Reviews “For those of you who like your legal suspense served up with humanity and depth, this is the book for you. In all her stories, Julie Compton captures the nuance of human interaction. It's this which provides the beating heart inside the tense action of her thrillers. She's a courageous writer, in that she's willing to allow her stories to reflect a degree of moral ambiguity which makes the ride all the more worthwhile. Real life doesn't provide conveniently easy answers, nor do the lives of Compton's characters. She's a thinking person's writer, and in Keep No Secrets, the super-satisfying sequel to her Tell No Lies, you'll find you have plenty to think about.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“This was a book that I didn't stop thinking about just because I read the last page and turned off my Kindle. The author had done such an amazing job of making the characters real--flaws and all--that my emotions were sewn right into the storyline. I could relate to, and have compassion for each and every one of the main characters.
Does this mean I condone their actions and attitudes? Certainly NOT! But even in the case of Jack and his act of adultery, he didn't choose his actions because he was an evil man...he was simply human. Not that his actions were excusable in any way, shape, or form...but when I say he was "simply human", I mean that most people at one time or another have made foolish mistakes, fallen into the temptation to do something wrong, or have actions they would give anything to be able to change. What I most appreciated about this book is the fact that it didn't allow me to put things into the "black and white" category that I so wanted to do. I wanted to despise Jack for cheating on his wife; I wanted to hate Jenny for being the "other woman"; I wanted everyone to fit into their little mold, so that I could enjoy a story where the hero is unquestionably upright and moral, and the villain is obvious and totally despicable. What I got was a story that gave me cause for moral outrage, while reminding me that sometimes life is messy, reality sucks, and people are not perfect. It made me think about the fact that sometimes our worst mistakes start out as seemingly inconsequential choices that snowball beyond our control. (For example, Jack didn't just step into the act of adultery; his mistake began years before in pursuing a friendship--as a married man--with a single woman. To my way of thinking, the outcome of this friendship was both inexcusable...yet natural. It wasn't as much about the people involved as it was the fact that different choices should have been made YEARS prior.) In short, I would highly recommend this book, even if the idea of reading about a cheating spouse would normally turn you off.
