Buckingham Computer Repair & Support

The response to our computer repair & support advertising in Buckingham has been overwhelming and we now have lots of new clients on our books, many of whom have signed up to our monthly, remote support cover. Below are just some of our clients’ thoughts on our services: “My home office workstation has served me well over the past 5 years, and I had two choices, buy a new one and transfer the data,

4

or give my PC a new lease of life. I decided to go for the latter (I have a fear transferring data and as a transport conversion engineer I have some very valuable work) and saw PChelp4U in the business services magazine and contacted them. Ben was my sole contact and provided a service, whereby he took away my machine and returned it three days later – absolutely first class. My laptop will be next I suspect. I have no reservations in recommending PChelp4U. Thank you.” Brian Eldridge, Buckingham

“I was very happy with the service you provided. My laptop crashed at a very difficult time (not that there is ever a good time). You responded quickly, kept me updated through your diagnosis, and carried out the necessary rebuild quickly and effectively. You returned my fully restored laptop when you said you would, and I feel that the charge for the work done was very reasonable. I would (and have already) recommended your services.” Kevin Chappenden, Buckingham Read more at www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/testimonials Contact form: www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/buckingham Landline: 01280 859001 Email: support@pc-help-4u.co.uk

Don’t forget!!

With Autumn well underway, it feels as though Summer’s been over for ages, but we are still in British Summer Time – for now! Back in March, when the clocks went forward an hour, it didn’t feel much like Summer, either, but we have enjoyed the benefit of that hour change in the evenings, with extra daylight enabling activities to continue a little longer; a jog or bike ride, walking the dog, tending the garden, enjoying a

barbecue. On Sunday October 29th, the clocks go back, as we return to GMT. An extra hour of darkness in the evenings is compensated by a little extra light for the morning commute – but not for long, as Winter nears and the days get much shorter. It’s not all doom and gloom, though; making the hour change is much easier nowadays. The majority of electronic gadgets will sort out the time out for themselves, if they are set to auto update, so you may not need to do anything at all, just enjoy the extra hour in bed on Sunday morning!

Autumn pet care – keep out the cold!

Vets

With the nights drawing in and temperatures dropping, my thoughts turn to the pets which live in hutches outdoors – such as rabbits and guinea pigs – which need a little more protection to keep them comfy through the Autumn and Winter weather.

For the hutch itself, a waterproof cover which rolls up out of the way, is a great solution to continuous driving rain – keeping the bedding, and your furry friends, warm and dry. Make sure there’s still adequate ventilation, and that when the sun shines, your pets don’t overheat.

Pets which graze in a run on the lawn, as part of their daily routine, can continue to enjoy stretching their legs in the sunshine, but make sure they have a covered area, to keep them out of an unexpected rain shower, and an area with a floor, so that they don’t have to sit on the cold, wet ground and wait for you to get home and put them in their

cosy hutch! Don’t use the run when the grass is frosty, or in bad weather – the odd day or so in their hutch will be fine, if they have plenty of hay to provide roughage in their diet and there’s room for them to stand up fully and plenty of space to run around. Just add in more play items, such as large cardboard tubes for guinea pigs, or fruitwood to gnaw for rabbits, and spend a little more time with your pet on a day when it hasn’t been out to play.

When the really cold, wintry weather sets in, it’s a great plan to move the hutch into a shed or the garage, or to use an indoor cage in a quiet room, to keep pets warm enough during spells when the day temperature is below freezing. If your pets need to stay outside, provide plenty of fluffed-up hay and straw to keep them cosy, make sure their drinking bottles don’t freeze and add just a little more energy to their diet, to help them build an insulating layer of fat, to keep out the chill.

Why make a Lasting Power of Attorney? At any stage of your life, you or your partner may be unfortunate enough to have an illness or accident that may affect your mental capacity to make decisions. These decisions may be about your financial affairs or your medical treatment. If you are no longer able to decide for yourself, have you put plans in place to appoint someone who can? All of these issues can be resolved by making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). There are two types of LPA – one for finances and one for health. You can make one or both, appoint different Attorneys under each LPA and express ‘preferences’ and ‘instructions’ to outline how you envisage the arrangement working. Most people would prefer not to think about the circumstances in which LPAs are used, but a terrible situation can be much worse if no one is able to access funds or if your loved ones do not have the legal authority to carry out the medical wishes you have expressed to them.

Edible gifts – capture nature’s harvest!

H e al t h & B e a u ty

Green tomato chutney is a great gift – there are plenty of wonderful recipes around, in old cookbooks and online, so choose your favourite! Mine always includes apples, sultanas, all the tomatoes which haven’t ripened before the first frosts threaten, plenty of spiced vinegar, brown sugar, onions…. mmm! It’s a slow make, so be prepared to spend a while stirring, and creates a strong smell in the kitchen, and be sure to line the jam-jar lids, to stop the vinegar eating through. Jars need to be sterilised and filled whilst they’re hot, and I like to use the self-sealing jar lids, and put the tops on as soon as they are filled, so that as it cools, it makes a seal and keeps the content fresh whilst the flavour matures. You’ll need to keep this chutney for at least a month, to allow the flavours to mingle and reach their best, and once the jar is opened, pop it in the fridge to stop any loss of loveliness!

