May Days to enjoy!

There’s a lot to like about May – weather’s warm, flowers are blooming, birds singing and both early mornings and late evenings are light and lovely – so many opportunities to enjoy life to the full! With two Bank Holidays – Mondays 1st and 29th – there’s even more free time to relax and unwind with the family; to have a long weekend away, or maybe go to the park, visit a stately home or have a day at the beach. With the school half-term holiday at the end of the month as well,

4

and if – like me - you’re watching the pennies, then finding fun activities to do with the kids is always a challenge! Here are two tried and tested ways to spend a day, without costing the earth: Den day – if you have a garden, this takes on a whole new scale! Create with children aged 2-10, best with a mixed age group to share ideas. You can pretend to be prehistoric people, or out camping somewhere with wild animals – whatever they want to imagine! You’ll need: • Old bedlinen and sleeping bags, old curtains – anything that will drape over furniture • Clothes pegs - to fix these in place, without damaging anything. • Torches, a picnic or pretend food and plastic plates, soft toys or toy

dinosaurs which can be ‘creatures that roam the outside world’! Miniature gardens – these can be made from recyclables or bits of safe, non-toxic plants, so with very little children you can supply ‘safe’ materials and help them to create. You’ll need: • Takeaway trays or shallow ice cream tubs • Modelling clay or playdough – or thick mud if you prefer! • ‘Plants’ – coloured cotton wool, twigs, moss, bits of leaves and grass • Foil to create a pond, string and glue to help everything stay together • Small stones for a rockery, corrugated cardboard strips for edging, lolly sticks for fencing, doll’s house furniture for ‘on the patio’ Have a competition for the craziest, or most realistic, or most colourful garden which will entertain them for hours.

Wildlife in May

Now that Spring is well and truly underway, the native animals and birds living in our parks, gardens and wild areas are busy breeding, bringing up the next generation whilst nature is kindest and food supplies are plentiful. The warm sunshine heralds the arrival of insects to pollinate fruit blossom, garden plants and the early flowering crops, with bees working hard to collect nectar. Birds have been nesting awhile, enjoying the plentiful crop of available insects, with garden favourites such as the blackbird, song thrush, sparrow and robin bringing up clutches offluffy-feathered fledglings. As with other young animals, if you find these tiny birds out of the nest, try not to touch them so that the parents will come back with food – they continue caring for their young for several weeks after they have made the brave step into the big world beyond their nest.

Twenty minutes . . . to save your life

A 20-minute NHS Health Check could save your life. That's the message from Buckinghamshire County Council to residents over 40 to encourage them to visit their doctor for a free health 'MOT'. Public Health Director Jane O'Grady said the risk of heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke increases over the age of 40, and a health check now could help prevent a small issue becoming a bigger problem later. "Evidence shows that although people may feel fine now, they could be increasing their risk of developing heart disease in the future," said Dr O'Grady. "By taking up the offer of a free NHS Health Check now you could literally be saving your life in 20 minutes." Letters from GPs in the next few weeks will invite people over 40 for a health check, although there's nothing to stop people making the first move, and asking their GP for an NHS Health

Check, says Dr O'Grady. "We especially want to encourage men as we know that they are at increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, but may be less likely to attend!" she said. The County Council is organising health checks for its own staff, and opening Old County Hall in Aylesbury on Wednesday May 19 to provide free health checks for people who are unable to have their health check at their GP Practice. Appointments for this and other locations around the county are bookable online at buckinghamshire.nhshealthchecks.com/lo cations. Alternatively, people can make an appointment for an NHS Health Check with their GP practice. To be eligible for a Health Check, you must: •Be aged between 40 and 74 •Live in Buckinghamshire

Buckingham Half Ma Sunday May 14th

On Sunday May 14th this year, the Buckingham area sees its first ever half marathon event, organised by Buckingham & Stowe Running Club. Starting, and finishing, at Maids Moreton playing fields, 250 competitors from all over the country will run the circular 13.1 mile course through the picturesque villages of Leckhampstead, Wicken, and Akeley and surrounding countryside. Chairman, Chris Usher said, “The race committee has worked tremendously hard to get this event off the ground. The amount of planning has been unbelievable

