Keeping Up with The Joneses:

Living “the Good Life” in Fredericksburg, Texas

In 1851, Carl Hilmar Guenther, 24, an immigrant from Germany, built a flour mill near Fredericksburg, Texas. In 1855, Guenther married Dorothea Pape and replaced his log cabin with a larger home built of rock. In 1859, Guenther moved his mill business to San Antonio and began to build new flour mills along the San Antonio River. The business grew rapidly, and in 1875, “Guenther’s Best” became the brand name for this top grade of flour.

For as long as I have owned The Best of Fredericksburg, I have become increasingly aware that so many people have decided to move to Fredericksburg because they once took the time to visit our lovely town on a whim. And who could blame them? The truth of the matter is it only takes a moment to fall in love with Fredericksburg. In the time it takes to enjoy lunch, stroll through the quaint shops, or drive around the lovely historic neighborhoods, one can easily fall – utterly and madly – in love. And people do. That first visit is all it takes to dream a new dream and to decide to start anew here. In the case of the Jones family, that is exactly what happened. They accidentally fell in love. Randy and Carroll Jones had no plans to even visit Fredericksburg in 2015. They had just attended a conference in Austin and, at the last minute, decided to head to Fredericksburg for dinner. Once seated on the outdoor patio at Burger Burger, a local favorite, they were serenaded by Mike Blakely, a very talented, local Hill Country singer/songwriter. It must have been the perfect combination of the gentle evening air, delicious food, the sweet sound of country music, and the beautiful Texas sky with its “stars at night all big and bright” that did it. For in those few moments – of that spur-of-the-moment visit – their hearts were stolen, and a conversation began between Randy and Carroll that would change their lives forever. It wasn’t long before Randy and Carroll and their entire family packed up their lives in Midland, Texas, and headed to “the Burg”. Their hearts and minds were full of new dreams, and they set about to make their first dream a reality: they wanted to create the most stunning wedding venue in the Hill Country, where couples could begin their new lives together in one of the most beautiful spots in all of Texas. Truly, love was in the air.

As is often the case with dreams, an opportunity soon presented itself. La Bonne Vie Ranch had become available, and the couple realized that hard work and great timing would mean their dream would become reality. Luckily, this West Texas family knew the value of hard work. The entire family had worked tirelessly in Midland to build a successful family business there, and that experience prepared them well for their next big adventure, La Bonne Vie Ranch. And so, four years of hard work and plenty of renovation finally paid off when one of the most stunning venues in Fredericksburg came to fruition. La Bonne Vie (French for “the good life”) officially opened its doors in October 2019. The gorgeous property, complete with a fairy tale-like open air chapel, stained glass windows, and a beautiful chapel bell, is tucked among the trees of the stunning Hill Country. As is the tradition at La Bonne Vie, couples ring the chapel bell together after saying their vows, to announce their union. Once the ceremony has ended, it’s a short walk to the reception barn, complete with a beautiful bride’s room and an open area perfect for dancing the night away. For those traveling to the area and celebrating late into the night, luxurious and comfortable on-site accommodations are available. La Bonne Vie is truly a breathtaking wedding venue, but the sprawling yet intimate property is also the perfect spot for family reunions, corporate retreats, or an incredible girls’ weekend. As if the Joneses hadn’t accomplished enough already, their first dream led to another, and yet another. In 2018, they purchased not one, but two local wineries: Torre Di Pietra and 1851 Vineyards. The family is now working to bring two unforgettable wineries to Fredericksburg – wineries that will steal your heart with gorgeous views of sun-drenched vineyards and, of course, the delicious wines! When we tell our stories, we give something very important to those who follow after us. We give them the gift of our collective experiences, wisdom, the strength of our hearts and minds, the measure of experiences from our personal timeline; from that, ultimately, we gift the next generations with a compass to follow so they may begin to make their way forward and begin writing their own histories like those found here in charming Fredericksburg, Texas.

