t’s the love issue with wedding gowns and Valentine treats to make you feel romantic. Or, if it’s all too much, turn to Caroline’s page where you will find gory, historical tales of deaths and dignitaries relevant to this month. On pages 13 and 14 Amander and Michelle celebrate local businesses that opened and continued to thrive during 2010. And I am pleased to announce that Local Living Ltd enjoyed a growth last year. Please let this be the end to these testing times. And a reminder that our aim is to support independent businesses and we endeavour to mention as many as we can but understandably some slip through our net ...so if you have a business that needs celebrating do let us know. And do try to shop locally.

Unwind in one of the most fascinating places on earth - Shimla In today’s busy life, holidays need to be for relaxation. Sometimes you do want to see everything, beyond every hill and every corner. You will just simply want to slow down, relax and be pampered, enjoy a massage in the spa, a leisurely walk or simply dine in a gourmet restaurant. But if you don’t just want to lie on a beach for your next well earned break, why not try something a little different? Situated in the northwestern Himalaya, the Indian hill station of Shimla was once the Summer Capital of the British Raj. Its streets of half timbered houses and churches are evocative of a bygone era. Its setting in the snow capped peaks is truly spectacular. At an altitude of 2,500 metres, Oundle Travel’s recommended hotel is The Oberoi Wildflower Hall, a picturesque 45 drive from Shimla, overlooking a magnificent vista of rugged mountains, verdant meadows and cedar forests. Wildflower Hall, once the estate of Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, is set amongst 23 acres of virgin pine and cedar forests and enjoys a fairytale setting in the Greater Himalaya. The magnificent resort has been restored in a superb colonial style; it is renowned for its dramatic views, superb facilities, outstanding service and attention to detail. The Oberoi has a stunning Spa inspired by ancient Indian traditions whilst incorporating international influences. Why not just relax at The Oberoi or arrange horse riding, croquet or archery, mountain biking or visit Chail the former capital of The Maharajah of Patiala, a quiet, cool town, the cricket pitch here is the highest in the world? The old palace and the polo grounds are worth a visit, it is a lovely spot to take a walk with a champagne picnic. A seven night’s holiday to Shimla including international flights with Kingfisher Airlines, Private Transfers in a Deluxe Room with breakfast served daily from £2295.00 per person. Holidays to Wildflower Hall can be tailored to suit, with a number of other destinations including Nepal and Rajasthan, the plains of Northern India or a journey on the luxury Maharjas’ Express Train. • For more details on this Tailor Made trip to India together with some of the most chilled out holidays for 2011 Contact Oundle Travel on Tel: 01832 273600 – www.oundletravel.co.uk

New Energy Clothing website www.energy-clothing.com Energy Clothing in Ironmonger St has a new website that means you can browse their wide stock of men’s and women’s clothing and either purchase online or go into the store to try it on – the best of both worlds really. Sarah Sewell, the owner commented: “This gives us another sales avenue and also forms the basis of getting feedback from customers and building a community online”. The website was developed by Aidan Haylock at 23ccc (www.23ccc.co.uk) and is really simple and appealing to use. It’s just as easy to use as any national site.

Bringing your kitchen choices to life We all rustle through magazines to find the perfect kitchen, but how will it look in our home and will it work the way we want it to? QKS Kitchens in Stamford not only has the widest supply of kitchens in the region and the most extensive fitting and after sales service; it also stands out because it helps you to envisage how your kitchen will look and work in your own home. Recently a ‘Presentation Suite’ has been added in the first floor showroom where you can dream in comfort – a 42” plasma screen, a control panel and the ability to change dimensions, features, product selections at the flick of a button and see exactly how it will look. And in the early spring a new Range Cooker showroom is being added that will focus exclusively on cookers – Rangemaster from Aga, Falcon and Lacanche – bits of kit that will take your breath away and make cooking altogether more pleasurable. QKS has always stayed ahead by innovation, and as it celebrates 30 years in business this year, innovation and customer service will be emphasised as strongly as ever. • QKS The Maltings, Barnack Road, Stamford, PE9 2NA. TITILLATIONS

