Reviews “This book made me laugh, made me cry, and made me sigh. The characters came to life. They could have been members of my own family, they were so real. The way Thomas felt and his views on 9/11, after losing his wife and son, seemed so desperate and heart felt, and although I did not lose anyone close to me during that time, I could understand why he would feel the way he did because the author did such a wonderful job describing it. Cathy was also easy to relate to. She went from being a Hollywood beauty queen to a scarred heroine, and I just thought the changes in her were absolutely magnificent. I thought at first I would hate her for being so beautiful and perfect, but then she lost her beauty and her world crumbled and I wanted her to have it all back. In fact, I couldn't help but root for her and Thomas. The sex scenes were not pornographic as they often are in romance novels, though that rarely bothers me as long as it flows naturally with the story and doesn't seem forced or gratuitous. These scenes were not injected into the story as an afterthought because the author felt she had better put in some sex for good measure. Every scene in this book flowed so naturally that the readers can easily imagine themselves at Crossroads. I am ashamed that I have never heard of this author before reading this book, but I am happy to say that I have found a new favorite in Deborah Smith.”
“I am in hog heaven to have Deb Smith's new book! I enjoy everything she writes, but it's been too long since we've seen a quintessential Deborah Smith book in the tradition of those I own and reread until they are about to fall apart, like On Bear Mountain and Blue Willow and A Place to Call Home and When Venus Fell and....well, you know. All those yummy, dive in and wallow, gloriously colorful and gut-wrenching, truly Southern books that no one else can write. I ordered The Crossroads Cafe the second I knew it existed, and when I got it a few days ago, I opened it up, read the first page--and knew. Just KNEW. Hair standing up on the back of my neck, expire from bliss happy, that was me--and the book lived up to every last bit of anticipation. I just wish I could erase my memory (though time is doing that too well, thank you) so I could start all over this second. It deals with important issues in a time when young girls are starving to death in the name of beauty, and it hearkens us back to a world in which neighbors care for neighbors and the definition of family is greater than blood. This book will take up residence on my keeper shelf with all the others of hers, and it will be read again and again. It's that good.
For anyone who's ever loved a Deborah Smith book, you are gonna be soooo happy, and for those who haven't tried one, who love powerful emotion and gorgeous prose, run, don't walk your fingers to order this (new, please, so we can keep having more of these lovelies in the future.) Thank you, Bellebooks, from the bottom of my heart, for giving me back what I thought I'd lost!
