October 2017 ISSUE

Welcome... to the edition of the Life in Brackley magazine,

Ok, so it’s still a while away, so I’m not going to mention

that word, the one with the Nativity plays, jolly chap

wearing red with the big white beard and you

know what I’m getting at! It’s creeping up on us,

and I like to be prepared, so October is the month for me to

get making those gifts which take time to mature, so that

they’re ready to give at you-know- what time – that one at

the end of December! The beauty of getting these presents

made now, is that the fruits you need to prepare them, are in

abundance this month, so you’re using what Nature gives, to

make presents for others

– what could be nicer? see page 18,19 for my ideas..

Have a good month and don’t forget

the clocks go back.

With Autumn well underway, it feels as though Summer’s been over for ages, but we are still in British Summer Time – for now! Back in March, when the clocks went forward an hour, it didn’t feel much like Summer, either, but we have enjoyed the benefit of that hour change in the evenings, with extra daylight enabling activities to continue a little longer; a jog or bike ride, walking the dog, tending the garden, enjoying a barbecue. On Sunday October 29th, the clocks go back, as we return to GMT. An extra hour of darkness in the evenings is compensated by a little extra light for the morning commute – but

not for long, as Winter nears and the days get much shorter. It’s not all doom and gloom, though; making the hour change is much easier nowadays. The majority of electronic gadgets will sort out the time out for themselves, if they are set to auto update, so you may not need to do anything at all, just enjoy the extra hour in bed on Sunday morning!

Why make a Lasting Power of Attorney? At any stage of your life, you or your partner may be unfortunate enough to have an illness or accident that may affect your mental capacity to make decisions. These decisions may be about your financial affairs or your medical treatment. If you are no longer able to decide for yourself, have you put plans in place to appoint someone who can?

All of these issues can be resolved by making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). There are two types of LPA – one for finances and one for health. You can make one or both, appoint different Attorneys under each LPA and express ‘preferences’ and ‘instructions’ to outline how you envisage the arrangement working. Most people would prefer not to think about the circumstances in which LPAs are used, but a terrible situation can be much worse if no one is able to access funds or if your loved ones do not have the legal authority to carry out the medical wishes you have expressed to them.

Brackley Computer Repair & Support

The response to our computer repair & support advertising in Buckingham has been overwhelming and we now have lots of new clients on our books, many of whom have signed up to our monthly, remote support cover. Below are just some of our clients’ thoughts on our services: “I was delighted with your initial response to my request for help. Unlike many others in your ‘trade’ you were very prompt in

diagnosing and providing a permanent solution to my problem at a very reasonable price. Furthermore you were very patient in dealing with minor questions once the software system had been rebuilt. I have no hesitation in recommending you to anyone in a similar position to myself.” Nicholas Reynell, Brackley “I must say how much I appreciated your help in bringing my computer back to life. I really thought it was going to need replacing but you came and fixed

it in a short space of time at an extremely cost effective price and also extremely quick – it was 3 days I think. I would certainly recommend you to any person with a computer problem. Many thanks for a prompt, efficient and rapid service.” Bryan Trinder, Brackley “Thank you very much for your e-mail. I am very happy with the work PChelp4U did to my computer. It works like a dream. Once again thank-you. If needed I will call again for help.” Mrs Dunn, Brackley

Edible gifts – captur

Green tomato chutney is a great gift – there are plenty of wonderful recipes around, in old cookbooks and online, so choose your favourite! Mine always includes apples, sultanas, all the tomatoes which haven’t ripened before the first frosts threaten, plenty of spiced vinegar, brown sugar, onions…. mmm! It’s a slow make, so be prepared to spend a while stirring, and creates a strong smell in the kitchen, and be sure to line the jam-jar lids, to stop the vinegar eating through. Jars need to be sterilised and filled whilst they’re hot, and I like to use the self-sealing jar lids, and put the tops on as soon as they are filled, so that as it cools, it makes a seal and keeps the content fresh whilst the flavour matures. You’ll need to keep this chutney for at least a month, to allow the flavours to mingle and reach their best, and once the jar is opened, pop it in the fridge to stop any loss of loveliness!

Sloe gin is a fabulous present, and keeps for years, due to the sugar and alcohol content! The recipe is really simple, and all you need to mix the ingredients and soak the fruit, is a big old sweet tub or Kilner jar. For every 500g of sloes, add 500g of sugar – or less, depending on taste – and a litre of gin. Make sure the sloes have had a frost on them before picking, or you can cheat by

re nature’s harvest! popping them into the freezer the night before. Leave to mature, rotating the jar every day or so, for at least 2 months, then strain through muslin into new or sterilised glass bottles, and cork or seal the caps on, to keep it at its best. The longer you keep it before straining the fruit out, the better it will be – so you may wish to mature yours in the bottles, and give as a gift with the fruit still in place, to keep it maturing nicely!

Halloween crafts

Although it seems like the kids have only been back at school for five minutes, the week before Halloween is half term – and if you’re keen to keep the kids busy, and minimise the mess, then here is a crafty idea to keep them out of mischief! Papier mache puppet heads – make ghostly decorations to hang up outside your home – great fun to make with the kids, very simple and effective!

