In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called “brilliants,” and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in—and betray his own kind. From Marcus Sakey, “a modern master of suspense” (Chicago Sun-Times) and “one of our best storytellers” (Michael Connelly), comes an adventure that’s at once breakneck thriller and shrewd social commentary; a gripping tale of a world fundamentally different and yet horrifyingly similar to our own, where being born gifted can be a terrible curse.

Reviews “"Brilliance" is a sort of near-future science-fiction-fantasy-detective novel-thriller, a bit outside of my usual genres, though I indulge in them (individually) on occasion. However, first the cover, then the interesting premise, and finally the good reviews intrigued me enough to take a chance on it and I'm so glad that I did. It starts off fast and maintains the momentum through the end. It's well-written and has interesting characters and is unpredictable and doesn't devolve into silliness at any point, remaining quite convincing throughout. "Brilliance" is an excellent choice for summer reading, and especially for traveling.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Brilliance explores the significance of terrorism in today's society and the all-too-human fearful reaction to others who are "different". In the story, the government removes children tested as gifted from their homes and places them into highly regulated academies to prevent future abnorm dissonance. They are one step away from micro-chipping the brilliants. And the understandably angry reaction from the abnorms results in terrorist activities. One character compares treatment of abnorms as similar to Japanese internment camps during WWII. As Cooper gets deeper and deeper into the criminal world he has fought against for years, he begins to see, and understand, the source of their anger. It is a very well written story with sympathetic and layered characters without the usual ham-fisted

black and white interpretation of good vs. evil. There are multiple red herrings and twists to the story and yes, everybody is lying. The last hundred pages are written to tear through at breakneck speed. And the very last sentence on the last page, to me, was a wonderful surprise. I loved the book and I intend to explore more of Marcus Sakey's writing because he had my attention the whole time.
