I decided to grow my own organic vegetables after a breast cancer diagnosis because I put myself on a fresh organic alkalinizing diet and I either couldn't get the organic produce I needed or it was so expensive I just couldn't afford it. I thought gardening organically would be easy and fun. Not being a natural gardener, I read all the instructions, dug over and fertilized the soil with non-chemical fertilizers, planted my rows of plants and kept up the pest control with natural home-made remedies. As much as I wanted my own home grown vegetables, I discovered there was a heck of a lot of work to do on a regular basis and as I had no passion for gardening my enthusiasm soon wore out. I didn't tend it very often and let things go. I let the plants go to seed and just threw in more seeds wherever they landed, planted cuttings from friends wherever they fit and soon I had a big messy patch of all sorts. When I thought I would have to pull it all out and start again, what I discovered was fantastic. My neglected garden was abundant and full of food! Everything grew together, seeds popped up underneath and in between other plants and there were virtually no pests at all. All it needed was a bit of a tidy up. The other bonus was that there were so many plants, weeds didn't have room to grow. I had been throwing all my kitchen scraps into a compost bin and let it do its own thing. I would then feed my garden with the compost. My garden is only 6 metres by 3 metres and in the last 6 to 8 months has produced pumpkins, capsicums, tomatoes, cucumbers, rocket, garlic, lettuces, eggplants, chillies and lots of herbs. At the moment I have carrots, beetroot, peas, more lettuces, spinach and even though it is winter, more tomatoes. It just goes to show how wonderful Nature really is. It just does its own thing and if we leave Nature to it, more often it does a better job than us. My laziness in the garden turned out to be the best thing, because now, I don't dig it or weed it and I don't buy fertilizer, compost or pest control products. There is more food than we can eat ourselves so we can share with friends and family and the garden just carries on and grows itself. Not everything in life turns out this easy but I sure am glad my garden did!
The garden came very soon after my breast cancer diagnosis and the fact that I was being proactive and doing something positive towards my healing was very therapeutic. Guide to Efficient Vegetable Gardening [http://radiant-energy.net] Visit Here For More Information