Sloe gin is a fabulous present, and keeps for years, due to the sugar and alcohol content! The recipe is really simple, and all you need to mix the

14

To advertise at a price thats right for you

ingredients and soak the fruit, is a big old sweet tub or Kilner jar. For every 500g of sloes, add 500g of sugar – or less, depending on taste – and a litre of gin. Make sure the sloes have had a frost on them before picking, or you can cheat by popping them into the freezer the night before. Leave to mature, rotating the jar every day or so, for at least 2 months, then strain through muslin into new or sterilised glass bottles, and cork or seal the caps on, to keep it at its best. The longer you keep it before straining the fruit out, the better it will be – so you may wish to mature yours in the bottles, and give as a gift with the fruit still in place, to keep it maturing nicely!

GARDENING THIS MONTH

You need to be quick off the mark to get the most and best from early flowering bulbs suitable for winter forcing, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. I love to have bulbs growing indoors ready to bloom around Christmas time, but even before the flowers arrive, there’s something very naturalistic and simple

about those little green shoots and they look beautiful when displayed in a pretty container. One of my favourites - and I have a few - would have to be Narcissus ‘Paper White’ but I often find these quite difficult to procure. They’re no doubt very popular, with their miniature white clusters and delicate perfume which is simply perfect later in the year. The traditional method is to plant the bulbs in boxes, preferably in well-draining bulb fibre, then put them

outside in a sheltered corner and cover them in sand to cut out the light. A more modern method is to plant the bulbs in bulb fibre in the pot they will be displayed in then put them in a black plastic bag and keep them in a dark shed or basement. Either way the bulbs need to be out in the cold for up to 10 weeks to trigger root growth, although

Narcissus ‘Paper White’ may be ready after four to six weeks. Make sure they don’t dry out completely, and when you are nearing the 10-week mark check on their progress to make sure they are close to sprouting leaves. Then bring them inside at the beginning of December, starting them off in a cool room so it is not too much of a shock to the system and putting them back in a cooler room if they look like they are going to peak too soon.

If you have gone for the oldfashioned method of growing them in boxes or modules and covering them with sand, you can put them into their final pots when you bring them in. You don’t have to limit yourself to Christmas bulbs: start a new pot of bulbs off every two or three weeks and you will have spring-scented rooms in the depths of winter. Good contenders include Crocus, Muscari and small flowered Tulips and these are all available in the Shop.

More strongly-scented are hyacinths. These are very easy to come by, and if you’re planting them indoors be sure to buy those which have been prepared for this (bulbs for indoor forcing have been cold-treated in advance so they think it’s now time to start producing flowers). This year, I’ll be growing hyacinths in bulb vases. It’s really easy: just put each one in a bulb vase (ensure the base of the bulb isn’t quite touching the water), pop them in a cool and dark place (mine are in a kitchen cupboard) and leave them until the green shoots appear at the top of the bulb. The roots will grow downwards into the water and this should be changed every week or so to keep it fresh. Once the green shoots come, you can move the bulbs somewhere a bit warmer - ideally a north-facing window - for them to bloom. Continue to change the water

periodically, and to turn the container so the plants don’t lean over in one direction. Fruitful introductions If you are planning to establish a new tree in your garden then the autumn is a good time to plant but also to discover new varieties. One tree which has been grabbing the gardening headlines this year is a new Crab Apple called Malus ‘Aros’. It collected a major trade prize for the best new tree and seeing the tree for real you can see why! The upright tree produces gorgeous bright purple/pink flowers in the spring which develop into very dark red/maroon persistent small crab apples in the autumn. However, in the spring the leaves emerge shiny dark burgundy to black turning slightly green with age but retaining the amazing sheen, and this gives it great presence in the garden. It compactness means it is good

for growing in a reasonably large pot on the patio or to provide a wildlife haven in the smallest of gardens. You’ll be seeing a new apple variety too, called Malus ‘Surprize’ at the Garden Centre from the late autumn. You may have come across the fruits in the supermarkets last year when a Herefordshire grower supplied them to one of the major supermarket chains. The fruits have a brilliant, glossy golden orange skin, however, the real fun starts when you take a bite and see the amazing pink flesh inside. It was named ‘Surprize’ because of the fantastic reaction it gets. The aromatic apples are firm fleshed, crisp and very juicy with a delicious flavour. If picked in September and stored well it is still excellent up to Christmas. This new variety will be available as a maiden tree from November onwards.
