A Region of Endless Adventure

LATIN AMERICA

From its northern reaches below the USA to its southern tip in the Pacific Ocean and everything in between, Latin America is a region steeped in history and ancient culture. Despite being one of the most urbanised areas in the world, it is home to some of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders and for years has attracted travellers, adventurers, and vacationers from far and wide. Comprising over 20 countries and dependent territories, across an expanse of almost 20 million square kilometres, it would be a fool’s errand to attempt to visit them all in one trip. A better approach would be to tackle it one country or region at a time, becoming fully immersed in the culture and geography of the area. South America is home to The Amazon Rainforest, a vast region of 1.4 billion acres where one in ten of all animal species on Earth can be found, and many others are waiting to be discovered. South America includes twelve sovereign states – Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela – and two non-sovereign areas – French Guiana, an overseas department of France, and the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory 6

(though disputed by Argentina). Within it runs just over 6500km of winding rivers, not least of which is the mighty Amazon. The serpentine waterway stretches for almost 6500km, snakes its way through eight countries (Guyana, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru), and has hosted numerous explorers on epic quests. But, the Amazon River is far from Latin America’s only notable aquatic feature: the spectacular Iguazú Falls, sit between Brazil and Argentina and are consistently in contention to be crowned as the world’s greatest waterfall; Angel Falls in Venezuela is equally impressive, and also happens to be the world’s tallest waterfall; Chile’s southern fjords wait to be explored by new visitors; the world’s highest navigable body of water, Lake Titicaca, lies on the border between Peru and Bolivia; the list goes on. Land lovers too will find no shortage of alluring adventure: crossing the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, the world’s largest salt desert; observing the region’s magnificent wildlife like the Red Macaws in Brazil, Blue-Footed Boobies and Giant Tortoises on the Galapagos Islands, or the adorable Pygmy Marmoset in the western Amazon Basin; climbing the

Latin America

Andes in Peru to explore Machu Picchu; and that’s just to name a few of the more well-known attractions. Latin American culture, particularly its music, dances, and cuisine, is among the most wellknown and best-loved in the world. The salsa, samba, and tango all find their origins in countries of South America, as do the trova, passillos, forro, and merengue. And of course there’s hardly a country in the world where Latin American cuisine can’t be found, and rightly so seeing as almost every region of the world had an influence on the cuisine. The similar but unique churrasco, empanada, tamal, and chipá of different countries, Brazil’s traditional feijoada stew of black beans and meat, Mexico’s saucy mole poblano, the bandeja paisa of Colombia, Argentina’s Asado – a meat-lover’s dream, Chile’s surf and turf curanto, and many other traditional dishes and delicacies from every corner of the continent. History runs deep in the region and in many places colonial towns have survived almost untouched since their establishment in the 18th century. Their more modern counterparts have grown into hubs of prosperity, boasting an ever-increasing number of boutique and luxury hotels, catering to the growing number of global leisure travellers. Increased tourism has also stoked other industries, to the point that the region’s restaurants, bars, museums, and cities themselves have become as much of a reason to visit as any of the abundance of natural wonders. A mix of the familiar and the exotic, with something that will appeal to every type of traveller, Latin America is a destination of endless surprises, delights, and adventures.

Bogotá

In addition to its wealth of natural and cultural treasures, Bogotá is a premier business travel destination – World Travel Awards awarded it as the best in this category in all of Latin America. The country’s government has put considerable effort into developing the city as a leading business destination, boosting foreign investment, and increasing economic ties to the world. Over recent years it has grown into one of the biggest economies in South America, with an impressively diverse business portfolio. A thriving gas and oil industry underpins much of the growth, but everything from beer breweries to tech enterprises are springing up across the city. Much of this success is thanks to the people who live and work in the city. Bogotá has an impressive education system which extends across all levels and includes 115 higher education institutions. As a result, the city is home to over four million workers and close to one million higher education students. Part of what makes Bogotá such an attractive business destination is its status as a transport hub for the entire continent. The recently renovated El Dorado International airport serves numerous non-stop flights to and from many international ports – New York, Mexico City, and Sao Paolo can all be reached within five hours – and direct departures to almost anywhere on the continent. In addition, the city’s increased safety has made it much more alluring for discerning travellers. On the ground, Bogotá boasts excellent hosting and event venues, offering close to 200 unique spaces to hold meetings and gatherings. The city’s infrastructure is a third of the entire country’s, and has seen Bogotá become the country’s most popular destination for congresses, fairs and events. 15

