DOHA FORT One of the most stunning examples of early 20th century architecture in Qatar happens to be right in the centre of the city in the shape of Doha Fort. Also known as Al Koot Fort , it was built in 1927 and first used primarily as a police station to protect the nearby Souq Waqif.
It was also used as a jail, the square-shaped white fort has towers – three circular and one rectangular – crowned with traditional Qataristyle balements at each corner. The fort has been turned into a museum, and visitors can see local handicras on offer, including glasswork, oil painting and ceramics.

SOUQ WAQIF The Fort is a stone’s throw from the wonderfully atmospheric Souq Waqif - easily one of the most easily one of the most atmospheric markets in the Gulf - so when you’ve finished at the Fort head here for a spot of shopping. The crowded passageways are a cacophony of shopkeepers and food sellers peddling everything under the sun. DOHA DESERT No visit to Doha is complete without taking a trip into the desert – the true heart of Arabia. Virtually every tour operator offers a half or full day desert safari tour; aer dune driving you can have your hands henna’ed, then make like Lawrence of Arabia and ride a camel, before enjoying a desert sunset, Arabic barbecue and a bit of belly dancing.

With a backdrop of steep mountains, the bay of Dhayah has always been a very fertile area and has been seled in at least since the third millennium BC. A conical shaped hill at the edge of the palm gardens and at the foot of the mountains, served as a natural defense post for the oasis. People have used this hill since prehistoric times for selement and fortification alike. Today it is crowned by a fortress, built during the 19th century on the foundations of much older structures. It is the only hilltop fort still existing in the UAE and offers a fantastic view of the lush palm gardens, the sea and the dramatic mountains.
Sailing has traditionally been an integral part of Ras Al Khaimah's culture. Due to the favorable weather and water conditions, the emirate has been a destination of choice for sailors to practice their skills at sea. The Royal Yacht Club of Ras Al Khaimah, under the Patronage of HH Sheik Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, is a members club for sailing, yachting and water sports enthusiasts.
AL JAzIRAH AL HAMRA Al Jazirah Al Hamra is the last authentic and traditional town still standing in the United Arab Emirates. Once a small island, its inhabitants subsisted on maritime and pearl trading before they abandoned their houses in the middle of the 20th century, when the rush to modernized started. An undisturbed picture of life before the discovery of oil was le behind and preserved until today. This is a unique area for Ras Al Khaimah and the whole country. Al Jazirah Al Hamra shows all elements of a traditional town, including a fortress for defence purposes, a small market, several mosques and a variety of houses types. These range from simple buildings to ornate houses with courtyards which belonged to rich pearl mercahants. Al Jazirah Al Hamra is one of the best places to study traditional coral-stone architecture, used along the coast of the UAE.
JEBEL JAIS Jebel Jais is definitely the UAE’s tallest mountain and is every bit as exciting as a tall mountain should be. Rugged, at times wind -swept, valleys with sweeping views…and absolute isolation.

ATHENS Athens is the historical capital of Europe, with a long history, dating from the first selement in the Neolithic age. Mariam Ali Al rashdi, Founder and CEo of the Dohabased ontario Center for Special Education (oCSE), dedicates her life to promoting understanding and providing equal opportunities to all. During the recent Accessibility Forum in Doha she explained how her organisation worked alongside the SC to install a ‘sensory room’ at the Khalifa international Stadium, in order to deliver something truly groundbreaking for the World Cup.
“Qatar is building history,” Al rashdi said. “it is beyond a room with bubble tubs. it has never happened in the history of the World Cup that they have a room for people with cognitive and learning disabilities. “it’s very easy for us to get engineers to design those ramps for wheelchair access; it’s easy to have lights and devices to help people that are visually impaired or cannot hear – but it’s unheard of that people who have cognitive and learning disabilities have somewhere like this to visit within a stadium.” The room – gied by the oCSE to the SC – offers a ‘safe haven’ for people with disabilities to escape the sometimes overwhelming sensory overload a football stadium can create. it offers noise cancellation, so furnishings, mood lighting, relaxing music and brightly coloured sensory toys and equipment.

“With conditions such as autism we are not always able to know whether they understand what has gone on, including who has won and who has lost,” said Al rashdi. “But that doesn’t maer. But also for the adults, it was a joyous moment. people were able to see that we can be different, and we can be accepted as one.