Historical February Caroline Aston remembers dignitaries from yesteryear who demised during the month of February

W

ell, it’s February fill-dyke again which means we’ll all either be inundated with rain or snowed in at home. The one good thing about the month is that it contains in its middle the glowing beacon of romance that is St. Valentine’s day. You know the one: that special time of year when magically the price of chocolate, knickers and flowers doubles overnight and pubs serve fish and chips by candlelight with the mushy peas arranged in a heart shape! What an old cynic I am becoming, eh? However, this year I thought I would satisfy the historian in me by running my eye over what has happened in February over the centuries. One of my favourite places for a mooch is over the Rutland/Northamptonshire border at Fotheringhay. Apart from boasting a rather lush eatery in the form of ‘The Falcon’, it is steeped in history for it was at the long extinct Fotheringhay Castle that tragic, beautiful Mary, Queen of Scots was beheaded. Imprisoned for almost 18 years, her final days were lived here. She only learnt of her fate the day before her execution and spent her final night praying in the castle’s chapel. On 8th February 1587 she

10

stepped up onto a scaffold erected in the Great Hall and over 400 people saw the executioner sever her head with three mighty blows. Beneath her headdress her hair had turned completely white and her little lapdog quivered beneath the skirts of his dead mistress. As you wander round the site of the old castle, history seems just a breath away – and the views over the Nene Valley are stunning too. Just under two hundred years later Britain’s 18th century version of Alan Tichmarsh was breathing his last. Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, one of the truly great garden designers, died on 6th February 1783 on the doorstep of his daughter Bridget’s house in Hertford Street, London. He was responsible for creating over 170 lushly English landscapes around great houses, including our own Belvoir Castle and nearby Grimsthorpe Castle. He got his nickname from his habit of surveying an estate and announcing to its owner that it had ‘capabilities’. He always refused to work in Ireland on the grounds that he hadn’t finished England yet! A fine portrait of him hangs in Burghley House, ironically by Irish artist Nathaniel Dance.

On 1st February 1901 the tiny coffin containing the body of Queen Victoria arrived in Portsmouth aboard the royal yacht ‘Alberta’, en route to her magnificent state funeral in London the next day. This longest reigning British monarch first visited Rutland in her teens, accompanied by her German mother the Duchess of Kent. The two horseshoes given by these royal ladies still hang proudly side by side in Oakham Castle. And our little county has long occupied a warm place in royal hearts. The Lord Lieutenant between 1906 and 1921 was Lord Ranksborough, the man who built Langham’s Ranksborough Hall and who was Equerry to both Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra. As Princess of Wales Alexandra once enjoyed the most glittering weekend houseparty held at the now vanished Normanton Hall which featured in a three page spread in ‘The Illustrated London News’. So there we are, readers. A bit of history to distract you from all those hearts and flowers and I hope you now know enough obscure factoids to bore for Britain over your romantic suppers for two this February! Enjoy….

New Businesses in Rutland These may be testing times but the entrepreneurial spirit thrives in Rutland with plenty of independent new businesses throwing open their doors. Amander Meade finds out how some of the newcomers have fared in the last year

ndy and Joanne Hirst fill their shop Hirst & Hirst on Church Street with fantastic contemporary products from British, European and local designers. All the stock is unusual, beautiful or both. Andy says that design flair is at the grass roots of everything they stock and ‘rethinking the traditional is their motto’. Hot for spring are prints by Coulson Macleod. Six months ago Itch Gallery launched in Knights Yard and owner Catherine Walls says the response has been ‘truly fantastic’. “With more and more people favouring individual and handmade objects over the mass-produced, contemporary craft is a booming industry. We have so many comments from people who are overjoyed to see something so different and aesthetically stimulating, and right on their doorstep.” Chris Payne opened Linnet in Oakham, specialising in high quality ladies’ clothing brands, and has been delighted with the response so far. “I have noticed that if ladies shop with us once, they tend to return.” As exclusive regional stockiest of the popular Betty Barclay label, Chris also supports a number of British manufacturers - look out for details of a fashion show in store later this spring. Camilla at Scarlet Sky on Mill Street spends months working with suppliers to find the right brands of children’s clothing for her customers. “As well as great design, I consider quality and value as well as environmental and social