BEST IN TRAVEL

The city is also home to a variety of hotels and resorts ranging from basic, comfortable accommodation to expressions of the utmost opulence. The hotel infrastructure is among the best in the world and meets even the highest international quality standards. Notable among its offerings is Hotel 101 Park House Suites & Spa, which is located in the heart of the city and is a short from the city centre. The five-star boutique hotel is an exemplary model for the best of Columbian service and hospitality, and any traveller would be fortunate to experience it. On top of all these considerable offerings, Columbia and Bogotá have furthered incentivized foreign investors by creating free trade zones which offer an income tax of 15%, no custom duty for goods imported into the zones and VAT exemption for inputs bought on the local market. Despite what it might sound like, Bogotá is by no means all work and no play. It is a city of diverse offerings where leisure and entertainment exist in harmony with the more corporate aspects of life, a perfect balance for the modern business person. The city’s numerous dining options, which incorporate a range of styles, tastes and cuisines, has seen it rise as one of South America’s gastronomic capitals – ideal for business lunches and dinners, or to impress colleagues and prospective clients. There are also a plethora of museums, art galleries, theatres and live music venues across the city, each with a unique appeal and promising a memorable experience. With such prospects, it is not surprising that numerous companies, including Globant, Citibank, PwC, and Hewlett Packard have chosen Bogotá for their regional headquarters, with many more sure to follow soon. Bogotá is more than the sum of its parts; it is an experiential city where every effort to explore, experience, and indulge in its people, culture, and business is rewarded handsomely.

In October explora will launch a conservation and plan and release a book which is the result of working with local scientists to study flora, fauna and archaeology in its private 7500-acre Puritama Nature Reserve in the Atacama Desert. Together with this, scientists involved with the program will host a series of talks throughout the region, culminating in a seminar to be held at explora Atacama. The program is also an opportunity for participants to showcase their qualities and affords explora the opportunity to identify and nurture young talent. PERU Located in the west of South America, Peru is a simple country with a complex heart and an ancient soul. Once home to the mighty Inca Empire, remnants of the ancient civilisation can be found across the country, but there is much more to this South American destination than its rich and interesting history. Peruvian cuisine is considered among the best, if not the best, in the world – a fact which was highlighted when it was awarded as the World’s Best Culinary Destination at the 2014 World Travel Awards. Its spectacular culinary creations are the product of its long diverse history, which includes Spanish, African and Chinese, Japanese and Italian influences to mention but a few. Each new culture introduced new tastes, combinations and flavours, which further diversified the Peruvian offering and resulted in some truly unique food fusions. In fact, it is entirely possible to speculate that without these foreign injections wonderful dishes like ceviche, corazón, and carapulcra would never have come to be, and what a sad reality that would be.

AN ANCIENT COUNTRY WITH CONTEMPORARY FLAIR

Peru

The sheer depth of Peru’s history is difficult to fathom; it was home to Caral, the first civilization in the Americas; it birthed the incredible Inca Empire; and was home to the Chancas, Chachapoyas, Mohicas, and Wari. Almost all of this can still be seen in what was left behind. Although Machu Picchu is arguably its most well-known site, it is far from its only one; Chan Chan is the largest pre-Columbian ruins in all the Americas; the fortress of Kuelap has been standing since the 9th century; the Nazca lines and geoglyphs continue to astound travellers on a daily basis. To witness such wonders first hand is a humbling, memorable experience which every visitor to the region should try to live. The country’s wonderful natural diversity also makes it the ideal destination for adventurers, thrill-seekers, and explorers. Seemingly hand-crafted to suit the needs of the active traveller, in Peru activities like paragliding, rafting, biking, hiking, and zip lining are but a few drops in the ocean of adventuring possibilities.
