Thornborough Village BONFIRE & FIREWORKS Saturday 5th November 2011 - 7.00 pm Traditional Guy Fawkes Night on Saturday 5th November 2011 The bonfire and firework display gate opens at 7:00 pm, but all are invited to join the traditional village Torchlit Procession that starts at 6:30 pm from the Two Brewers, High Street, Thornborough on Saturday 5th November. The procession proceeds directly up the Nash Road to the venue on the outskirts of the village. Tickets on sale at the Two Brewers from 6pm – this avoids queuing at the venue gate. Thornborough Village is just off the A421. From Milton Keynes, turn right at the Lone Tree Pub about two miles before Buckingham. There is plenty of room for parking along the High Street and Village Green for visitors to the event. For safety reasons parking is prohibited along the Nash Road by the venue. There is no parking at the venue.

The gate opens at 7:00 pm and is at the ‘Thornborough’ village sign on the Nash Road. Entry for the event is £5-00 for adults, £3 for Senior Citizens and children. The fire will be lit at 7:15pm and the Aerial Firework display is from 7:30 to 8:00 pm. If you want to bring a Guy, bring it to the front of the crowd barrier near to the bonfire, a marshal will throw it onto the bonfire, so don’t use Dad’s best cricket pullover! In case shelter is required, there is a big marquee on the field. Hot pork rolls, soft drinks, mulled wine, hot dogs and more will be on sale in the marquee. Keep your car cosy! As the temperatures start to plummet and we pile on the layers and turn up the heating, spare a thought for your metal-clad friend freezing on the driveway! We rely on our cars, particularly when the weather is bad, and with ever-diminishing public transport availability and especially in rural areas, being able to use the car even when it’s several degrees below zero is vital. With these three basic checks and top-ups, your car can run more reliably when it’s chilly, and you can rest assured that you are more protected from unwelcome breakdowns due to the adverse effects of winter on your vehicle. •The first thing to be sure of is that your tyres are up to scratch. Wet or icy roads make driving more hazardous than usual, and insufficient tread on your tyres is not only illegal, it can be dangerous to you and other road users.

Please mention Buckingham & Winslow IN B US INE S S MA GAZ I N E when responding to advertisers. TO ADVERTISE TELEPHONE 01386 424898 WWW.INBUSINESSMAGS.CO.UK

The current legal minimum is just 1.6mm of tread, but for winter driving a safer minimum is 3mm, to allow for better water displacement when driving on wet roads. •Antifreeze is the next check – without an adequate concentration in your car’s cooling system, it could freeze solid, meaning that the car won’t go, and leading to very costly repair bills. A number of testing devices are available, to assess the level of antifreeze in the cooling system. Allow the engine to cool down for at least 30 minutes before checking the coolant level. Add a 50:50 mixture of antifreeze and water to the top up tank until the level reaches the Max line, run the engine for a short while to thoroughly distribute the mixture, allow the engine to cool again and test the coolant. If the concentration is still very low, add a stronger solution to bring it up to the correct strength. •The battery comes under increased strain in winter, so make sure it’s kept in good condition and consider charging it up if you only ever do short journeys. Headlights, the heater, radio and in-car chargers all place a drain on the battery, so make sure they are all switched off when you stop the car, so that all the battery’s effort can concentrate on starting it again when it’s chilly the next day.

Don’t Worry, Be Happy! Have you ever had negative thoughts buzzing around inside your mind when you’re feeling low, such as “why do I bother?” or “I’m so useless”. Long term and excessive worry creates anxiety, stress, physical health impairments and mental disturbances, as well as headaches, high blood pressure and depression. What are you worried about? Fear is the only rational reason that people tend not to change their habits, and so they continue to live with their worries. But it’s not all bad news... you may not be able to change your situation, but you CAN change the thoughts and feelings that you attach to it. This will enable you to have a more positive outlook and gain the strength that you need to change your life for the better. Complimentary treatments such as Hypnotherapy can really help you to make a difference.