and we are indebted to the parish council and that of Akeley, Vitalograph, and Buckingham Rugby Club for the use of their premises. We are also grateful for the support and guidance we have received from the Town and County Councils/AVDC, Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust and our sponsors.” Race Director, Alex Penny, has lived in Buckingham his whole life and added “I’ve long dreamed of bringing an event like this to the town. I would love to see the race grow and become an important fixture in the local community for years to come” All profits from the event will go to Bucks Young Carers and the parish council for the refurbishment of the playground in Maids Moreton. The event is being sponsored by Rainscourt Family Law Solicitors of Milton Keynes, and Buckingham based Lee Therapies, Bates Body Factory, and The Energy Effect Fitness Studio. We’d also like to thank Seahawk Trophies and Tesco for their invaluable contributions. The half marathon starts at 9.30am, so why not come along and cheer on the runners? finals; a 70% increase when compared to 2015. Open Championship Medal winners were Billy Martin (Silver) and Megan Pirrie (Bronze). Maxwell’s Junior Championship Medal winners were Matthew Burton (1 Gold, 4 silver and a bronze ), Tom Selby (Silver) and Millie Tomlin-Davies (2 Bronze). In the youngest age group 10year old ALice Weston won 14 golds winning all the events she entered. With a fantastic showing from younger members of the club, including a 1st and 2nd in the Girls 11-12yr Freestyle relay, 1st in the Girls 11-12yr Medley Relay, 3rd in the Boys 11-12yr Freestyle relay and in the Girls 13-14yr Medley relay things are certainly looking bright for the future of Maxwell. Head Coach, Lisa Atkinson, noted that the performances at the younger end of the club in particular were “testament to the hard work of a great team of coaches working towards the same vision of improving the technique and skill elements of all strokes. The swimmers are entirely dedicated to improving themselves and reaching their potential, which is extremely exciting. Having the chance to guide these swimmers along the pathway is a great pleasure.” If you would like to be a part of Maxwell’s exciting future, you can request a trial at www.maxwellswimclub.org

GARDENING THIS MONTH Be bold and colourful this May May is all about getting out doing stuff in the garden, being creative and enjoying plants, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day Gardening at this time of the year is full of expectations, choosing the best plants for the right location and selecting the best ideas to make your garden work for you and the family. Dare I say, also, a bit of impulse, spur of the moment purchases as we hit two Bank Holidays in May but we are allowed to indulge once in a while! As far as choosing plants,

sundries and accessories for your garden these things can be sorted and resolved by having a family chat or a friendly word at the Garden Centre. However when it comes to being creative and bringing new ideas to our plot that generally comes down to us as individuals, our vision and our best intentions. So, this month is probably the best time to perhaps create some of those dream ideas as the growing season gathers momentum. Most of the best ideas are the simple ones. To help to create an illusion of light and space in your garden paint the walls and fences white. At night, if there is any light in the garden, they will act as reflectors. Likewise, in smaller gardens you can bounce light into a dark area of

your garden with a strategically placed mirror. Also, white or light coloured painted fencing or walls will help boost light levels. As we’ve seen over the years, wood preservatives now come in an exciting range of colours so why not paint your fence a bright shade to co-ordinate with a favourite colour scheme? Colour theming your pots and baskets can get the creative juices flowing and this is where having a vision and plan makes the decision-making process so much more straightforward. Growers of seasonal plants, aka bedding

plants, have crafted the art of giving us ‘recipe style’ planting packs or even ready planted containers which simply drop into our patio pots and hanging baskets – fool-proofing gardening at its best! However, there are few tricks when it comes to planting your baskets that are worth repeating. By adding some controlled release fertiliser to your baskets when planting up – a few pellets as guided on the Osmocote should keep your plants fed for the entire season. The fertiliser will only release nutrients when the compost is warm and GR moist, i.e. during EA TT the growing season. IP Whilst you are adding this, don’t forget to add some water-retaining granules such as Gardman WaterGel to the basket, too, to help reduce time spent on watering. The watering aspect of all containers needs some thought. One good tip is to snip the spout off a small fizzy drinks bottle and pierce the bottom with plenty of holes. When planting up hanging baskets sink the bottle in among the plants. To water, simply top up the bottle – this is especially useful if the baskets hang above head height. 23

Once you’ve got the basket ready for hanging you can prevent the basket twisting to reveal their ‘not so good side’ by clipping an inexpensive lead swivel to the bracket – just a quick adjustment and the problem’s solved! During the summer when your baskets need a quick drink, instead of using a watering can, place a handful of ice cubes on top of the compost. As the ice melts the water gradually soaks in with no messy spillages. Just make sure the ice doesn’t touch your plants – you want to give them a drink not frostbite! When it comes to container plants, well there’s so much choice. For your main centre planting go for a bush Fuchsia such as ‘Annabel’, ‘Snowcap’ (pictured) or ‘Winston Churchill’ as they perform and flower without much trouble. Both seed raised and cutting grown Pelargoniums (traditional ‘Geraniums’) are the stalwarts to

many displays and for a good reason, they are reliable and most varieties are bred so the flowers don’t shatter in the rain and also hold well in hot sunshine. Don’t forget Begonias, especially the ‘Non-Stop’ range available in a wide range of colours, and again very reliable through the summer. The trailing plants that cascade and topple over the edges of your planters can be split into two main groups – foliage and flowers – both equally important in the overall visual effect you are trying to create. Let’s start with the wonderful leafy plants to add impact and will contrast against the flowers. Good candidates include Nepeta with its white and green rounded leaves; the Helichrysums with their rounded leaves in grey, gold and silver; Nasturtium variegated with the cream and green marbled leaves and attractive flowers (pictured) and Golden Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia ‘Aurea’).
