MUSCAT

INTRODUCING M Crammed between the turquoise sea and rugged mountains and blessed with ancient ruins, medieval fortresses and one of the best souks in Arabia, Oman’s capital is full of charm. Muscat means ‘anchorage’ so it comes as no surprise to learn that the sea is one of the main reasons that many people visit Muscat and when it comes to water sports and activities, the capital pulls out all the stops. Dolphin watching (the warm waters of the Arabian Sea are home to playful pods of dolphins), dhow trips, diving (there are plenty of world class diving locations off Muscat’s coastline) and snorkelling are all on offer.

Ready for some culture? When Prince Charles was in Muscat in 2016, His Royal Highness made a beeline for Bait Al Zubair museum and – for a real insight into the capital – you’d be wise to do the same. Here you can learn about Omani heritage and Bedouin traditions through the excellent displays of photographs, costumes and other handicras and household items. While you’re at it, check out the souk and Sultan Qaboos’ waterside palace – the blue and gold mushroom pillars are certainly striking.

MUSCAT Work off all the hummus and halloumi you’ve consumed with a walk along the aractive cornice – it’s especially spectacular at sunset.

MAD ABOUT MUSCAT Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque As any Omani will tell you, this magnificent mosque boasts an eight tonne Swarovski chandelier making it well worth a visit – especially since it’s the only mosque in Oman that is open to non-Muslims. Set against a backdrop of the Hajar Mountains, the Grand Mosque was inaugurated on 4 May 2001 when his Majesty Sultan Taboos commenced prayer on the world’s largest hand woven carpet. The mosque is so large it can accommodate unto 20,000 worshippers at once. sultanqaboosgrandmosque.com

Muscat’s underwater world Everyone raves about the Red Sea – so much so that it’s east to forget that there are plenty of world class diving locations off Oman’s coastline. What’s more, while the Red Sea can be as crowded as the London Underground during rush hour, it’s easier to get that ‘off the beaten track’ feeling in Muscat – making it idea for those who don’t want to share the sea with hordes of tourists.

20 REASONS WHY WE’RE ABOUT THE ISLAMIC CAPITAL OF OMAN

Haggling for gems in Murah Souk This labyrinth like, gossipy market places could keep you contented for days. A real Aladdin’s cave, it’s brimming with jewellery stores selling antique silver earrings and necklaces in intricate Arabesque designs for a snip of the price you’d pay back home – plus vendors peddling frankincense, spices, sandalwood, sequinned slippers, aromatic out and a whole host of Ormani artefacts.

Oman’s architecture Muscat has managed to modernise itself without turning the city into a strip of gargantuan shopping malls like other cities in the Gulf. All buildings have been designed to reflect the cultural heritage of their surroundings. Thus developments are all unmistakably Arabic (on the outside at least) owing to details like white washed walls or sand coloured buildings.

Omani patriotism Flags in red, white and green fluer in the wind on National Day; a mark of genuine national pride.

MAD ABOUT MUSCAT

The Royal Opera House Detractors may say that a pot of yoghurt has more culture than a Gulf country but Oman’s legion of fans beg to differ. And rightly so for the Sultanate does boast a striking Opera House – take a bow the Royal Opera House – that has garnered a reputation in the Gulf as a premier venue for performing arts. Alternatively gawp at the gold, gilded balconies by joining a 30 minute guided tour, during which you can learn a lile more about design. rohmuscat.org.om

Bait Muzna Gallery This delightful art gallery – the first art gallery in Oman – lies opposite the Bayt Al Zubair Museum – and promotes Omani artists to the growing number of tourists who visit the Sultanate. The Gallery also serves as a great retreat from the searing Middle East heat. Temptation abounds and it’s impossible to wander around without returning to your hotel room laden down with local prints and other pieces of Omani cra. baitmuznagallery.com

Sunrise, sunset Catching the sunset do its incredible sinking thing from the Crowne Plaza’s cliff top balcony is arguably Muscat’s greatest free spectacle.

Football fever Watching the locals bend it like Beckham on a Friday aernoon, in an impromptu game of football on the beach over at Shai Al Qurm. The energy, enthusiasm and sheer passion of the Omanis is infectious: this is football at its finest.

The Chedi Checking into this chic hotel – the perfect marriage of aentive Arabic service and modern Asian décor – is easy. The difficulty lies in leaving this elegantly landscaped 21 acre garden oasis with 158 Omani influenced guestrooms and villas set against a backdrop of the majestic Al Hajar Mountains and serene waters of the Gulf of Oman This sublime yet central location equally suits leisure and business travellers, while six distinct restaurants, a 13-suite Balinese spa, three swimming pools, including the 103-metre long pool, 700-squaremetre health club plus two executive meeting rooms enhance Muscat’s considerable cultural aractions.

MAD ABOUT MUSCAT Bait al Baranda Museum Never mind Muscat. This museum near the fish souk end of Murah Corniche wouldn’t be out of place in cities like London, owing to its imaginative, interactive displays that depict everything from geology to ancient life, maritime, folk art and the achievements of Muscat today. It’s a great place to get to grips with Muscat’s past and present – and to escape the scorching, summer heat. baitalbaranda.mm.gov.om

MAD ABOUT MUSCAT

Catching a camel race Omanis are obsessed with the time old Arabian sport of camel racing. Fortunately robot jockeys are now used instead of child jockeys (a practice which garnered international condemnation owing to the harsh conditions and treatments that the jockeys were forced to endure), meaning that visitors can now watch these ships of the desert racing at speeds of up to 60km/h with a clean conscience.

Omanisation Unlike the rest of the region, visitors to the Sultanate will actually come into contact with locals thanks to Sultan Qaboos’ policy of ‘Omanisation’. In contrast to its Khaleeji brothers Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE, Oman cannot afford costly expatriate labour, meaning that Omanis of both sexes are employed in all sectors of society.

Kargeen Café Take a seat in the picturesque garden at Kargeen (an old Omani word for ‘lile wooden coage) and drink a wonderfully refreshing mint juice, while puffing out clouds of sweet tobacco from long hookahs. Bliss. Established by a dynamic, local couple – Mr. Jalil Abdullah Hamza Al Asfoor and Mrs. Hana Haffadh – Kargeen is a Muscat institution. kargeen.com

The Sultanate of Oman is a land of breathtaking natural beauty interwoven with a kaleidoscope of rich history, culture and adventure. The ideal transit hub between Asia, Africa and Europe, Oman has a long and rich history as a seafaring and trading outpost. Muscat, Oman’s capital, was established many centuries ago around a pair of natural harbours, and has kept one eye on trade across the Indian Ocean and the other on the ancient incense routes of the desert interior. The logistics sector remains a major contributor to the country’s diversification. In particular, it is making significant progress in aviation. The country has two international airports, one in the capital Muscat and the other in the southern city of Salalah. Oman Airports, which is owned by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman, is responsible for the management and operation of Muscat International Airport and Salalah International Airport, as well as for the future new airports of Ad Duqm, Sohar and Ras Al Hadd.