responsibility. Whether you are looking for clothes for your own children or the perfect gift, we are confident you will find what you are looking for.” Ranges include Tommy Hilfiger, Jean Bourdet, Hackett and Pampolina. The Sketchbook is a lovely friendly shop stocking everything the budding or experienced artist could need, including specialist paper, modelling equipment, oils and acrylic paints. Vanilla is a relaxed and spacious place to buy beautiful ladies clothing and accessories and is now under new management. The service and advice is exceptional and if you are looking for a special outfit or some key pieces for spring, a visit to Vanilla is essential. Representing Uppingham… The Olive Kitchen, just off the High Street, is a must for deli and Mediterranean foods, crepes and waffles plus outside catering for weddings, parties and events. “Our Paella Parties are not only delicious, but provide something a little different”, says owner, Tony Savage. The Therapy Room provides all kinds of massage and relaxation therapies with expert staff tailoring treatment to the individual. Particularly soothing and effective is the reflexology treatment, which can have far reaching benefits. Local girl Emily Culpin has brought children’s clothes and gifts to Uppingham High Street with Little Pitch which also stocks adults’ fashion. Children’s ranges include Kids Joules and No Added Sugar plus

Emu Australia and Motel for the grown ups. Also new this year to High Street East, Caab Living is dedicated to bringing the best home, kitchen and lifestyle designs to Uppingham. “We aim to source a variety of luxurious, cutting edge furniture and accessory products from all over the world combined with true British brands, both well-known and upcoming.” Expect to find Alessi, Jamie Oliver, Nigella Lawson, Guzzini and Sagaform among many other brands. Five of the best red lipsticks If there’s one day of the year you can be really brave with your choice of lip colour, this is it. Wearing red lipstick is often a matter of getting used to seeing yourself with lips that stand out, but keep practising and you will soon feel more comfortable. The

key is to pick a ‘true red’ which is flattering to all skin types and avoid anything with orange or pinky undertones; these shades are much harder to carry off. My favourite five reds on the market offer something for all budgets:

1. Rimmel Colour Show Off lipstick, Shade 230, Red Fever, £6.29. A great budget buy in a velvety matte finish and my choice of red for a glam night out. 2. L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Serum in Shade 502, True Red, £8.69. A lipstick infused with a boosting serum containing Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid, to hydrate and plump. 3. Boots No7 Moisture Drench Lipstick in Shade 110, Dare Devil, £10.00. An intense deep red for a sophisticated look with SPF 15. 4. Clarins Rouge Prodige in Shade 120, Fusion Red, £16.34. An exceptionally long-lasting lip colour in a handy mirrored case, perfect for topping up your lippie when out and about. 5. Clarins Joli Rouge in Shade 729, Red Terra, £15.83. A must for showing off in your make-up bag! A moisturising lipstick offering creamy colour and silky smooth shine. Rimmel, L’Oreal and No7 lipsticks available from Boots, 18 High Street, Oakham, Tel: 01572 722024 Clarins lipsticks available from Day Lewis Pharmacy, 21 High Street, Oakham, Tel: 01572 722083

WEDDING VENUES

Pipewell Hall A day you’ll always remember. A setting you’ll never forget “There are many venues to choose from in our area but one I had not heard about till recently was Pipewell Hall.” Abigail Richardson interviews Liza Smith about her special day