• Start with a balloon, blown up about halfway, to an oval shape about 20cm high. Knot the end and place the balloon in a jam-jar, to keep it still. • Mix up 200ml of PVA glue and water solution, about half and half. • Tear strips of newspaper and dunk them in the glue mixture, and cover

Make Puppets Heads 22

the balloon all over in the strips, smoothing them down with a wide paintbrush and some more glue solution. • Let each layer dry in a warm room, or more quickly with help from a hairdryer, and then add another layer – repeat at least 3 times until you have a solid layer over the balloon, which can’t be dented if you squeeze gently. Now you’re ready to shape the puppet’s features, which are made from squished-up bits of newspaper, mixed with the glue solution. You may wish to tip the puppet head over, so that the face is uppermost, to stop gravity from making the features slide off! Strips of newspaper can be applied, like a plaster, to smooth out the nose, mouth and ears, and eyes can be made hollow, so that holes can be created once the head is complete. • Once you’ve completed shaping your puppet’s face – and made it as weird and wonderful as you wish – and it has dried, then you can add the finishing touches. Paint it all over with poster paints, or powder paint mixed with PVA glue for a glossy, waterproof finish. Add hair made from wool, or straw – whatever you fancy!

To advertise at a price thats right for you

• Carefully use a pin to pop the balloon, and poke a pencil through where you want the eyes to glow. • Carefully cut off the very base of the puppet, or enlarge a hold left by the neck of the balloon, and insert a battery-powered tea-light. • Glue flowing fabric (an old bed sheet, or shirt) all around the bottom of the puppet’s head, just above this opening, to make its ‘clothes’ and pop an elastic band around the ‘neck’ to hold the battery light in place, and make it more realistic! • A paperclip can be used to make a hook to go through the top of the head, and string or thread attached to this – so that you can hang up your spooky puppet!

Brackley Squash 1st. team breezed through the summer season in the Oxfordshire leagues to claim the division 4 title following on from winning division 5 last season. The club were pleased to procure the services of new talent this summer which considerably strengthened the squad. The players won a tremendous 12 out of 12 wins without being unduly stretched. Although they were penalised harshly in the last match for a minor infringement of the rules (with the game being awarded to their opponents), it didn’t take the shine off the achievement. They were so far ahead of the opposition it made no difference to the final outcome. Well done to the main squad of Jason Burgon, Tim Walton, David Millard, Wayne Dobbins, Martin Hall (capt.), and Tim Bardsley. Meanwhile the 2nd. team had a very enjoyable outing this summer in the Northants leagues for the first time in some years. Playing high up in division 2 proved to be a challenge, but some success was achieved in the doubles matches which were hugely entertaining to watch.

Autumn pet care – With the nights drawing in and temperatures dropping, my thoughts turn to the pets which live in hutches outdoors – such as rabbits and guinea pigs – which need a little more protection to keep them comfy through the Autumn and Winter weather.

For the hutch itself, a waterproof cover which rolls up out of the way, is a great solution to continuous driving rain – keeping the bedding, and your furry friends, warm and dry. Make sure there’s still adequate ventilation, and that when the sun shines, your pets don’t overheat.

Pets which graze in a run on the lawn, as part of their daily routine, can continue to enjoy stretching their legs in the sunshine, but make sure they have a covered area, to keep them out of an unexpected rain shower, and an area with a floor, so that they don’t have to sit on the cold, wet ground and wait for you to get home and put them in their cosy hutch! Don’t use the run when the grass is frosty,

– keep out the cold! or in bad weather – the odd day or so in their hutch will be fine, if they have plenty of hay to provide roughage in their diet and there’s room for them to stand up fully and plenty of space to run around. Just add in more play items, such as large cardboard tubes for guinea pigs, or fruitwood to gnaw for rabbits, and spend a little more time with your pet on a day when it hasn’t been out to play.

When the really cold, wintry weather sets in, it’s a great plan to move the hutch into a shed or the garage, or to use an indoor cage in a quiet room, to keep pets warm enough during spells when the day temperature is below freezing. If your pets need to stay outside, provide plenty of fluffed-up hay and straw to keep them cosy, make sure their drinking bottles don’t freeze and add just a little more energy to their diet, to help them build an insulating layer of fat, to keep out the chill.

Their feathery or tufted flower heads and graceful foliage can catch the light and add movement and structure to the garden. Some will stand well into winter, when a coating of hoar frost will set them off to a tee.

Try planting with tall Verbena bonariensis (see pic) and cone flower (Echinacea purpurea) Off with their heads If you have plants with beautiful seed heads, such as poppies, eryngiums, teasels, they can be dried for showing indoors over winter. Cut them with plenty of stem, and hang them in an airy place to dry. Enjoy!

Perennials can be cut back now, to get the neat look for the winter. Some subjects can be left if they are still looking good.

Kitchen garden A quick reminder to finish lifting potatoes, pick the last of the runner beans. Planting for spring can include spring cabbage (don’t forget to net them to keep off the birds) and sowing broad beans.

Fine range of great plants Finally, it’s the perfect time to dig the soil, to allow winter frosts to break down clods for a fine tilth in the spring . To improve fertility and structure, incorporate organic matter at the same time whether good garden compost or well-rotted manure. A nice note to finish on!

Brackley record a blistering beginning... Brackley Town's National League North campaign kicked off on 5 August and with a flurry of early games a good start is imperative for any team aiming for the top come next April. August hosted no fewer than seven games and Brackley recorded a blistering beginning to the season with six wins and a draw in those 7 games to go into September joint top of the table alongside Harrogate Town. National League North has become even more fiercely competitive this year with more teams going full-time and the likes of former league sides such as York City and Southport being relegated into the division but hot favourites to return to the level

above at the first time of asking. In Saints' opening 7 games they conceded just 2 goals with a remarkable defensive record. At the other end they got among the goals with Jimmy Armson netting 6 times and Lee Ndlovu 3 times among the scorers. With 6 further league games to come in September and the start of the FA Cup campaign Brackley fans have much to look forward to. To recognise his team's progress

manager Kevin Wilkin was named as National League North Manager of the Month, an accolade he received twice last season. A further indication of the attractive and winning football being played at St James Park is that the attendances in the first 4 home games increased by 40% over last season.