Humble Beginnings It only takes one visit to this incredible town we call “home” to understand that its charm and culture are second-tonone in the great state of Texas. The vibrant community we see today is a product of rich history and intentional preservation. Founded in 1846, Fredericksburg was named after Prince Frederick of Prussia by Baron Otfried Hans von Meusebach. While Meusebach’s interest in coming to Texas had more to do with his love of the land, most Germans emigrated from Germany to flee political, social, and economic conditions. Similar to the history of many immigrants, the Germans arrived in Texas determined and ready to make a better life for themselves. This inspired an unparalleled work ethic and willingness to go to great lengths for freedom, prosperity, and community. After arriving at New Braunfels in 1845, Meusebach set out to select a second settlement of land and decided on what is now known as Fredericksburg. He purchased 10,000 acres on credit and allotted each settler one town lot and 10 acres of farmland. The German immigrants established farmsteads near their crops and animals on the

German immigrants sat on their porches and socialized with neighbors on Sunday afternoons before heading back to their farms; hence, the name “Sunday House”. To this day, Sunday House homes and the beautiful stone and rock farmhouses in Fredericksburg have been preserved. This preservation of both history and culture is just one of the many reasons that Fredericksburg properties are highly valued and coveted. Fredericksburg’s humble beginnings are filled with integrity, culture, a yearning for a better quality of life, and a great appreciation of the land. These values remain true to Fredericksburg today. Our thriving community is filled with amazing men and women who, for generations, have loved, appreciated, and poured their hearts into this great town. And now, many families are moving into Fredericksburg for a better quality of life. As the state of Texas becomes one of the most desirable states to live in, we will continue to see property values increase. This is especially true in places like Fredericksburg, as it is becoming one of the most desirable places to live in Texas. Tourism is growing rapidly in Fredericksburg, as more people from around the world are visiting a town that is known for its beauty, history, charm, and stunning wineries. Whether it be land, a vacation home, an investment property, or a future forever home, there is no doubt our community will continue to grow and the value of property in our area will increase. It is quite remarkable to think Meusebach’s love of Texas and his great legacy of German culture has continued to burn bright here more than a century and a half later. I am grateful to live in a town where the community works so hard to preserve our uniqueness and honor our heritage. I pray we will always be mindful of our humble beginnings of Herr Meusebach!

WINE GOLF FOOD

Located in the heart of the Texas wine country, you will find Lady Bird Golf Course. Playing at just over 6,600 yards, this redesigned gem will both challenge and delight golfers of all levels with its meandering layout and expertly maintained putting greens. Originally opened in 1969 as a nine-hole course and then redesigned in 2012, Lady Bird returns one to the easier times, when golf was made to walk and enjoy your time with nature. While the front nine features significant elevation changes, as well as multiple water features, the back nine stuns with its panoramic vistas of the surrounding Hill Country. Strolling along the fairways of Lady Bird, the only “slow groups” you will encounter will be the roaming herds of white-tail deer or the gaggle of geese that reside on the property. The golf experience at Lady Bird begins with a 30 stall, all-natural grass driving range. In addition to well-marked target greens and alignment poles, the practice facility has two separate putting greens and a short game area complete with practice bunker. The range was recently automated, allowing golfers’ access to after-hour practice. The driving range at Lady Bird plays host to a both our PGA Junior League Program and a very active US Kids Golf instruction program. Private and group instruction, as well as professional club fitting, are readily available at Lady Bird, conducted by our PGA professionals. The practice facility at Lady Bird is perfectly designed for you to take your first step towards a lifetime of golf, fine tune your skills or find some new friends to enjoy the game with. Upon completing your round or before you head out to the links, there is no better stop than our own Red Bird Grill. Serving breakfast and lunch, the grill pairs an atmosphere of relaxation with what many refer to as the “best burger in town”! Although our version of the smash burger, comprised of a blend of three cuts of beef grilled to perfection is difficult to pass up, we also offer fresh salads and local specialties. The newest amenity to our grill is the full-service bar that serves up craft cocktails and the perfect Bloody Mary to either begin or end your day. With indoor and outdoor covered patio seating available, the Red Bird is a must experience part of your visit to Lady Bird!