L

iza and Mark looked at many venues across Northamptonshire and even at a chateau in the south of France, but they fell in love with Pipewell Hall. Says Liza, “In on order to achieve exactly what we wanted, there was always something missing with all of the other venues we looked at, and as soon as we saw Pipewell, with the snow drops nestling in between the trees, the beautiful building and the sense of space, we knew it was perfect for us.” Liza and Mark wanted to create an American outdoor-style wedding but were told by the authorities that we were unable to be married outside so they had to do the formal legal vows the day before at Northampton registrar office with three close friends. There was no such red tape at Pipewell: “When Trudie and Shaun welcomed us in to their beautiful home, we were simply blown away, not only by the surroundings but by how warm and welcoming they were; everything we wanted to do wasn’t a problem from amount of marquees we needed, parking, accommodation to even sourcing the best fireworks, and Shaun, being a butcher, provided the biggest and best Hog roast ever! We had originally booked another venue, cars and hotel prior to seeing Pipewell Hall and had to cancel, losing all our deposits but we have no regrets! All of the managers at Pipewell were so helpful. We knew exactly what we wanted and they were keen to give us everything we asked for. They contacted us regularly with additional ideas and seemed just as excited as we were, which we thought gave a special touch as I knew how much they wanted to make our day perfect with no job being too big or too small. In fact the kindness they showed made the experience quite overwhelming. The catering was outstanding; it was truly yummy and all the guests complimented the food… The wedding cake was made by Trudie, who specializes in cup cakes and people still talk about those cakes! On the day I particularly enjoyed getting ready in the Blue Room watching all my guests and the groom arrive from the window. Then I made my grand entrance down the stairs and into the beautiful gardens.”

Pipewell Hall Hire of Grounds/Marquee £5,400 + VAT • Including tables, chairs, linen, crockery, glassware, dance floor, bar, toilets, linings, lighting, carpets, etc. • Also a complimentary night’s stay for the Bride and Groom in the Bridal Gate Lodge, inclusive full English breakfast, flowers, champagne and luxury toiletries. • Hire of Grand Hall and Drawing Room for up to an hour and a half for a drinks reception/ photos/civil ceremony (note: no licence at present, but are currently in the process of applying for one). £350 + VAT • Accommodation. There are 5 bedrooms available which can sleep up to 9 guests in the main house plus 2 guest cottages that can sleep up to 10/12 guests.

It helps that Liza clearly knew exactly what she was looking for and that she is very experienced with weddings and has a creative touch herself as she is a freelance make up artist with over 10 years experience, specialising in brides, so praise in deed that she feels this venue and the staff are second to none!

Cancer Macmillan Nearly New Sale Friday 4 and Saturday 5 March One of the most eagerly awaited events on the fundraising calendar is the Nearly New Clothing Sale organised by the Rutland branch of Cancer Macmillan Support. Last year the sale raised almost £40,000 and clothes are now being sought for this year’s event which will be held at the Barnsdale Lodge Hotel. “We are hoping that ladies who might otherwise head to London to shop for a special outfit might try us this year,” commented Elizabeth Mills of the organising team. “If you are visiting Cheltenham next month for example, you might find just the hat you need at the Nearly New Sale for a fraction of the cost. Our stock is all donated over the months prior to the sale and comes not just from Rutland but from contacts all over the country.

We have ladies’ and gentlemen’s clothing as well as a children’s section plus accessories, hats, belts and shoes. There are always exceptional bargains to be found – examples include a pair of brand new Gucci boots which sold for £100, Laboutin shoes at £85, brand new silk lingerie from £10 as well as skirts, shirts and shoes from quality high street stores from only £5.” Any good quality, clean ladies’ or gentleman’s clothing, shoes or accessories can be donated for resale. The team respectfully asks that only genuinely new items or those worn once or twice are offered for sale. To arrange collection or delivery please contact Trish Ruddle. • Tel: 01572 724400. PROFILE

Any Dream Will Do Abigail Richardson and 5 ‘A’ Level Theatre Studies Students from the Rutland County College interview Lee Mead about his career thus far and his upcoming Uk tour

L

Q from Ben: What advice do you have for people wanting to get into this industry? “Don’t take the auditions too seriously as there will be thousands of people (auditioning) but you must be prepared and be passionate about the piece. It’s not enough simply to learn your lines or your song. Make sure it connects with you and take (your performance) beyond the words. But have fun. Be organised and not too intense.”

ee Mead is best known for winning the title role in the West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat through the BBC reality TV casting show Any Dream Will Do. He recently joined the London cast of Wicked and is also pursuing a music career with his first series of solo concerts in the UK including an appearance at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall on February 25th

