly well in tastings, closely flavour is going to be superb. followed by ‘Alicante’. cordon that is allowing one main stem to develop with the side shoots being removed regularly. It’s well worth the effort as its fruits don’t disappoint! The Tomato varieties ‘Sweet Million’ (cordon), ‘Tumbling Red’ (bush) and ‘Tumbling Yellow’ (bush) have carved a particularly good following amongst our customers. What makes these particularly good for children to grow is the fruits are wonderfully sweet, and not too big so can be eaten straight off the plant, perfect for growing appetites! You are likely to come across grafted Tomatoes at the Garden Centre too. Over 90% of all commercially grown tomatoes are produced on grafted plants and this often does come as a surprise to many people. You’ll pay more for a grafted plant; however you’ll instantly get a much more vigorous plant, increased yields and improved disease resistance. I suspect what has deterred a number

of people away from growing grafted tomatoes has been the fact they were relatively unknown varieties. This appears to be changing as popular varieties are receiving the grafting make-over treatment, so familiarity may help us be tempted to grow them on a grafted rootstock in future. This year we are selling grafted varieties of ‘Sungold’, ‘Supersweet’ and ‘Shirley’, amongst others, in 10cm pots and these can be planted

outdoors from the end of May. Having selected the variety, we now need to consider which is the best way to grow the tomatoes? There are plenty of options - cropping bags, ring culture pots, large pots, open border or hanging baskets. Cropping bags still remain one of the most popular methods of producing good crops, however the recent development of larger cropping bags such as the Levington Tomorite Giant Planter, which contains 50litres of compost compared with the 25-30 litres in a standard grow bag, makes life a little easier. If you can opt for the bigger size your plants will benefit from the extra depth and improved water holding capacity. These planters are perfect for growing your plants as cordons up a stout bamboo cane or one of the kits designed for cropping bags. If you are growing bush or the cascading spreading varieties then they prefer to trail naturally over the side of a large pot, windowbox or hanging

basket. Again, do make sure there is sufficient compost to help support growth. I often add some moisture retaining granules, such as Broadleaf P4, to help keep the compost moist through the growing season.

If you grow your tomatoes in large pots (ideally they need to be 40cm diameter minimum) use a standard multipurpose compost such as J Arthur Bower’s Masterblend Compost. This would prove a good choice. Tomatoes do need good amounts of sunlight, and watering and feeding will be the crucial chore to ensure strong healthy and fruitful plants. Watering needs to be done on a regular basis, either morning or late afternoon/early evening. I always try to follow a regular pattern as I think the plants quickly get used to the routine! However, if you are going away say on long weekend or a short break it might be worth investing in an automatic

watering system. Hozelock produce a simple reservoir system which has a large 15-litre capacity reservoir which should keep your plants nicely hydrated for up to 14 days. You should start feeding around six weeks after planting, so make a note on your calendar or planner when you need to start. A liquid Tomato fertiliser such as Tomorite or Doff Tomato food is ideal. Simply follow the recommendation on the packaging. Both of these contain natural seaweed extract which is useful for keeping the plants green and healthy. You can also use Maxicrop Seaweed Extract (the brown bottle) as a mixer with the likes of Phostrogen and MiracleGro if you wish to opt for a soluble

fertiliser. This works especially well and gives you the option of promoting additional stem and leaf growth mid-season using the Miracle-Gro, which contains a higher nitrogen content compared with potash rich Phostrogen fertiliser. Regular tying in of cordon tomatoes as well as the removal of side shoots will keep you occupied through the growing season.

Once cordons get to around the sixth truss then it’s a good idea to ‘stop’ the plant, that is, removing the growing point one leaf joint above the final truss. By doing this you funnel the energy into developing and ripening all the fruit which has set. Once we get into September you can gradually remove some of the lower leaves to help promote

ripening of fruits. Tomato pests and diseases are few and far between. If Tomato blight is a regular problem then opt to grow a blight resistant variety such as ‘Ferline’ or ‘Lizzano’. Both are good F1 hybrids and can be grown indoors and outdoors. Problem whitefly can be controlled by using Bayer Provado Ultimate Fruit & Vegetable Bug Killer or if you garden organically then use either Bayer Bug Free (fatty acids) or Bug Clear for Fruit & Veg Gun (based on plant extracts). You can of course place some useful companion plant alongside your Tomatoes – indoors and out. Tagetes are often recommended as they repel aphids as well as reduce

root-knot nematodes in the soil. The aromatic Basil should also be considered as it repels whiteflies, spider mites, aphids and is said to improve pollination by attracting bees. Interestingly Parsley attracts hoverflies which feast on the common Tomato pests! There’s no doubt, growing Tomatoes can be a satisfying experience, especially if you can engage younger members of the household, but if you are putting all this effort in, do make sure you are rewarded by flavoursome fruits by choosing the tastiest variety you can!

Happy growing!

With two wonderful Bank Holidays this month, I’m hoping for some super sunny weather – to pack up a picnic and have a fun day out with the family. I’m a little weary of soggy sarnies and tepid tea, so this month I’ve made it my mission to try out some much tastier options, and very yummy they are, too – all in the name of research, of course! My perfect picnic doesn’t need cutlery, or really even plates – sharing tasty mini-snacks is so much more fun, and there’s nothing to lug home and wash up! Reusing lidded plastic icecream or takeaway tubs as serving dishes keeps your food from getting squashed and means that you can pop the empties in a recycling bin whilst you’re out and about.

Prepare to picnic!

For four people: Carrot & Cucumber sticks with Hummus for dipping – peel and chop into munchable batons, add a mini tub of hummus in your favourite flavour

Mini bagel pizzas – split and toast mini bagels, spread with tomato puree, sprinkle with grated cheese and grill until melted and bubbling. Leave to cool completely before packaging them up, or they’ll go soggy.

Chicken & pepper kebabs – roast two chicken breasts (or a meat-free alternative) in foil and your choice of seasoning, cool, unwrap and chop each into 12 chunks; deseed and coarsely chop a red pepper and alternately thread pieces of each onto cocktail sticks Mini cheesecake sandwiches – mix light soft cheese with a little icing sugar ( to taste), use this

24

mixture to coat one side of mini biscuits, spread fruit puree or jam on another biscuit and stick together – messfree pudding, easy to transport and delicious! Water, juice or wine – depending on guests!

All you need now is super weather, good company and a lovely view – and the picnic blanket, of course!

Indulge in the beautiful surrounds of Stowe House and grounds this May and June

Stowe House is one of the most magnificent stately homes in the country and it’s on your doorstep!
