Reviews “Normally I don't like books that have switching character POVs because it usually confuses me since most authors can't pull it off without characters sounding too much alike. However Smith's characterization was really good and not confusing. I must admit that this is the first book I've ever read by this author, and I really enjoyed it to the point that I plan on getting more of her books next year. The plot, despite being a little cliche, was really emotionally charged and well developed. I could relate to most of the characters by the end of it due to the superb and colorful writing style. By the time the plot was laid out and in full swing, I could not put my Kindle down because of how much action took place. It's been years since I've read a book that I stayed up all night to read, and it was a really enjoyable read. I think that Deborah Smith's skills were how she developed her characters and dialogue so eloquently. Her word usuage was quite imaginative and realistic for dialogue. Even though she had crafted the majority of her characters to have bad pasts(burn victim, family died in towers on 9/11, child abuse, etc), she didn't make them all wangsty. She made some of them suicidual at times, but she had made them find reasons to live. I My favorite character was Delta due to how she never gave up on people. She was very much a Southern gal, but I found her character to be very strong willed. With her making biscuits so much to feed other characters, it made me want some biscuits. She never faltered on anyone, and they all repaid her when she needed them the most. Delta had helped her cousin Cathy to discover how to live again. Both Cathy and Thomas were really cute together. They had their moments were they were really passionate for each other with some really graphic sex scenes. They needed each other to be whole again and to find a reason to live. Both of them had tragic pasts, but together they helped each other out.”

“It seems like a stereotypical slow-paced romance and boom, turns into inspirational novel? Totally wasn't expecting that! The book is a slow starter, definately. I picked it up and put it down countless times but kept picking

at it until about a third of the way in I realized that I was hooked. Pros: -The author is an excellent writer -Characters not so different from normal people (in how they think, how they feel, react, etc) -Characters not really stereotyped (mountain men and divas) (with the exception of the goat) -vivid writing -plot turns, development, "twists" Cons: -a little predictable (but then again, so was "The Passion" and everyone still went to see that ;-)) -... having adopted kids together but not wanting to commit to each other (even they weren't technically cohabiting)(not a prude, just all about external responsibility and stability when children are involved) Thoughts: -Sex scenes weren't all over the book as some of the negative reviewers suggest, and not extremely graphic (only the initial one really went into detail). They actually had not a very big place in the whole plotline (we know it was happening, but it wasn't really integral for the author to dwell on them explicitly, which was suitable for this book) -The author was definitely striving for a triumph of the spirit, which in the end I believe this book executed nicely. She made her point in a non-cliche way but subtlety as well. Ok, well, subtle as attacking you with a towel-wrapped frying pan, but I appreciated the cushioning! :-) Overall, I think that this was an extremely well written book and, while initially a very slow/painstakingly slow read, would definitely recommend.
