Stock market trading Trading on the stock market can be a very risky business, but it can also be hugely rewarding! However there are many ways that you can make money by trading on the stock exchanges of the world, because the stock market is of course global in nature. This means that the opportunity to never sleep, but to trade 24/7 is available to anyone who desires to do so. Long term trading: Investing for the long term in stocks and shares is the only type of trading that 'gurus' such as Warren Buffet regard as legitimate investing rather that high risk gambling. What does long term mean? basically any plan that is allowing for an investment of under 5 years, he would regard as short term trading and there-fore just a gamble. There are many however who would disagree with this judgement - including myself - however it is hard to disagree with any conviction, against a man who has made the billions of dollars that he has in his long career, so he must be getting something right! Short Term Trading: This would indicate a trading position that lasted anything from minutes to months or even years. Basically however a short term trader would buy and sell within the same working day in order to save on interest and other fees outstanding. The idea is to have no 'open' positions at the end of the trading day. This is a bit of a generalization, but nevertheless ok for all that. Short term trading is especially geared for trading cfd's or Traded options, both of which would be regarded as high risk by market traders. However they are used as a kind of 'wild card' by many trading houses, who will typically include a small percentage of these trading vehicles in their portfolios. Why would they do this? The simple answer is Leverage. For a very small % down payment, (usually around 3%) you will you can make a huge amount of trades and therefore take advantage ( or suffer the loss) of the swing in either direction. This allows for massive leverage and hence the possibilities of huge gains. Going Long or Short: Many people are under the impression that when the stock markets fall, then everyone is losing money. They then think that stock market investing is a very risky business in a recession of the type we are facing now. This perception could hardly be further from the truth! I myself have made far more money from a falling market that I have from a rising market, how? simple really, I take out what is known as a 'short' position. In other words I am speculating on the stocks that I have
purchased going down in price - I can them buy them back at the lower price and trouser the difference - i.e. profit. To go 'long' simply means to take out a position where you expect the market to rise, and then make your profits the 'normal' way. World Stock Markets: When trading on the 'Global market' then there is a huge selection to choose from, however just about everyone trades on the New Your Stock Exchange (NYSE), the London Stock exchange, the Nikki Dow in Japan, the Hang Seng, the Frankfurt exchange or the Australian Stock Exchange - this is to name just a few! The stock markets of the world have -generally speaking - benefited from the crash in house prices, especially in the USA and through-out Europe. Investors have to put their money somewhere, and with the decline in property prices, it seems that stock market trading has taken on a new sheen.