Fireworks Fun While you and the family enjoy the amazing atmosophere, the fantastic fireworks, and a few hot dogs, remember remember that animals are not great fans of fireworks. If you are a pet owner, here are a few tips to make fireworks night less stressful for your animal.

For cats and dogs:

·Keep them in the house and create a den for them to hide in so they feel safe. ·During the weeks around fireworks night, walk your dog before it gets dark. ·Create distractions. Give new toys or chews. ·Turn the television up a little louder than usual. Ensure all curtains are closed. ·Make sure all windows, doors, cat flaps are

securely closed to prevent escape. ·Provide extra litter trays as cats are to be confined to the house. ·An owner’s anxiety can make the problem worse so act normally and praise calm behaviour. Don’t try to cuddle or comfort your pet. ·Try not to leave your pets alone during fireworks. ·Don’t be angry if your pet displays fearful behaviour. For small animals: ·If possible, bring hutches inside into a quiet room or garage. If this is not an option, turn the hutch around so it faces a wall or fence. ·Provide extra bedding for your pets to burrow into so they feel secure. ·Cover any cages or hutches with thick blankets to muffle the noise of the fireworks, though make sure there’s plenty of ventilation.

Written by Chris Day Buckingham Nurseries & Garden Centre 01280 822133

Plant bulbs for a brighter future They take little effort to plant, yet spring bulbs provide such welcome and guaranteed colour, says Buckingham Garden Centre’s Chris Day. It would be hard to imagine a spring without glorious bright and cheerful Daffodils peeking through the soil, Crocus and towering Tulips creating that colour explosion we all know and love. A chilled, more informal approach to planting many of our popular bulbs this season may be the best way of giving our garden a much more ‘relaxed’ look. Naturalising and scattering bulbs in an ad-hoc fashion and planting them literally where they fall, in a random pattern, is often used for the likes of Narcissi, Crocus, Daffodils, Fritillaria Meleagris, Snowdrops and Tulips. You can plant them in large lawns, under trees and to form

contemporary drifts within your borders. Remember that these bulbs are to be left undisturbed for many years so the initial planting should be well spaced, so if you have thrown the bulbs over your shoulder, and planted them where they fall you may have to tweak the spacings. Although the display may look a little thin at first they will soon fill out. It may be necessary to 'top up' the display with fresh bulbs from time to time. Here are a few tips to help you along… 1. Bulb planters, both long and short handled, are ideal for planting larger bulbs. Make sure the hole is deep enough and push the plug (that’s the core of soil the planter removes) back firmly. Not ideal for small bulbs such as crocus.

The Garden in November 2. Lift a square of turf, around 30cm (12in) in size and then plant underneath using a trowel. Press the turf back firmly and plant a few bulbs between each square to maintain the natural appearance. 3. Some bulbs can be difficult to establish in grass, especially Fritillaries. So to remedy the problem, pot up 3-5 bulbs in John Innes No. 2 in a 9cm (3.5in) pot then plant out in their final position when coming into growth. Small species Narcissus also respond well to this treatment and it is a good method of filling any gaps as adding bulbs to an existing display at the normal autumn planting time can be quite tricky. Elsewhere in the garden, creating colourful displays of mixed bulbs in pots is done by “layering”. Start at the bottom of the pot with Narcissi, followed by a layer containing Tulips, then finishing with smaller bulbs like Crocus or Iris for the layer closest to the top of the pot.

Larger pots mean more layers are possible. The overall effect is really pleasing as the bulbs push through and flower over a period of many weeks. The look created in the pot is much less orchestrated and formal than simply planting just one species or colour. Bulbs create a lovely sense of surprise as we tend to plant them and forget them! However, the legacy of this kind of planting, say in drifts rather than solid clumps, shows the benefits of giving Mother Nature a helping hand. To p T i p Dig a hole wide and deep enough for your bulbs. Work out the planting depth by roughly measuring the bulb from base to tip and doubling or tripling this length this figure is the rough planting depth. So, for example, a 5cm (2in) high bulb should be 10-15cm (4-6in) below soil level. cont page 20