Far far away (Well not that far away; Lee is still only 28, yet already husband to Denise Van Outen and father to eight month old Betsy, whose name was frequently mentioned during the conversation.) As a child Lee originally wanted to be a footballer, “But I was rubbish”, he laughs. Yet he pursued this dream until he discovered the stage. “I came quite late to the stage, appearing in my first amateur production at the age of 16.” Then there was no turning back. Q from Alex. What music were you into when you were 18? “Oh that’s a tough one”, exclaims Lee before he lists numerous influences including Joni Mitchell, Bob Dillon, Adel, Neil Young and Munford and Sons. Lee admits to having a very eclectic taste in popular music as well as a love of classical music which, he feels, helps when it comes to auditions. “I like to expand my horizons and listen to all genres, keeping an open mind. Overall it helps your work and if a job comes up you’re not type cast.”

I closed my eyes, drew back the curtain After school Lee went on the study at a local performing arts college where he gained his first professional stage experience which launched him into the world of cruise ship entertainment. In 2004 he moved into musical theatre playing both Levi and the Pharaoh in the UK touring production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Following Joseph, Lee performed in the UK tours of Tommy and Miss Saigon before joining the West End production of Phantom of the Opera as an ensemble player and understudy for the role of Raoul.

A crash of drums, a flash of light While performing in Phantom, Lee was amongst 10,000 wannabe Josephs who auditioned for the BBC show, “I applied thinking I had no chance of winning”. But he did and went on to perform Joseph 600 times before handing over the role to runner up Keith Jack, in 2009. “I was

36

May I return to the beginning…

very proud to be leading a cast of 40; it really was the biggest show out there.”

My golden coat flew out of sight “I have always been a fan of musicals but after leaving Joseph, I decided I wanted to act. I have always had a real passion for acting and would love to work in film and television.” So, Lee took a short course in film studies in New York at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. Q Alex: Who is your favourite actor? L: “Johnny Depp; he’s very cool.” On his return to the UK, he took the lead role in “Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime”, a play adapted by Trevor Baxter from a short story by Oscar Wilde, in the style of a tongue-in-cheek Victorian melodrama which opened at the Theatre Royal Windsor in January 2010 and finished at the Theatre Royal Bath on 24 April 2010. Q from Alastair: Have you ever forgotten a line, a prop or a dance step? “Oh many times,” laughs Lee. “Usually the audience doesn’t know but it happens quite a lot, particularly when you’re doing eight shows a week! You have to be quick on your feet and improvise. It can be quite funny for the other cast members.”

Since 10 May 2010 Lee has appeared in the role of Prince Fiyero in the London production of Wicked. As well as this, Lee is currently undertaking his first series of solo concerts throughout the UK. “It’s been a full on year”. Lee’s concert includes songs from the musicals, from his two solo albums and he also co-performs with Niahm Perry, a finalist from the BBC’s I’d do Anything, searching for Nancy show. “I met her backstage and thought she had a lovely voice”. Q: What can we expect to hear in February? “The show includes a mix of varied sounds and genres which give me a chance to talk about my life…”. Lee also enthused about his 5 piece band who have recently played independently at the V festival, with Corinne Bailey Ray and with Nadine (from Girls Aloud).

Any (other) dream will do Q from Mark: would you ever appear in Glee? L: “I’d love to be asked to appear in Glee. It’s a great show. I have the CDs, which I play to my daughter, as well as Baby Mozart, and my CDs! I am always singing to her. I am very lucky that my work typically doesn’t start till 6.30pm, so I get time to be a dad.” Q: Sinead: What other musicals would you recommend? L: “Phantom. It’s a great piece of theatre with beautiful music… and a new show, Betty Blue Eyes”. (At the Novello theatre, London). Q Sinead: Where do you see yourself next? L: “I will always do musicals but I would love to do more acting” …And we would all love to see him as we were very smitten by the genuinely nice and incredibly talkative Lee Mead. I can’t wait to see him live in concert in February. • To book tickets to see Lee live at the De Montfort Hall on February 25th logon to www.demontforthall.co.uk or call Tel: 0116 2333111
